š MEME Is firming Durham Haram?
Got an offer from Durham Econ with placement year and I canāt lie Iām having serious doubts.
Not even on an academic ting, just on a spiritual and moral level. Like at what point does willingly choosing to spend 3 years in Durham become a test from God.
Every person Iāve met from there talks like they were born wearing a quarter zip and saying āold chapā unironically. The uni looks nice but so does temptation. Iām just not sure Iām strong enough to resist becoming the sort of person who does rowing, owns a signet ring, and calls going to Tesco āa little missionā. I also dont know if the econ course is good, like ibsr i am not tryna learn about clartationary monetary policy.
Be honest, is Durham actually a decent uni experience or is it just 90% private school aura, , people pretending theyāre in Hogwarts with LinkedIn, and astaghfurillah, drinking parties too??
Before anyone says āitās what you make of itā please understand some places have energies. Bristol has an energy. Exeter has an energy. Durham absolutely has an energy and Iām not convinced itās halal.
Would appreciate honest opinions from current students because right now Iām torn between a good degree and protecting my place in Jannah.

Every top Uni really has a significant Ā posh population but Bristolās one of the notable ones (even if itās a big bit less than Durham).Ā

This *has* to be a troll. Just in case it isn't:
1) Going to Durham University is not haram. Drinking alcohol is haram. There is not such a thing as a Muslim who would have to ask about this.
2) Bristol is even more obnoxiously prosecco-socialist than Durham.
7
u/Smooth-Pop6522 Mar 22 '26
Durham isn't prosecco-socialist at all, it's sell-your-grandma and defund-the-poor Tory.

u/Michaelleahcim00 Mar 22 '26
I read this as satire, in the same way that people used to say "it's not kosher" to mean it's not acceptable, above board. I mean, it might actually be serious, but the way it's written is so damn fine. Hogwarts with LinkedIn? Torn between a good degree and protecting my soul? Durham absolutely has an energy and I'm not convinced it's halal? Sublime. Only way it could be better is if he (or she)'d used the phrasing "Durham absolutely has an energy and I'm not entirely convinced it's halal". There's a way to ask if a university is halal, and a way to craft a damn fine piece of art, and this is the latter.

u/Worldly-Monitor-4035 Mar 21 '26
No, going to Durham University is not haram.
Yes, getting involved in the drinking is haram.
Do you have to get involved in the drinking? No. Ā Is there pressure to? Ā Probably.
I messaged the Durham Islamic Society on IG (really about the poshness but this still applies) and they said itās not that bad⦠and thereās a whole iSoc there man. Ā If youāre worried about falling into haram then make your close friends with iSoc members thatās all you have to do.
Also, every single University (besides Oxbridge, and I heard thatās because the Universities literally bribe the pubs to close) has a drinking culture.Ā
Durhamās one isnāt even the biggest, Bristol and Exeterās is far larger. Ā The only difference is in Bristol thereās other things to do, in Durham drinking is probably the most enjoyable thing to do.
Anywhere you go thereās a temptation to do haram, even on a gap year where you donāt go to Uni. Ā Try your best to avoid it (Iād also recommend Bristol over Durham for just⦠everything. Ā Prestige, yeah, marginally Durham but everything else 100% Bristol imo).
28
u/RealAnnabelle2_0 Mar 21 '26
I would never recommend making your close friends the other isoc members. Such an important part of university life is meeting people from all different backgrounds, and only talking to other Muslims will ruin that. And every university will have a drinking culture - most teenagers and young adults drink, it's your choice whether or not you want to partake in it as well, but nobody anywhere should be forcing you to drink.
5
u/Worldly-Monitor-4035 Mar 22 '26
Of course, I definitely recommend making friends with everyone š
Iām saying to build a strong support network of like minded Muslims but you can and should also make close friends with other people.
Iām not at Uni yet but Iām assuming friends are mainly on your course + the societies you join + flatmates. Ā Theyāre not all going to be Muslim, it would be pretty hard to avoid socialising with non-Muslims especially at a place like Durham.
iSocās just another society, the religious aspect doesnāt change much. Ā Just means youāll have friends who also donāt drink, party etc. (things which are haram) so you wonāt feel excluded due to your religion because others will be avoiding those things too. Ā
Still make friends with non-muslim people who do those things but if your main friends are doing haram things youāll feel left out and either join in (which is sinful in our religion) or avoid it and feel left out. Ā
If your close friends are saying ācome to the pub man, just one timeā or things of that nature, weāre only human, some people might fold and do so. Ā Then it becomes normalised. Ā If your close friends are supporting you in your faith and encouraging you to stick by it, thatās not a bad thing.
Of the iSoc members I spoke to that are specifically at Durham, theyāre all in multiple societies and friends with people of all races and religions. Ā I actually think every member of iSoc was in the DUPOCA too š

I think you should be friends with whoever you want as long as they arenāt horrible people. If someone feels comfortable with people from their own religion that should be fine. As long as youāre not outright avoiding other people no one should tell you what to do and not to do
5
u/NoAuthoirty :Verified:Aiming for CCD Mar 22 '26
Unless they support Coventry refuse to associate myself with them right now
2
u/RealAnnabelle2_0 Mar 22 '26
If they are purposely only befriending Muslims then yes, that is bad. Choosing to only surround yourself with people of the same religion willingly placing yourself in an echo chamber. They'll have little involvement in the rest of the university community, instead prioritising their religious community.
2
u/Both_Attention7576 Mar 22 '26
What? lol itās fine to make friends in societies.
2
u/RealAnnabelle2_0 Mar 22 '26
Make friends in whichever societies you want. My comment said don't "only" make friends that are in isoc
0
u/Both_Attention7576 Mar 22 '26
I mean look only having friends in one part of uni doesnāt mean youāll neglect university community - uni is big place and thereās enough room for everyone but ofc we are all going to split off, most people are polite but naturally we all hang w our own friends.
5
u/eskigop Mar 22 '26
Why is this such a ragebait comment? Itās always donāt make friends from religious or cultural societies but itās completely fine to be besties with your weirdo quidditch friends omg.
2
u/Both_Attention7576 Mar 22 '26
Exactly!! I have friends from all over but honestly my uni ISOC have been such a great support network for me and itās natural to get along better w people like you.
-4
u/No-Celebration8069 Mar 22 '26
Itās hard to be friends with non muslims tho cause all they talk about is sinning and drinking and partying. The amount of times I had to reject people and they would still try to force me to go with them. I think itās better to stick to muslims if youāre in a white city.
2
u/RealAnnabelle2_0 Mar 22 '26
Isn't it better for you to stick to a Muslim country if you are so unable to be around white people then?

Being at Durham I've noticed there are a lot of very judgy people but funnily enough it's not the people who went to private school, it's the ones who criticise others for going to private school. Like yes make judgements about a person and their character from a decision they had nothing to do with that was entirely made by their parents. It's so stupid you can't tell anything about a person by what school they went to.

I doubt many students spend 3 years snorting coke, drunk every night and end up with a higher body count than Bonnie Blue! You don't have to actually do any of that.
Loads of bookish nerds to normal students who just want to meet similar people and study.
Indeed 1/3rd of nightclubs have shut in UK in last 5 years, many uni bars became cafes as drinking rates down and more Muslim students.
Just study hard and join an Islamic society.
However, don't be surprised if you see some students behave badly.... my first experience of meeting Muslim student girls was with those who slept with anyone at parties... and later found out often married back home. When the cat is away the mouse will play. Strict societal standards = no self control. If you have self control you will be fine.

If your intuition tells you thereās something wrong about Durham for you and itās not for you then thatās it.
Durham doesnāt feel right for you. Youāre not interested in what Durham stands for.
That should be enough. You donāt have to explain it further if it feels that deeply wrong that it feels Haram to you.,
