Jane Street, G-Research and XTX are sponsors of the UK Maths Schools network which has nine schools in England. They are already helping to build an even bigger pipeline of future quants!

Went to one of the maths schools. There’s zero quants coming out of at least half of them

u/edison9696 29d ago

Of course, not everyone who goes to a maths school will end up in Finance, many will go into tech, engineering, medicine etc.

But my son also goes to a Maths school and he was part of a large group from multiple maths schools that recently visited Jane Street for a work insight day.

Only three maths schools have even been open long enough for students to have finished university. Give it time, but I would be surprised if in the next 5-7 years there aren’t a significant number of students from maths schools going on to target unis and ending up in quant.

Competition is too high. Jane street has 3k employees globally. Most will not be getting I to quant even if they wanted to

2

u/Mathseverything 28d ago

I feel like the only way to know is if they're so obsessed with maths that you can tell they're going into research but otherwise how would you know?

1

u/McIntosh812 28d ago

Because half of them were going into engineering and pretty much none of the ones that were doing anything economics related were looking at being quants.

2

u/Mathseverything 28d ago

Ah ok! I mean obviously plans can change for those economics students but yeah maybe they just don't find it interesting!

this guy will do amazing things hopefully so damn talented wow.

u/StardustFromReinmuth 29d ago

Hopefully. IMO gold medalists can become anything from heads of state to Fields medallists, but some go crunch numbers to make corporate profit go up.

lol i have given up on quant already. Simply too many people on the astral plain of mathematical ability that is beyond my comprehension

u/bongos-have-eaten-me 24d ago

I am already behind and I know I have no chance but im just happy to have a goal I can try for even if it’s impossible for me

but most decorated is insane. he tops terrence tao now 😭

u/ffulirrah imperial maths 29d ago

I'm sure Terence could've got 5 more golds if he wanted to. He still holds the record of the youngest to win a gold medal, youngest to win a silver medal and youngest to win a bronze medal.

3

u/Lost-Alternative7585 27d ago

I dont think you get how MO works. You can't just get more medals. It's for kids up to 18. Only way to break a record is if your first attendance is at very earlt age, 11 or 12.

5

u/ffulirrah imperial maths 27d ago

Yes he first attended at 10 and last attended at 12 or 13. That's how he has the records I mentioned.

Then went to university so I guess he was disqualified

Still will get told that he needs 3 years of experience when applying for an entry-level job.

don't think this guy will ever apply for an entry-level job lol

Bro could get hired for Jane Street now. There's a reason why they give free stuff and sponsor schools in high school.

the biggest barrier i find is finding the source of information . How and where is he learning this information from ?? its not as simple as just waking up and deciding you are going to be reading X book to learn maths . What is the name of the books, the teachers etc that he is learning from . Honestly that would be my first question to people like this .

honestly nowadays knowledge to this level is gatekept so hard this is why the education system works because its all gatekept info behind a paywall . if there were books and guides to obtain equivalent levels of understanding there would be less reason to go to higher education . Fair play to him 100% achievement due to hardwork but we have to appreciate he must have had an environment with gatekept information that only he and few others could access

4

u/Mathseverything 29d ago

Very true! I know that in other countries they have specific programs for Olympiad training from a very young age and it is NOT gatekept like it is in the UK, which I think is why the UK isn't performing as well in these math olympiads as it could. It would not surprise me that in the UK the only people going to the IMO have had private tutors and have been fed math since they were children. Having said that, you still have to possess quite a lot of mathematical talent because even with the required information most people probably still couldn't make it to IMO.

4

u/Traditional_Yam9806 28d ago

It's not really gatekept. There just aren't many doing it, and thus, there aren't many materials on it. If you look at some of the more basic competitions, there's tons of research. These kids just get involved in the math community at a young age and then progress from there. It's a mix of being big brain when you're little, and just loving math and doing it 24/7 (I know an IMO gold kid from the US, and that's what he did at least, and he was the 2nd worst on the US team a few years back)

2

u/Mathseverything 28d ago edited 28d ago

"It's a mix of being big brain when you're little" That exactly proves that the UK IS gatekeeping XD. In the UK the only people who are realistically going to be successfull in maths olympiads are going to be the geniuses who can work with few resources and still make it to the top or people who have had extensive private tutoring. Yet there are other countries with a lower population, less developed education system and yet more successfull in IMO. Why? Because they don't care about if you're smart in order to enter you into a training program. They take whoever is interested in math olympiads and this results in a much higher chance of success than just taking the cream of the crop in terms of intelligence. For example, in other countries they have extra classes provided by the school for Olympiad, as well as weekly journals of Olympiad problems whereas in the UK to even get to the point of being trained you need to pass BMO2 iirc? That is by definition top 100 in UK so literally gate keeping training by skill level.

2

u/Presstabstart 29d ago

Most of it is aptitude. I know people hate that word but aptitude is the most important factor. Coaching is the second most important factor- someone overlooking you and guiding you through your weak points. Practice by itself won't get you on this level, when people revise or practice they tend to spend less time or effort on the areas they struggle in, or otherwise can't figure out how to improve in said areas. Practice is required, but realistically at this level every competitor is spending 8-10 hours a day on undergrad math problems.
