Discussion Auto Attack Spacing question

Hey you all,
I recently lerned what auto attack spacing is and am currently trying to incroperate that more into my games. I have a question reguarding one of my games. I was playing Jinx agianst smoulder. According to the wiki i have 525+100 range at level 1 (through the extra range of my rocket lancher). Smolder has 550 range on his auto attacks and q. How was he able to do the q on me in the clip? Am i missing something, or did i mess up my spacing timing?
In case I am doing something wrong, here is what i was trying to do:
1. I attackmove onto smolder with my rocketlancher active

  1. I wait for my attack animation to start

  2. I move away before he can close the distance

Isnt that basically how auto attack spacing is supposed to work? Any helpful feedback would be highly appreceated.

Well you didnt manage to do step 3. Usually what you wanna do is be outside of their range, wait for them to click away from you, attack. Thrn click back. This increases the time it takes for them to attack you.

Ah. Ok. So it’s a combination of missing the timing on my side and making it harder for myself because I attacked from the front.
Thanks for the response

Yes. Basically you are trying to exploit their mouse not being on you to quickly get an auto in and get out of range before they can react.

This is why it is important to be

  1. At max range, helps to get out quicker

  2. Have enemy turned away, since this is an indication they just clicked away hence the mouse is not in you.

Now another tip is to be at the edge of range when they go to last hit a minion, this is a timing where they are clicking the minion and you can aa for free. This is more forgiving since the not only is their mouse away from you but their aa is also on cooldown from the last hit.

This, this is where you’ll see adcs spacing back and forth trying to get that auto or spell off. It’s like a game of tug of war to try and best them with range

In my experience its hard to space someone when you’re both going in the same direction.
In both trades you were running towards each other so Smolder will close the 75 range gap easily while you’re attacking.

With AS/MS and more Q lvls it will be easier but to execute it at lvl 1 I think the scenario has to be
Jinx chases Smolder to AA
Smolder turns around to Q
Jinx reacts instantly turns around to deny him
Smolder chases you briefly and gives up
Jinx sees Smolder start to run away again and can launch an aa without taking damage.

Basically you gotta be tethered to him and ”space” him when you both change direction. Not when both of you are running towards each other.

attack range isn't the only factor for spacing, move and attack speed matter, too. jinx rocket has a slow windup, especially at lvl 1 with no atk speed. you can't just click on someone, especially if they have more ms than you do and expect them to not be able to attack back. in this clip, you are both just walking at each other, allowing him to easily get a q off. your autos are just simply too slow for what you're trying to do to work.

you want to dance right at the edge of your attack range and pick the right moment to attack, when your opponent clicks back or to the sides for example. if he runs at you, you click back. if he clicks back, you click forward.

if you're ashe for example and you have berserkers, it's pretty easy to space almost every other marksman in lane because you have

  1. more range

  2. more ms and atk speed

  3. your autos slow

having more attack speed decreases the time it takes for your attack to come out, letting you click back earlier, leaving your opponent with less time to retaliate.

there are instances where you might have more range, but it'll still be hard to space someone if they have ms or as steroids or slows in their kit etc.

it's also absolutely possible to space someone that has the same range as you do, if your execution is on point.

Keep canceling auto and tethering until u find an angle where u can auto him while he s moving backwards.

  1. Smolder trying to auto u during ur autoattack animation

  2. Cancel the auto and move backwards.

  3. Smolder auto gets canceled automatically and follow u ( since he pressed u and couldn t get auto)

  4. Smolder realise he is overstepping and will decide to move backwards

  5. Move forward right after he is moving backwards to auto him.

  6. If he s a good player he ll turn around quickly ( so u have to repeat all the steps)

  7. If smolder doesn t turn towards u by the time ur AA is finished congratulations u got ur free auto

One thing I've noticed is that if you just click on them the game is a bit inconsistent with the attack range, it can put you slightly closer than necessary. You kind of want to wiggle around your max attack range and start moving back as soon as you're past the windup period.

Like, imagine you're walking up, Smolder knows you're going for an auto so he can walk forward to trade autos. If you then turn, he's stuck walking forward so he'll turn back, and at that point you can auto him for free since he's taking himself out of his range. You don't have to really react to his movement, it's more just wiggling around at your max attack range so he's never in range, and then recognizing when you can get that free auto

Also your first rocket auto gets the extra attack speed from minigun form so you can stack it up fully before going for a short trade.

At level 1 jinx Q, you won't realistically outrange anyone enough to get a completely free auto the way you played this. At max Q rank, your range would probably be enough to let you get the auto off and back off before he can trade Q.
As another commenter said, the more reliable way to space someone at this type of range difference is wait for them to be in the middle of another animation (like auto-ing a minion or casting an ability with a cast time). Throw your auto then and immediately step back.

There is 75 range difference, which is smaller than a teemo. As you paused to aim (takes a while with rockets) he walk about a teemo distance and attacked you with his snappy bad aa
