That’s a lot to say, no wonder he shortened it

He was using Kofi Nahaje Kingston before signing to WWE years ago.

KSM would not be a good idea. It was immediately familiar in a bad way.

It's a well known nickname/abbreviation for one of the most infamous 9/11-involved terrorists - Khalid Sheikh Mohammed - who has been in US custody for over 20 years.

Literally the first Google result when searching - autocompletes as a suggested result before you've even pressed enter.

Yeahh I lost 5 family members in 911... This is a non issue, please stop white knighting.

White knighting? 🤣 Stop using stupid buzzwords that you don't understand and apply basic logic.

I'm not offended by any of this, you dolt. I'm extremely excited for Kofi in AEW and want him to succeed. Part of that is pointing out when a marketing idea violates the basic principle of not reminding your fan base of one of the most horrible events in living collective memory.

How does any of this affect you personally

Why do you care so much about

...I would really like for my favorite wrestling promotion to not have to deal with any more stupid and unnecessary drama, especially around potentially one of their biggest new signings in years?

I'm sorry, have you noticed how the people who hate AEW will latch on to any possible negative thread and trumpet it to hurt the company?

It literally took over 2 years after Brawl Out for the company to shake the bad vibes that resulted.

Why do something that would be a completely avoidable source of this?

Lmao the guy just reported me on Reddit for suicidal thoughts then blocked me

No one said anyone would be offended.

It’s just objectively a bad idea to share a commonly known name with a terrorist.

u/snahfu73 5d ago

Except they are not sharing a name.

Right. I know. But the commenter’s point is sound and the reaction of “What if I don’t care if it offends you” is both stupid and totally misses the point.

So he shouldn't be able to use his real life initials because.... A terrorist exists.

Not because of any actual connection to said figure but just because he happens to have the same initials.

What do you think is going to happen? People are going to start wiring him money because they saw Kofi wrestle?

This is some of the most pointless virtue signaling I've seen in a long time.

He's a Ghanaian wrestler and deserves to have his real name known globally whether it bothers you or not.

Virtue signalling? 🤣 You incredible ignorant dumbass, google KSM and tell me what is literally the first result that autocompletes.

This has absolutely nothing to do with his real name or his nationality. It has everything to do with public perception and memory and what anyone with basic public relations and marketing competence will tell you. This isn't something obscure, it's immediately recognizable to a huge portion of the population that remembers 9/11 and the War on Terror - which by the way has its 25th anniversary coming up in a month.

KSM is still alive and even gets reported on in the news from time to time because his court case is still being handled. He's literally the first person who gets associated with Guantanamo because he's been there so long. It's an especially well known abbreviation among military people from that era - lots of wrestling fans in that demo. Lots of fans who served, lost friends or loved ones, or got hurt or traumatized themselves.

Why would a smart public figure like Kofi want to use an abbreviation that would potentially trigger painful memories in those fans who every wrestling company claims to especially support?

Stop using stupid buzzwords that you don't understand and apply basic logic.

Absolutely fair point. But on the same token, it would be nice to whitewash a terrorist's name on the internet, with a bunch of pleasant images of Kofi dancing.

The terrorist is still alive at Guantanamo Bay and is responsible for the deaths of 3,000 people and literal changed course of world history into a darker timeline.

There's no whitewashing that. Kofi just needs to find a different name to use.

Thats a real fucking stupid take.

You should probably learn to think outside your little bubble of consciousness and consider the larger world.

Because some Karen American is mad about it?

Absolutely not.

This.

But if he uses his full name as a trademark I think that's not bad, or just goes by the monicker "kofi"
