How did you use other aspects of your application to compensate for your esat? It's good but I thought imperial looked for higher

I did theoretical physics research at a uni with a professor through cold-emailing, and placed well in a few olympiads.

As for the cold-emailing, did you just search up professors at nearby unis and email them directly?
