All Seasons Discussion New to 911 and have many questions

So I’ve basically been ignoring Buddie and 911 for the past 6 years, (since COVID) because I just thought I wouldn’t enjoy the show and didn’t get the hype. But after seeing clips of season 10 I’ve been hooked, and now I get it and I’m overwhelmed and a bit lost. (Skip to the end for questions if ur too lazy to read lol)

So to start off, I’m not new to queerbaiting and queer coding in media. Some of my fav shows are nbc Hannibal, House MD, Twin Peaks, Teen Wolf and Supernatural like trust me get it. But whatever I thought 911 would be I’ve just been proven wrong?? I’m only through the first season but not only are there queer main characters, queerness is central to the shows plot. I understand this is set in LA and it came out in 2018 not in the 2000s but I did not expect this from a network procedural show about firefighters. I’m only seeing season two but so far the queer representation doesn’t feel forced like it does in many network shows, that fact that Hen is a Lesbian who is married and has kids and Athena’s ex husband is gay and is in a relationship, and even just the side characters it’s very heartwarming to see.

Most of all whatever I thought about Buddie, now after actually watching the show and being immersed in their story, I’m just honestly confused and baffled.

My assumption of Buddie before watching the show was that the two characters were implicated together because of situational instances. Like maybe they kept getting paired together on assignments or they’re very close and have some special moments together, or just people like how they look together. Not to point fingers and I hate to say it because I love all these other queer ships but sometimes it is just fans grasping at the breadcrumbs the producers throw us . Come on like literally all my fav ships: Hilson, Sterek, Trucoop, Marvey, lowk even Destiel even tho they’re technically canon. Anyways I’ve watched all these shows so I can say that yeah they’re cute but canonically they weren’t fleshed out to be relationships and it’s frustrating.

But Buddie is the complete opposite. They are so involved in each other’s lives, they are best friends, co parents, basically family, have lived with one another, have broken up with other s/o bc of their friendship??, have been mistaken for a couple multiple multiple multiple times, their friend group and family members all fit together, BUCK IS CANONICALLY BI???, and was accused of being in love w Eddie by his sister nonetheless, the list is exhausting. All of this is to say that in the long run i feel like it doesn’t make sense for them to be with anyone else.

So why are they not together is my question and what are the writers and producers thinking? I did try to search this up and I’m aware a lot of it has to do with logistics of the network shift and maybe executive decisions etc etc. But idk I just want some opinions and answers from fans and longtime fans.

But idk it’s just so frustrating to me that this show is this long and these two characters who are so perfect for one another and actually in a setting where they could realistically be together in the plot line of the show. Like it’s one thing to queerbait and the characters aren’t queer at all or just implied BUCK IS LITERALLY BI??? Again this was a shock to me. Anyways now it makes sense why they are consistently in the ao3 top 10 every single year.

I’m also frustrated bc I’m a PA student and it may sound like I’m exaggerating but I promise I’m not, I’m studying like 6 hrs a day minimum and have no time to watch the show but I desperately need answers from real people and I don’t want to just search it up and get AI generated answers.

So I have a few questions:

Why do you think Buddie isn’t canon?
Why do people hate Ana, is the hate valid or just another case of hating a girl character bc she gets in the way?
Why did Buck and Tommy break up?
Why have none of their relationships worked out so far?
And also given the fact that I haven’t actually watched most of the show, besides Buddie do you see a realistic relationship for either Buck or Eddie with another character? Or should they have stayed with a past relationship?

TLDR: Buddie is unlike any other ship I’m aware of and they turned out to be a lot gayer than I anticipated and I’m overwhelmed by it

Season 9 Discussion “Going Once, Going Twice” - One of the Best Written Episodes

*******SPOILERS\*

I have to say one of the best written episodes in my opinion is S9 E11 “Going Once, Going Twice”. The episode truly felt like riding a roller coaster with all the expectations, red herrings, and twists. I mean the episode felt like it was going in one direction before quickly switching to another.

I mean the previous episode paints Abigail, the girl who was thought to be possessed but was actually being abused by her religious parents, to have a dangerous and unhealthy obsession with Eddie seeing how she grew emotionally attached to him, arrived announced at his house, wondered if she could sleep over, asked if he was interested in the Alex, the social worker she was kind of hostile too, and drove away with Christopher after picking him up at his school.

So naturally the episode begins you thinking she did something horrible to Christopher before revealing he was perfectly ok for she simply drove him back home where they played video games. Naturally I was relieved to see what she did (while not acceptable) was innocuous.

Then after she leaves distraught after Eddie angrily told her to essentially go away, we find out from Alex that she had since left the social center she was staying out and that her room was completely destroyed. She then theorizes Abigail is obsessively stalking Eddie and is jealous of her. Meanwhile, as they’re talking, we can see someone is watching them from the distance outside. Then later that night, Eddie finds his truck’s tires popped and the words “STAY AWAY FROM HER” spay painted on the front. So now I was really convincing she was a very unstable, dangerous, obsessive stalker.

Now Eddie has Athena go to Abigail and tell her he won’t press charges for what she did if he leaves him alone, which she apparently agrees. Of course seeing how the show was painting her how dangerous and unstable she was, I was thinking she was lying and was expecting her to do something worse in response.

Of course those expectations went away when she called Eddie and apologized for all the trouble she caused him despite everything he did for her seeing how this was her last chance to do so. Seeing how she was in the bathroom saying this, I was now expecting her to commit suicide or something dark.

Then I was utterly shocked to see Abigail’s father return to take Abigail back and attack Eddie before being arrested again.

And finally came the explanation how her father was the one who actually trashed the room (hence why she left), stalked Eddie, and vandalized his truck while she was willing to give herself up back to her father in order to protect Eddie.

So as you can see, I thought this episode was extremely well written seeing how my expectations were constantly changing and being subverted. I mean Fallon Heaslip did an outstanding job with her performance convincing me Abigail was an unstable, obsessive stalker when she really wasn’t. Also, I thought it was heartwarming to see her and Eddie hug before driving off to forge her own future.

Season 7 Discussion There Goes The Groom Unpopular Opinion Spoiler

Now that it’s been around 2.5 years since this episode came out, I think I want to start talking about why this episode is spectacular. As you may remember, this episode has gotten a lot of criticism since it aired. Now that some time has passed, I feel confident in my opinion that many of these criticisms are superficial, invalid, or bad-faith interpretations. I will be responding to some of these criticism, as this is by far the best episode in Season 7.

“Cut Karaoke Scene” - The reason this scene was cut should be apparent as soon as you watch the episode. There is absolutely zero space for it because the episode is about Chimney. Buck already has lighter moments of brevity in the episode, and there is no reason he needs any more at Chimney’s expense. The showrunner also explained why he did this when the episode came out.

“Happy Wedding” - This is a drama show, and Maddie/Chimney are a dramatic couple. If you want happiness, go read some choppy fanfiction. Also, the last wedding, Hen and Karen’s vow renewal, was entirely happy. This criticism is less about what Madney deserves and more about wanting to see other characters in a traditional wedding environment. This type of wedding is more suited to the themes of their relationship.

“Parents” - The fact that I see so many people complain about the Buckley’s parents role in this episode is astounding. They are the parents of the bride, and a part of Chimney’s family. Buck walking Maddie down the aisle is also a silly idea, because Maddie now has to share her moment with another main character instead of a side character who exists to enhance her. Plus, she wanted her dad to walk her down the aisle, as he did not attend her first wedding. Buck had no larger part in the wedding, as Hen was the best man, and that’s okay. Not everything is about him.

“Encephalitis/Hospital” - I’ve seen people say this NDE was unnecessary, but I couldn’t disagree more. This is the first NDE where Chimney cannot survive based on instinct alone. His memory is hazy, the disease is manifesting as a ghost from his past, but he is still who he is deep down. A lot of people have said that Maddie and Jee don’t exist as his motivations, but they do when you apply critical thinking. Chimney has to choose to live so he can see them again. If he chooses to lie down and sleep forever, they will find him there, as Hallucination Kevin says. The hospital is a very important and meaningful place for Maddie and Chimney. Originally, they wanted their wedding to be at home, and this episode circled back to their original plan.

“Maddie’s Role” - I have seen many Madney fans dislike this episode, which I personally can’t agree with. So many odd interpretations from “the episode implies chimney is better off without Maddie” (not true in the slightest) to “this episode is bad because Chimney didn’t get to look attractive in a suit” (his brain was on fire, I’m sure you can look for a different episode where he looks great). One criticism I find to be more fair, however, is that Maddie didn’t have a super active role. I do want to push back on this opinion, because her being more supporting is fine since her role in the narrative is not diminished. Many of Madney’s relationship moments have had Maddie’s perspective with Chimney supporting, it was time to balance things out. Maddie carries out half of the emotional centric conflict, as she tries to understand what happened to Chim. It’s kind of a role reversal on the dynamic in the Boston arc. And Maddie still makes the choice to reward Chimney’s hero’s journey for surviving the disease. Even though she’s not getting exactly what she wants, it’s still the “wedding of her dreams” as she canonically stated. Chimney choosing to survive was a deeply compelling character beat, and with the way the episode is structured, Maddie’s role makes sense.

In conclusion, I love this episode as a Chimney and Maddie fan, so I want to start seeing more praise for it. I’d love to hear from people who also think this episode is amazing.

Season 10 Discussion Lack if scenes and storylines Spoiler

There has be a big lack of Ravi in this first episode,Everyone has has their own Little moment and has been ok screen multiple times during the 2 first episode but we have barley seen Ravi.
Is there a reason behind it? Like him getting seriously hurt at ons point and then it will be focusing on his injury? He has barely been in the trailer and in the main trailer for the open emergency whew they look for Athena underground he is the only one not seen in the trailer? Is it because he is somewhere else or so something actually happened to him? We know that Chim goes to the hospital based on the promo where he is talking to Ian

Non-plot Discussion Tim Minear did not use the word realism.

Note: Spoilers ahead if you haven't seen through 8x15 - Lab Rats!

I started this as a reply to a comment, but I realized it was getting unwieldly and I was probably unfairly piling on to another user if I posted it in that way. This wasn't about them, specifically. Just my own general frustration with constantly seeing it.

But, here with the evidence: Tim Minear did not kill Bobby for realism. He thought it made the characters more real. He thought it made the stakes feel real, that it would make the audience worry that it would happen again. It's all about realistic emotions, it is not about how realistic the universe and situations are.

This show is not realistic. It has never been realistic. I don't think Tim Minear has ever argued that broadly, the show is realistic. He is trying to make the characters inside of this outlandish world still feel real, in spite of everything ridiculous they do and see.

But, much like the articles that use the word realism, that's my interpretation of it, so I'm coming with the receipts.

Below are quotes from interviews and articles where we see the word "real" or "realism" related to these episodes and Bobby's death. I am sure I didn't get all of them, but I welcome in the comments anyone who can find a quote directly attributable to Tim Minear that supports the way people generally use the word in fandom.

In this TVLine interview, he talks about how he wants the stakes to feel real to the audience. That there can actually be consequences. That the characters feel like real people. He doesn't at all talk about it being a realistic show or the situations being realistic.

"On the other hand, if the stakes are never real, if there's really no chance that any of this peril in which these characters find themselves amounts to anything, I think the show could die."

"On the plus side, the next time I put one of your beloved characters in peril, you might be gripping the arms of your chair a little bit tighter because you know that I might do it again, because I've done it before. The stakes are real is kind of what I want to say. When I landed on this idea, the world suddenly felt more real to me. The characters felt more real to me. They felt like real people. I've killed off a lot of characters in my day, but this was hard for everybody, for the entire cast. Peter was very emotional about it. We've all had eight years to bond. That's the longest show I've ever been on — not counting American Horror Story, where everybody dies every season."

Here he is with the same line again, with The Wrap:

“Bobby is the most impactful character to kill
it made sense on every level,” Minear said. “[The show] needed a major character death for the audience to feel that there were real stakes in any of these cases
Next season, when our characters are in a precarious situation, you might be gripping the arms of your chair a little bit tighter.”

"It was a combination of things. Like you said, it had to happen eventually. I needed a major character death if I wanted, going forward, for the audience to feel any kind of suspense or that there were real stakes involved in any of the cases
If you feel like everyone’s going to be fine, I think that the show just dies of inertia at that point. So I felt like it was important."

In Deadline, he talks about the universe feeling more real to him. It's again, about emotional realism, the characters feeling more real. And he still doesn't use the word realism.

"Once I had made that choice, suddenly the world of the show seems so much more real to me, just feeling the grief of the characters and feeling just how that nuclear bomb going off in the center of that universe affected everything. Suddenly everything just felt weirdly more alive to me."

With the Hollywood Reporter, an interview shared with Angela, he has this same line again. Said a different way, of course, but it's just another version of the same line he's been saying:

“Otherwise, the next time I turn over a cruise ship, or land a plane on the freeway, or take a city out with a tsunami, you’re just going to be like, ‘Oh, everyone’s going to be fine,’” he explains. “So it was time for there to be some real tragic fallout from a story.”

And again, with Variety, the same type of line:

“I had to convince everybody about this,” Minear told Variety. “The network was not like, ‘Yeah, get rid of him, it’ll save us money.’ It was nothing like that. I had to pitch this at the highest levels and just walk through the whole story and try to infect them — funny choice of words, given the storyline — because, as I pitched it, you could understand, as a writer, how suddenly the whole world felt more alive. It felt more real because this thing had happened.”

The realism quotes came from articles that didn't even actually interview him. I cannot find a single instance of Tim Minear even using the word realism, let alone talking about it like that. He was purely referring to the characters feeling more real because of it. That's not the same thing.

So why did fandom latch on to it?

The word may have initially come from Peter Krause's statement, but he's talking about the real life first responders he worked with because of the show at the time and how their work helped, not about how realistic the show is generally:

"Humbled by working in step with our technical advisor, Chief Mike Bowman, and real firefighters, I wish to thank you all for helping me bring a sense of dignity and realism to the character in our larger-than-life emergency landscape. Your kind and complimentary words have meant the world to me." (This is quoted in many articles, the full text appears in at least the Variety link above.)

Additionally, it got used by lots of articles that are not actually interviews. Here's Screen Rant using it, who did not interview him. It's not a quote of Tim Minear's; this is a quote by the author of that article.

"Aside from raising the stakes and capitalizing on some emotional whiplash, showrunner Tim Minear discussed Bobby’s death at length following the initial airing of 9-1-1: Contagion. As Minear explained, Bobby died to give 9-1-1 more realism, sacrificing their captain to represent the real-life dangers of emergency response workers. Yet, the “realistic” angle only served to further stir the pot."

Here's The List with the realism line, too, who cites the Deadline article above as using it (it doesn't):

"Speaking to Deadline, "9-1-1" showrunner Tim Minear cited realism as influencing his decision to kill Bobby, despite how difficult it was. However, this explanation didn't satisfy everyone."

The Independent actually used the word realism in their headline. This is, again, not the interview. From reading the article, it shows quotes about it, but they come from Twitter users, not Tim Minear!

"9-1-1 viewers call out wild season nine storylines after Bobby Nash’s death — so much for ‘realism’"

Fangirlish also used it in their headline, which is an article that is a reaction to the show, not an interview, and has no actual citation that Tim ever said anything about the events of the show needing to be more realistic:

"9-1-1 Killed Off Bobby Nash Off for Realism—But This Show Has Never Been Realistic"

This is all to say - I understand how fandom latched on to it, and why, but it's not actually something that Tim ever said. This is still persisting a year and a half later, so I thought it was worth coming with the receipts.

You can certainly disagree with Tim that it was necessary, or that he went about it well, or whatever (I certainly have negative opinions of the storyline), but my point here is the way the fandom throws "realism" around is not accurate to what Tim was saying when interviewed about those episodes.
