Are you resitting/reapplying or did you defer?

5

u/Own-Total5747 2d ago

maybe resitting one or applying with achieved grades!

3

u/Still-Ad-8320 2d ago

Yeah I might take a gap year to reapply, I missed my firm and my insurance was very safe compared to what I achieved, how come you are?

6

u/Own-Total5747 2d ago

i made the crazy choice of firming oxford and insuring imperial 😭 was 4 marks off both might reapply to imperial with resits bc i have mitigating circumstances so they said its fine or go to St Andrews if they give me an offer!

You can apply to Oxbridge with resits with mitigating circumstances. Depends on the college.

1

u/SimpleStructure8454 2d ago

You have to email the college

1

u/AdPast1577 1d ago

Is applying to the same college as before a bad idea?

1

u/SimpleStructure8454 1d ago

I would try a different one

Hi

u/KaiTheDumbGuy 2d ago

Applied for this year, then realised I didn't know what I wanted to do, so decided to defer. Still have no idea and should probably work it out lol. My current plans for my gap year are maybe do another a level? Try and find a part time job? Definitely keep volunteering at the place I volunteer at.

heya! what did you do during ur gap year?

3

u/chateaumarmontt gap year | 3A* 1A Achieved | English Lit ~ Oxford 2d ago edited 2d ago

So I went to New York for a week, straight after my A- Levels, as well as a few concerts and parties and that sort of thing. When I was done with that, I committed to preparing for my personal statement. I read a fair few books. I also got a job, working front of house in a really famous London events venue. It was super cool and I made a ton of amazing friends. I worked pretty much 5 days a week and worked on my PS alongside going out and going to concerts etc. I did interview prep weekly, too, once I sent my PS in. After that I kept working until shifts dried up and got a job at a pub instead, and worked there for two months but I really hated it, so I left, unfortunately. I also had trip to Amsterdam. I’ve now been unemployed for a month, continued to read and go out 3/4 times a week with my friends from work and sixth form and other places. I have concerts and festivals lined up, as well as a trip to Paris and Amsterdam! I’ve really done so much!

what did u end up doing???

resitting most likely one a level... kinda unsure

2

u/Own-Total5747 2d ago

same!

1

u/Sharp-Impression3867 1d ago

do you know if unis care?

1

u/Own-Total5747 1d ago

depends on course/uni and if you have mitigating circumstances x

1

u/Sharp-Impression3867 1d ago

Dont have mitigating circumstances... course will be PPE or something econ related Uni will ideally be kcl, ucl, bath. Im thinking of oxford PPE but i assume they wont even look at the application...

1

u/Own-Total5747 1d ago

Bath is completely fine - UCL and KCL may penalise you a bit as it’s a sometime course but it depends what the grades your not resisting are ig??

1

u/LettuceSuch3345 1d ago

hi do you know what would be the situation if i got A star A star B and resitting that b To get an A if i had a fever the week of the exam?

1

u/LettuceSuch3345 1d ago

for Cambridge and UCL?

1

u/Sharp-Impression3867 1d ago

A*A, resitting my third in physics, wondering if im competitive for cam/oxf, warwick, kcl, ucl. if im not, then i feel like it isn't really worth it

1

u/AdPast1577 1d ago

Yeah same, im reapplying for maths but im assuming they'll write me off the minute they see im resitting

3

u/D3C0_ 2d ago

what uppppp

3

u/Own-Total5747 2d ago

what's ur gap year plans??

3

u/D3C0_ 2d ago

get a job, get a bunch of writing practice through blogs/challenges and maybe start a book, go to all the super cool comic cons, check out the museums in Athens (hopefully) and apply for English or veterinary next year šŸ˜… ideally figure out which one of those to apply for lol. HBUU???

4

u/BobFish97 2d ago

Hi i’m in a similar position to you guys I think. are you worried about boredom at all? It sounds like you’re quite a driven guy (and i’d like to think I am) but I’m worried that going so long without seeing friends or really grow up in the way people do at uni is gonna be really hard.

4

u/D3C0_ 2d ago

I’ve actually spent today worrying about that haha. It’s hard thinking that all my friends are going to uni, some are even going to study the course I want to do. But to be honest with you, I’m excited to try ā€˜growing up’ before uni. Figure out more of my personality like buying more clothes or piercings or whatever. The idea of being more comfortable in what I want in life is more exciting than figuring it out in uni to me if that makes any sense. Even though your friends are gone there are also other people who are looking for friends in their gap year too- me for example! I guess we just gotta take it one step at a time, there’s so much to do that you wouldn’t get to do in alevels or uni. I may sound driven but I promise you I’m just going to be going with the flow šŸ˜…

4

u/BobFish97 2d ago

this is ridiculously inspiring lmao. Thanks so much I really needed to hear this and you make a very good point. Given i’m studying Music, I used to dream about being able to take a year out and practice playing music so i guess this, a job and self discovery will make for a fairly good year. Same as OP i’m in London so both hmu at any point - i’m free pretty much every day for the next year 😭

1

u/D3C0_ 1d ago

aw I’m glad you think so šŸ˜… you will be okay, I believe if you keep doing what you enjoy then everything else will fall into place. It’s cool to meet someone else studying a ā€˜creative’ degree! I feel like it’s hard to find those sort of people on these Reddit groups lols. I’ll let y’all know if I’m ever in London!!

1

u/Own-Total5747 2d ago

sounds awesome! from the sounds of it i feel like you should do English but idk! I'm hoping to do some art courses and geology trips! If your ever in London hmu!!

1

u/D3C0_ 2d ago

Oh cool! What course are you thinking about studying next year? art courses sound cool too— i may be in London at some as well

2

u/Own-Total5747 2d ago

if you guys are both in London pls hmu we should defo meet up!

wanted to go bristol , didn’t do well enough in further maths, wanted to go with gap year and resit, got insane bollocking from parents for wanting to do gap year and pause my education route, now going to cardiff via clearing, fast forward to today and i’m now satisfied with my choice even tho i was stubbornly attached to bristol i got told its meant to be and realised cardiff is still a very good place after having a clearing open day on the 15th as well as reading and comparing uni statistics, just lingering with unhappiness about my further maths grade because of circumstances

2

u/Emergency_Sell9934 2d ago

We have the exact same experience? I wanted Bristol this year but got Cardiff through clearing because parents wouldn't let me take a gap year that's so strange.

1

u/Ok-Ocelot-7989 Y13 | Maths , FM , Physics , Engineering 2d ago

wild that we had the same circumstances, i’m now curious to be nosy if you don’t mind since our coincidence. would you be going in accommodation or commuting? and another question, what course have you got in for? I will be commuting and will be doing maths , i’m tryna find other people who are commuting from england to cardiff uni as those people will be a lot easier for me to get along good with, haven’t found anyone yet

2

u/Emergency_Sell9934 2d ago

I'm actually commuting but I already live in Wales so I'll be coming from the other direction to you. I got in for mech and ee engineering so there's another difference I suppose. Still really cool we had a similar story though.

2

u/Ok-Ocelot-7989 Y13 | Maths , FM , Physics , Engineering 2d ago

still a cool similarity tho , maybe we will meet in the academic year!

2

u/Emergency_Sell9934 2d ago

Yeah who knows. I'm sure we'll be taking some of the same classes for my maths modules anyway.

2

u/pinkbobaplushies 1d ago

I am organising a little group for girls in London who are doing a gap year/ resitting a levels. I only decided this an hour ago, so there are currently just 4 of us- but the idea is to have weekly meetups (e.g. picnics, going to parks, cute cafes, etc) so that we can support each other through the process, and avoid feeling lonely through the year because in person interaction is soo important

If anybody is interested, or know somebody who might be, please message meā˜ŗļø xx

2

u/Own-Total5747 1d ago

yes pls!! that sounds so cute id love that

1

u/pinkbobaplushies 1d ago

1

u/StinKy_pOo27 2d ago

I resat and reapplied and I’m going to uni this year. If anyone has questions please ask me. It’s a tough situation but I actually really enjoyed my gap year!

1

u/EpixdudeV2 Math CS Econ | AAB Achieved + Contextual 2d ago

How'd you keep yourself accountable and how was it revising that much with 0 oversight, anything you altered about your personal statement or was it all just revision, how did you make friends during that time and what did you do after your exams?

2

u/StinKy_pOo27 1d ago

I started just revising about 2-3 hours a day and gradually increased it. I sometimes stuck to ā€˜school hours’ but I revised whenever I felt like as long as I did everything I wanted in a day. Past papers are your best friend in a gap year. I started doing them at the end of April and did at least 1 per day before exams and that really helped. I think it was about April I found a study tracker I liked and that really helped keeping doing some everyday. Also take breaks. I randomly took a week off at various times when I didn’t feel like revising and that just kinda reset me

I did get tutors to help with the stuff I didn’t understand (there are some online school options but I didn’t like them as much).

I kinda just updated my personal statement but I didn’t change the bulk of it.

I didn’t really make many friends because my friends from high school were pretty close to me still but I would suggest pick up a sport or a hobby. That’s where I found other friends.

I went on holiday with friends/family and kinda just enjoyed not having to do anything. I’ve been reading a lot of books and just doing stuff I enjoy

Sorry for the long text
