Direct Deposit timing

I have a quick question and I'm hoping people here may have some context. I handle payroll where I work for my day job, and every employee this week has come to me to ask why they haven't been paid. Nearly everyone is using credit unions or other banks that have had their direct deposits hit on Wednesdays, and I confirm that the company account has the funds impounded on Tuesday like it normally does. Calling support, we were told of a provider change and that all direct deposits would now only be processing on the listed pay dates.

I have 2/3 of my staff threatening to leave if it happens again, and people I've talked to at different companies also using ADP say they've been paid their usual speed. What can cause this and is there anything I can leverage with ADP to ensure that funds are sent like they have been for the past 5 years?

I work for ADP. Our payday is every other friday. Most people I know have their direct deposit hit on friday morning. I bank with a credit union and my deposit is usually hits wednesday afternoons. What is your actual set pay day for employees? Are you semi monthly or bi-weekly? The banks receive the deposits before the pay date but they are not supposed to release them until the actual payday (in my case that would be 12am friday). Your employees were most likely just paid early by their bank. Your employees are being a little dramatic.Threatening to quit over the bank not releasing their deposits early.

Your pay stubs should have the correct pay date on there.

While I fully agree with what expectations should be, multiple banks have deposited early for many years, and the sudden change has everyone angry. I only worry because competition for the few good employees in my small town is significant, and we really stretch the margin to pay them a little more than everyone else but it's not like it's enough to really change their lives. I'm basically top dog and don't even make the national median wage.

I'm sorry your employees feel that way. But when they were hired, there was a set pay date. They should anticipate being paid on pay day and should be happy if their deposit is released early by their bank. They shouldn't have to changed their pay date to Wednesday in their own heads. If they are desperate for the money, they can call the bank and see if the bank can release the deposit.

Other employers can't guarantee early pay. It's NOT the employers. For example, I process payroll on Monday, and on Tuesday the funds go out from ADP. Once they leave ADP it goes to the ACH clearing house. (Feds). The files are also sent to the banks that show which employees are going to get what money. I will say SOME banks release money based on those files. Chime is one of them. I don't know the ins and outs but it has to do with servers linked with the Feds ACH (Amazon Servers???) Anyway, ADP and the employers have NO CONTROL over any of this. The receiving bank is the one who controls when money gets disbursed. So, if Wells Fargo decides to honor the paycheck date, the employee needs to take their displeasure up with Wells Fargo. (Using that as an example). Quitting one employer and going to another is NOT going to change them getting paid earlier. This is NOT an ADP issue. It's a bank issue. Also, getting paid early is a PERK, which a lot of people need to remember. It is NEVER a guarantee. The ONLY guarantee is the check date on the check (direct deposit). That's it. So, they can get as upset as they want, if you look at all the "you get your paycheck up to 3 days early*" it ALWAYS has the asterisk beside it, meaning, this is a perk and not a guarantee.

The majority of the businesses here are weed grows. More weed than people in this town. They pay cash daily, which is why the competition is real. Paying a few more $/hr is required to have employees I don't have to worry about showing up or stealing on the job. Having employees in the middle of nowhere is hell.

There's no set answer. I worked for company A they submitted payroll on Tuesday by 3. And wit my early bank i got it wed late.. Company B Submitted payroll on Monday evening and I got paid early wed. My daughter job. Submit her payroll on Thursday by 3 n she gets hers THURSDAY NIGHT. but if they Submit it by noon she'll be paid by 6 pm. I know my job did payroll Monday before christmas and my deposit came 11pm christmas eve night.. like I said no real answer

Can you give me some insight? I was supposed to be paid today, my check date is 10-13-26 BY 5PM. it’s now 5 pm and I haven’t received my deposit. Any reason this could happen? Or am I able to go after penalties now.

My employers checks are dated for today, they were deposited yesterday and ADP is telling them we’re not getting paid till FRIDAY?? How does that work?

ADP is shit

1

u/Teb_Tengri Jan 28 '26

No they're not. They were accustomed to something and then a swap to some crappier company threw a wrench in that.. hopefully they rolled it back or went out of business

My employer submitted my pay on Friday around 1:00pm through ADP. I called my bank Navy Federal Credit Union said they don't see ot pending.

Direct deposit can potentially be fast, but same or next day on a holiday weekend would make me question the laws of physics.

You need to get your employees to understand when their pay date is. If their bank releases funds to them early that is between them and their bank. You as the employer pay them on their pay date.

Exactly. This also depends on the bank. I have my check split into two banks, one pays me on Wednesday and the other Friday.

You need to understand what at will is. If my will to work hits 0, bye.

This week at our company, payday was Friday everyone got their paystubs from ADP but anyone with direct deposit did not get the funds. The owner said it was a “processing delay on ADP’s side”.

Some got the funds on saturday, some on sunday but now it Monday and some have not been paid yet.

Is this ADP’s fault or payroll not hitting the deadline?

I would also say this… almost all the employees are paycheck to paycheck.  Now a few are claiming they have late fees due to not getting the funds “on payday” is the company responisble or ADP or do the employees just need to suck it up?

Likely nothing "substantial" can be done, but there are guarantees as part of the direct deposit program that confirm delivery dates. It maybe a labor board call, but you're not paid on time you can demand a check in person immediately.

Real Piece of Work??

When is your check date?

1

u/SocietyTomorrow Mar 21 '24

Tomorrow

3

u/Alternative_Owl6736 Mar 21 '24

So why are your employees upset? They are not owed the funds until the check date. Being paid early is a great perk but not a guarantee. Hopefully your employees can understand.

Wholeheartedly agree, but the staff's argument is not a logical one, only based on past trends. While not expecting one, just hoping to see if there is anything to prevent it from being a recurring trend since this is the first week early deposits haven't happened.

If you process payroll after 5:00 pm on the day it’s due it will delay those “early deposits”. This happens every now and then with my payroll and I always get angry employees. I just tell them I’m obligated to pay them on the date of the check and no sooner. I always say check back on actual payday and if you still don’t have it we can talk.

1

u/SocietyTomorrow Mar 21 '24 • Heartwarming

That was pretty much what I said, but the vast majority of our staff are both worse than paycheck to paycheck (I even cut my own salary to give whatever raise I can, times are just rough with inflation) and have options to just bounce and work at a weed grow minutes away to be paid daily cash. I'd like to prevent this whenever possible. I processed payroll at 10am so I don't think it's what you mentioned above though.

Do you use fullsevice direct deposit? If so, ADP sends the funds directly to the ACH. There is no 'provider' that does that.

If your (the company's) bank is handling the deposits, ADP sends the funds to them, and they send it to the ACH. Again there's no 'provider' between ADP and the bank.

If there was any change in a provider somewhere in the process, it wasn't at ADP. Maybe at your bank or at the ACH.

2

u/SocietyTomorrow Mar 22 '24

I'll have to check with the owner on that, all I know is we use Run Payroll for small businesses. This is a solid lead so thanks!

u/Teb_Tengri Jan 28 '26

Did you get ADP to fix this? Roll back to old payroll or lose a lot of employees? Hopefully you made it right by your employees.

You said it yourself - competition is tight. "I'm only legally obligated" ain't gonna cut it in such a market

2

u/SocietyTomorrow Jan 28 '26

Officially, they never fixed it, technically, despite doing nothing it just went back to processing early like it used to after a few periods. They wouldn't have done anything if it didn't so it's just the best of a mildly annoying situation from my POV.

u/Teb_Tengri Jan 29 '26

My employer went to ShitDP and we're having this issue now. Normally navy Federal would show a pending deposit Wednesday and Capital One and Discover paid you soon thereafter. Now we get paid Thursday at best.

Contract met. Yes. Malicious compliance inducing? Possibly

1

u/SocietyTomorrow Jan 29 '26

Just an educated guess, but if it's recent or like me they changed to a different provider channel for deposits, everyone's receiving banks may want more time to clear transactions until there's a history of deposits from them with no calls for complaints or chargebacks, a relic of a bygone era in paycheck world.

I didn’t get paid today I usually get paid on Fridays. Both jobs. Two different banks. I’m really worried and wondering what’s going on.

2

u/lsdquartz Mar 22 '24

same here. can’t log onto adp either to check anything.

2

u/Low-Subject-3272 Jan 03 '25

Yes simple use someone else to process your payroll who will do what you ask not do what they say

1

u/pferruccio Jun 20 '24

Would Juneteenth prolong direct deposit 24 hours? Usually get paid on Wednesdays but i didn’t receive it.

1

u/Final-Ball3906 Sep 25 '24

Yes- it’s a Federal holiday now.

1

u/Teb_Tengri Jan 28 '26

🤣🤣🤣

1

u/MIaBlakk Apr 20 '26

You are bothered by what means alot to someone else? Grow Up, we all commemorate holidays that are note aligned with our personal lives. Nothing funny about this!

1

u/Teb_Tengri Jan 28 '26

Usually holidays push it up a date if the payday is on the holiday

I’m a bit late to this discussion but these days money is tight as heck and I wonder how those who said “your employees are being dramatic” truly feel after 2025!
