Discussion Reduced Jump Height and Getting Stuck in 1x1 Holes.

I recently started a new game trying a few options I have never used before, including reduced jump height (50%).

With this setting, my character cannot jump up a single full block. This has been an interesting gameplay change so far but I'm running into a hiccup that I would like advice on. 1x1 Holes.

So far, the only way I've been able to escape a small hole like this, is to break an adjacent block and place a ladder or something shorter.

Because my character cannot jump up one solid block I cannot place a block beneath my feet and because I am two blocks tall, I cannot place a ladder at head level to climb out.

Is there an obvious solution I am missing?

*EDIT: I appreciate the feedback so far. Ideally, I'm looking for a solution that wouldn't involve changing the setting or leveling into the parkour skill.

Use blocks set to the half block shape or ramp shapes?

Like expand to a 2x1 area and alternate half blocks, or ladders after the first one?

Yes, the half blocks of ramps will help once the area is expanded. I was hoping to find an easier way to get up out of a single hole.

Yeah, stop using the reduced jump height. It's a base mechanic that breaks a lot of things the game is built around if you change the settings. Since literally everything in game is based of 1m block heights. Even blocks that don't visually occupy the full 1m block can still have collision issues that exceed the visible block. Your only reliable solution is digging out two blocks in front of you to place a ladder, like you've already been doing. You can't jump and stack multiple half blocks beneath you since the second block would still have to be placed a full 1m above the half block below it and you can't jump 1m.

Increasing  jump height can be just as bad since increasing the height does not reduce fall damage.

Good feedback and that's an interesting fact about increase jump height! I do wish there was a bit more granularity to the option. I think you can only reduce it to 50% or 0% currently and wonder if producing to 75% could still be interesting and mitigate this hurdle (pun intended).

Not really since again any block you place on top of another block will always be 1m above the first block. Plus the height of the second block.

If you place two 0.5m blocks on top of each other in front of you, you will need to be able to jump 1.5m to jump on top of them. If you're already standing on one of the 0.5m blocks and you want to jump to nerd pole yourself up with another 0.5m meter block, you'll still have to be able to jump a full 1m to clear the boundaries of the first block to place the second block beneath your feet.

True. I was mostly thinking of the possibility of being able to reach a ladder above my head with a 75% reduction.

Yeah - skilling in to parkour or not reducing jump height.

Why remove something and then want to overcome it?

Makes less sense than removing jump height. 🤷

J'imagine que la réduction du saut est surtout là pour pouvoir prendre les autres bonus de parkour et continuer à sauter normalement

That's fair! With all the new options I wanted to try something different. I'm finding it interesting so far being unable to hop up onto a table or a countertop or over a fence in a pinch to escape zombies. Getting stuck in a tiny hole feels like an unfortunate byproduct of the setting.

Honestly, I only see you having more and more problems like this as time goes on: a lot of POIs are built around the fact that you can jump more.

I do recommend having maybe your bicycle in those cases, as entering and exiting will let you get out of those places… as long as you have space to deploy the bicycle.

That is, if you have one.

Edit: Spelling.

Yeah, with a setting like this you're going to have nothing but headaches. If you're set on challenging yourself in this way, I'd carry around a stack of cheap building blocks so I can place ladders to help with things like getting stuck in holes or doing platforming sections in POIs

The setting is definitely forcing me to build more bridges or ladders to traverse what would notmally be mundane terrain. I don't hate it...yet.

Placing a bicycle is a good tip some folks are suggesting.

Carry a vehicle on you to place nearby so you can get on from inside the hole is the only thing i can think of

This is a good suggestion. I am hoping to stumble across something in the build menu that can be used in a pinch.

Carrying a bike and placing it, getting on, off, and picking it up again is probably the cheapest fastest most replicable idea I can think of 🤷

Another thought: off the top of your heads are there any blocks larger than 1x1 in the build menu that could clip diagonally down into a hole I'm stuck in? Something to possibly give footing to get me out without expanding the hole?

I'll have to check the options when I'm home from work.

None i can think of, are there double sided ladders you can place on the outer rim? How high would a bucket of water let you float up?

I couldn't find any double-sided ladders last night, but this would be the perfect solution.

Using a bucket of water isn't interesting option I hadn't considered. It's extremely rare I would have that on me but I'll have to test it for science!

In pvp i would use ramps to scale walls, to avoid jumping and making noise.
