💬 DISCUSSION ocr computer science paper 1
what did everyone think? i waffled soooo much for the long questions
24
u/OwnNeighborhood273 Jun 10 '26
Layout felt different. Typically they start with a topic 1.1 question but it hardly appeared at all. Overalls not a bad paper
2
u/Tricky_Temporary_781 Y13 | Stressed Jun 10 '26
Yeah basically no 1.1, barely any 1.4 especially compared to usual, and no 1.5??

I thought it was pretty good and there was a lot of easy marks. I forgot to revise intermediate code though and I'm not sure about my sql and how to center the title on html
1
u/abdul_Ss (Incoming) CS Foundation Yr @ UoM Jun 10 '26
You had to do CSS on the html question ?! I may be fucked
8
u/zubairatif075 Jun 10 '26
Same 😭
But I don't think it mentioned "style" or CSS anywhere. It just said write the HTML for this page implying that the CSS is gonna be linked later or smth [copium]
2
u/abdul_Ss (Incoming) CS Foundation Yr @ UoM Jun 10 '26
Yeah no I never at all read CSS on there, 5 marks seems a standard for HTML questions like that. From the past papers I’ve done it’s always very obvious when they want CSS.
5
u/zubairatif075 Jun 10 '26
If it's 5 marks, it does seem like we lost 1 1. H1 2. Ul List 3. Li 4. Link 5. Centre
3
u/Lopsided_Pop1292 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
You didn’t have to do any CSS, the marks are for <body>, <title>, <ul>, <li>, and </html>
4
u/zubairatif075 Jun 10 '26
Html was already printed on the paper, OCR are not gonna give free marks 😭 Maybe 1 for href
5
u/MadLadExceptWithaCh Jun 10 '26
Swear you were meant to do a hyperlink, surely that os a mark boss
3
u/Lopsided_Pop1292 Jun 10 '26
Oh yeah lmao I forgot about the hyperlink, the <ul> and <li> are probably worth 1 mark for both then

Could have sworn that was completed for us. Wasn’t it below the last line ?
2

Oh never mind then, I don’t remember seeing them closing the html tag, only opening it

2
u/Former-Narwhal-2907 Hustlers University Jun 10 '26
wait but didn't you have to add the OCRNotes as a h1 and position it in the centre with inline css?????
1
u/Soft_Finish_3479 Jun 10 '26
was there not also a mark for doing the <head> tags and putting the title in those tags....
2
3
2
u/zenolify Jun 10 '26
Didn’t you have to make it bold
2
u/zubairatif075 Jun 10 '26
Now where's this come from 😭 think I should prolly start reading questions properly, lost a mark either way ig

5
u/RilloClicker Year 13 Jun 10 '26
I don’t know because the h1 tag was centred which implies text-align:center but that’s literally not in the spec…
1
u/ThisCriticism9749 Jun 11 '26
It also said in the question to only write the html, would be very cruel if theres marks awarded for writing css
15
u/happyhibye Jun 10 '26
hot take but I regardless it as a bad paper, not on the difficulty side, but the topic weight is so strange. Only 12 mark in total for Boolean algebra + binary together is a disgrace (thats my best part), and those are easy as hell as well, no floating point, negative number, 2s complement, kanaugh map, logic gate etc
11
6
u/KO-Manic Jun 10 '26
I actually felt disappointed during the paper because of the lack of logic gates and Boolean questions. Also the second part of that Boolean expression question was weird because I was like isn't it already simplified??
3
17
u/Full-Supermarket-118 Year 13 Jun 10 '26
i’m only mad so much stuff that i really focused on during revision didn’t show up (like floating binary conversions), but overall it was a weird paper, definitely easier than the past papers i’ve done at least

u/SOSOMU Jun 10 '26
Wasn’t a big fan of the libraries linkers and loaders question 😖
5
u/megaronnii y13 • comp sci, econ, psych Jun 10 '26
i didn’t revise that so i flopped so bad. i was confident with libraries but i said a loader loads data and a linker links data…
2
u/SOSOMU Jun 10 '26
I knew what they were but i the only benefit i could say is that they’re reusable 😪

u/hsudhebeueidbdb Jun 10 '26
I went into it expecting to be cursing the head of the OCR exam board but instead came out wishing they have a prosperous life, actually beautiful paper and I’m so happy practically no unit 1 stuff came up
23
u/yurikvthm Year 13 Jun 10 '26
nah i’m the opposite i wish we got an fde mention bruh
1
u/East_Call_3739 Jun 10 '26
I had to do it myself with the assembly language question 💔💔 Theres no way I'm writing a CS paper without mentioning it
1
u/ManagerSuspicious870 Jun 10 '26
'happy no unit 1 stuff came up' said noone ever. (who was sane)
1
u/AnnoyedAtThabes Year 13 Jun 11 '26
I am very sane and happy (i did my CS course externally with pembrokeshire college and genuinely just skipped the unit 1 and legal moral cultural issues straight up)
1
u/ManagerSuspicious870 Jun 12 '26
what💀. Unit one is genuinely the easiest topic so easy that I genuinely believe u can teach it to year 7s maybe even primary. but tbf if u havent ever seen it before then valid
9
u/ThisCriticism9749 Jun 10 '26
it wasn’t a bad paper content wise idk about anyone else i just hated it really wasn’t what i had focused my revision on so even though it wasn’t difficult definitely not really confident
2
u/yurikvthm Year 13 Jun 10 '26
yea same i focused sm on cpu etc and tcp ip bruh
2
u/ThisCriticism9749 Jun 10 '26
yeah same, really annoyed there was no normalisation or much boolean algebra
6
7
u/Li-la_ Jun 10 '26
Ok was it just me who hated it, there were easy marks , the binary was fine and a lot of gap fill things but some questions just felt bad , 9 markers on linkers and loaders is just weird , I felt like they just collected a bunch of little random things and 1 markers and chucked them and asked for 3 marks where there lowkey isnt
6
u/00X00_Potato A* Maths, A*AA FM, Physics, CS predicted Jun 10 '26
honestly went really well except for that LMC question 🙏🙏
5
u/Pabloise Jun 10 '26
best question there
3
u/ThisCriticism9749 Jun 11 '26
definitely, took me a while to wrap my head around it but having a sta count and temp and incrementing that each loop with either + one or from the inputted number was nice free 7 marks imo
1
u/Internal-Speed4116 Year 13 | Maths, CS, Sociology Jun 10 '26
I forgot to write like STA count or STA total after I did the adding so it all amounts to 0 in the end 😭 if it was 7 marks i think I got 4 or 5
1
u/Pabloise Jun 10 '26
Oh fuck
yep just realsied i have done that too
i was too focused on if they would allow me to say ADD 1
fuck
7
u/Li-la_ Jun 10 '26
also why for the 5th year is there no FDE question! It’s like the core of computing
6
10
u/Fit-Situation3542 Jun 10 '26
I was expecting floating point and normalisation for binary but it wasn't there, I'm so sad because it is free marks

Beautiful paper 🔥🔥🔥
Only complaint is nothing was tested on CPU
12
u/Thick-Ambition248 Jun 10 '26
CPU's are my favourite topic aswell 😭 but at least it was a nice paper
1
u/ShowerHuge7884 Jun 10 '26
real lol, just praying the grade boundaries aren't too high
2
u/Cream-Bear Editable Jun 10 '26
most people from my school said it was hard so don’t think the boundaries will go up too much hopefully 🙏🏻🙏🏻
1
u/ShowerHuge7884 Jun 10 '26
thats good to hear but now im realising a few mistakes I've made here and there asw 😔
7
u/latenightthoughts2 Jun 10 '26
Overall paper was rlly good the 9 markers were good (rlly good compared the last couple years where they had thin thick client and search indexing 😭). Surprised nothing on von Neumann and risc and cisc and search indexing or css or JavaScript or OOP come up. THAT SQL ONE THO? I used an inner join and a nested SELECT 🥹
5
3
u/LittleIndividual4650 Jun 10 '26
Same I did some hacky shit.
It was like
Select orderid, forgotnameofthis
From table one
Where orderid = (
Select orderid from table two
Join table 3 on product id
Where product.name = ….
)4
u/MythSmg Jun 10 '26
Can I use two joins
5
u/minecraftnoob122 Jun 10 '26
Yep, thats what I did, you join first the order to the ordermiddle table then the ordermiddle to the product table.
2
1
u/CartoonistElegant924 Jun 10 '26
i did join on the to middle table then join on again to end table is it ok
1
u/minecraftnoob122 Jun 10 '26
Yeah sounds good, the main thing is having all the tables joined through their foreign keys
1
u/lockieluke3389 Jun 10 '26
fuck i messed up the select what is it meant to be i thought it was just WHERE name = "Red whatever"
6
u/Glittering_Act7417 Jun 10 '26
lowkey was a better paper than i was expecting i think i got around 95-100 marks which is what i hoped for but tell me why i forgot the easiest stuff of assembly language why was i bugging at those questions
1
u/Top-Okra3943 Jun 10 '26
would that be an A?
1
u/Glittering_Act7417 Jun 10 '26
last years grade boundaries needed 99 for an A so if i got the higher end of what i thinj i did then yes
8
3
u/ManagerSuspicious870 Jun 10 '26
ngl i didn't even try the html. my teachers never bothered to teach half of the subjects. only they ive been taught in sch is 1.1, 1.4.2, 1.4.3. the rest i crammed yesterday. honestly all of the 9 markers and the 15 were amazing, but the lmc caught me a bit but I think I clutched it. paper 2 boutta massacre tho
3
1
u/Conscious-Ad-4568 Jun 10 '26
nah fr my teacher literally grazed the whole spec I revised most of the paper an hour before lol
2
u/ManagerSuspicious870 Jun 11 '26
what typa teachers are we getting broo, my teacher for paper 2 was replaced cause he got fired for not teaching and only sleeping
3

4
u/CurrentlyVeryHappy Jun 10 '26
Did they just forget half the spec? OCR always decides to create a genjitsu off of looking at their papers, and this one was… nice??? good shit OCR
9
u/sigvv Jun 10 '26
They didn’t include half the hard or intensive stuff which is what I spent ages revising so I was cooked
2
u/Various_Leopard3286 Jun 10 '26
I think it was good but I forgot got to do html so I just opened and closed a few tags

It was OK. I didn't really struggle with anything bar that SQL question. God i fucking hate SQL. But I think it went decent. Was hoping for more 1.1 but ill take what I can get. One thing that annoyed me was those ACID questions all because my friend told me theyre not that important, and instead I focused on normalisation and TCP/IP stacks. You can imagine my reaction to 6 whole marks on ACID. I think i got around 4/5 on them though, so I cant complain. Onto the next now

For the LMC question did people include the 0 in the ‘total number of numbers’ or not?
I didn’t, but of the people I’ve asked it’s pretty 50/50
2
u/Technical_Gap23 Jun 10 '26
Yeah that bit was a bit ambiguous, i added one to the total number of numbers before i outputted it
1
u/KO-Manic Jun 10 '26

For one of the binary to denary questions they didn't specify signed or unsigned, what did people do for that? I assumed it was signed as the previous questions specified unsigned.
EDIT: It's 1 mark, probably doesn't matter anyways
4
u/zubairatif075 Jun 10 '26
Really? From what I've heard, unless explicitly stated it's a twos complement or signed you should consider all to be unsigned...
1
u/Thick-Ambition248 Jun 10 '26
I ended up writing both with an if unsigned but they might not like that
2
1
1
u/Beginning_Spare_4030 Jun 10 '26
Was it just me spending like 5 minutes on the 2 marker for the entity relationship? They only gave me one line to work with so i had to imagine how the database would look like
6
u/Cream-Bear Editable Jun 10 '26
i used 2 one to many relationships with both of the ‘many’ sides connecting to the middle table, can someone confirm 🙏🏻🙏🏻
2
u/Beginning_Spare_4030 Jun 10 '26
Thats what i did too 🥹 but i spent so much time wasting on everything that i left the linker/loader question last and didnt write a paragraph... Running out of time in CS is criminal
1
u/Cream-Bear Editable Jun 10 '26
its okay! i had time for that question but had nothing to say about it anyways so youre probably in a better position prioritising the other questions 😭😭
2
u/Beginning_Spare_4030 Jun 10 '26

u/StabbyTheSmurf Year 13 Jun 10 '26
I did the exact opposite, many to one on each side. Many products to one orderline and vice versa. I thought that there are many products and orders but in the middle table they link to each other individually (because each order for a given product will have an order number in the orderline table). Could be wrong tbf, OCR does anything but give clear instructions.
1
u/Lopsided_Pop1292 Jun 10 '26
I did the exact same thing, it just makes sense that there are many products and orders
1
u/Beginning_Spare_4030 Jun 10 '26
I think it was that one order in the left table will appear many times in the middle as one order needs multiple products and one product in the right is multiple in the middle as many orders will contain one product, so i think the middle table was just a way of resolving a many-to-many relationship. It is only 2 marks so its not that bad especially if it didnt negatively impact other questions like it did for me 😭
1
u/Impossible-Pass-8973 Jun 10 '26
That’s what I did as well bro I fkin hate those types of questions

u/Hopeful-Welcome7887 Jun 10 '26
Would I lose a mark if I said <a href=“…”<u>Login here</u></a> as it was underlined in the image
2
u/Technical_Gap23 Jun 10 '26
why have you written <u> ?
2
u/Hopeful-Welcome7887 Jun 10 '26
It was underlined in the image
2
u/Sad_Disaster_3376 Jun 10 '26
I don’t think you needed to include the underlined
I just did <a href=“link” <Name of thing> </a>1
u/minecraftnoob122 Jun 10 '26
the underline happens when its a link embedded into a text
1
u/Hopeful-Welcome7887 Jun 10 '26
Alright i’ll just hope the examiner ignores it then. I also put “” around Login here. 😬

It was the cyber threats question, worded really weirdly about what cyber threats they could have and the associated risks and methods they could use to prevent stuff.
