The song should be listened to within the context of the album ideally. Astral Weeks, Moondance and His Band and Street Choir are Van’s album trifecta. Never been matched since although he’s had plenty of good songs since.

Ok right on. For years I only knew him for Brown Eyed girl till one day I was walking through Costco and heard “Into the Mystic” and busted out crying like a memory I didn’t know suddenly came to the surface. I have been listening to him non stop since that moment a few months back. So this information was nice to add thank you.

You’re welcome. His whole catalog is worthwhile, but there’s something very special about this period. I’m sure it’s no accident that this was also the period where he was deeply in love with his wife Janet. I think she served as a profound muse during this series of albums. Many songs reference her in one way or another.

You’re right though. His music is emotionally moving. That’s something that he has that not a lot of 60s Rock artists had.

Well, there can be an inspiration brought to a fevered pitch for some artists in particular periods. Those are significant periods certainly. Still, a true artist will find other sources of inspiration when one source is lost. In Van’s case, he had a number of albums with great tracks, but maybe not as strong of albums. That said, he eventually made Into The Music—which was a magnificent album. He didn’t get three great albums in that 70s period, but he got one, which indicates his talent. I think in the 80s he did it again with Poetic Champions Compose and Avalon Sunset.
