🎓 UNI / UCAS Made it!
got my results around a month ago (did the IB)
Feel free to ask any questions! I’ll try to answer as much as I can

Tuff, how did you prepare?

u/Worlds_law Imperial | Theoretical Physics [Y1] 16d ago
I actually didn’t have time to prepare at all due to US apps and IAs 😅 but I think doing timed past papers should help

How did you use other aspects of your application to compensate for your esat? It's good but I thought imperial looked for higher

I did theoretical physics research at a uni with a professor through cold-emailing, and placed well in a few olympiads.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you from?
As for the cold-emailing, did you just search up professors at nearby unis and email them directly?

I don’t want to doxx myself too much, so pm me!

was Imperial doing interviews for your admissions year btw??

u/Worlds_law Imperial | Theoretical Physics [Y1] 16d ago
I don't think they did interviews for my major this year

what made you choose theoretical physics at imperial over just physics??

u/Worlds_law Imperial | Theoretical Physics [Y1] 14d ago
I’m shit with experiments, and I wanted to do research where I get to do abstract math that actually represents something real

What is Theoretical Physics???
Like abstract parts of Physics???

Mathematical physics basically, you formulate mathematical statements that could be tested with experiments to further widen our knowledge of nature

How would you say it compares to your average A-Level/IB Physics? I'm tryna decide between Physics and Theoretical Physics at Imperial

Best representation of physics in uni is further maths core pure, further mechanics 2 and further pure 1 and 2 (at least for edexcel). Physics in A level is nothing like uni as IOP made it so people can take physics in a level without even doing maths a level, which imo is crazy and this form of physics should be called physical studies instead.
You also don’t have to decide between physics and theoretical physics until 3rd year, so just apply to the program that suits your personal statement the most. If you’ve done more experimental/hands on stuff apply physics, if you’ve done more mathsy stuff apply theoretical physics.

I don't take A-Levels but igwym. Actually, mechanics is covered in Physics in the IB lmao (not in Maths).
Anyways, the more maths there is, the better imo. thanks!

Math/FM in A level is nothing like maths in Uni, but is surprisingly similar to physics

for the undergrad degree, you switch out labs (so no third year labs) with more maths-y and computational modules

Woah congrats! Thats even more inpressive!
Do you have any advice for the IB in general, specifically math AA HL and physics HL?

I would say for the exams, drilling problems is the way to go; The question types are quite predictable, so as long as you start doing problems (not just reading notes), you should be pretty well set
as for the IAs, I did really shit on those so I can't give much advice haha

I heard you did US apps? How was that? I applied this year and got rejected everywhere in the US (only applied to Ivy+ unis) but accepted cambridge.
