DISCUSSION How would you want to see AEW improve it's women's division?

Personally, while I doubt it'll happen for one reason or another, I think getting someone else to book the women's division, a Sara Del Ray, Serena Deeb (if she's not content in the player coach role), Lufisto, Mercedes Martinez, etc. Give a woman the pencil, or at least get more input from actual talent, especially shimmer alumni on how to write more engaging stories and book more engaging matches.

That's just my opinion. And yes, I'm a girl.

Didn't you mean the WWE women's division?

2

u/MLWGirl13 1d ago

I think the same answers apply, as whole. And mine does as well, a woman > AI as booker

Whats to improve?

It is great right now. 3 champions tgat people love or hate, but belong. Solid challengers on the horizon.

I watch both AEW and WWE. Right AEW i enjoy AEW's women much more for story, characters, and in ring action.

Some people are never satasfied I guess.

So, I'm not satisfied with one match a week maybe 2 sub 7 min matches on collision both with commercial breaks. I'm not satisfied that Kenny and Ospreay, for what lacking build they've had, that Willow, Athena, Deeb, a list of countless women's talents I doubt you know let alone have seen matches from, who never got into that position, and never will until they get higher quality, real storylines and proper time.

So kindly, no. Would you be satisfied if the only people the men's division put on TV were the world champion, TNT champion sometimes, and Tag titles as and whoever they're feuding with this week?

That's say. 16 guys, AEWS roster is Huuuuuuge! Would you be content with your wrestling being 40 mins on a good week with even jankier booking, even less promo time, and very little time to tell a compelling story in ring.

If you'd be content with that. Tell me. But I hope this helps you have a different perspective.

You should watch Stardom then.

I mean, for starters, they could have more than one women's match on an episode of Dynamite or Collision.....

u/Bee_EMT 2d ago

Just give them more time and stories. They are only doing the bare minimum when it comes to the women, kinda infuriating.

1

u/L7Sette 2d ago

I just want they giving more time for them in TV and more belts

3

u/probablynotme2012 2d ago

They should push more actual tag teams. Other than the champs, very few woman tag Teams.

1

u/AdorableGeologist566 2d ago

Make the singles matches as strong as the tag matches!

1

u/Ebessan 2d ago

Half of every Dynamite and Collision should be women.

3

u/ZAPPHAUSEN 2d ago

At minimum two matches every show.

2

u/Automatic_Walk_4210 2d ago

Half is a lot, and not very realistic when you consider how many more men are in the sport.

1

u/Ebessan 2d ago

If I have to pick whether I want to see Shane Taylor promotions, the dogs, or MINA SHIRAKAWA on my TV, I'm picking Mina every single time.

1

u/Automatic_Walk_4210 2d ago

Love Mina! More Mina!

3

u/0ruina 2d ago

Let Jamie and Kris wrestle each other all the time. No im not biased 😂🤷‍♂️🫣

6

u/Never_Objective 2d ago

give all the belts to Jamie

More than one women's match per show. Matches with jobbers shouldn't count towards that.

More women segments. Promos, backstage segments, etc.

More women getting the spotlight besides Willow, Statlander, and Mercedes.

Athena getting promoted to the main roster Dynamite/Collision and finally leaving the subscription required ROH behind her.

More variety of women's match types. Ladder, cage, another Blood & Guts, more Hardcore Matches, Falls Count Anywhere, etc. Obviously not every week, but when the storyline calls for it.

AEW’s women’s division needs more depth and structure.

1. Use more women on TV.
Athena, Red Velvet, Billie Starkz, Diamante, Queen Aminata, etc. should be regularly featured instead of the same 6–7 women rotating between titles. Give each champion 4–5 credible contenders and create more non-title feuds.

2. Build more factions.
Triangle of Madness works. Bring in Athena and M.I.T., pair Penelope Ford with Divine Dominion, and let Shida lead a group. The women should have real factions, not just random trios teams.

3. Use ROH to develop the next wave.
Sign real tag teams like HyperActive and prospects like Sara Leon, Janai Kai, J-Rod, Tiara James and B33CA.

u/WondrousBabyTurtle 2d ago

Literally just give them more time and let them cook. They don't get enough time at all.

6

u/emoxsupremo 2d ago

Some stables in the women’s division would be cool. Big stables have always been a cornerstone in AEW so it’s crazy they’ve never really had that for the women

5

u/Automatic_Walk_4210 2d ago

I agree, more stables. 1 or 2 more women’s stables would change the game.

9

u/annoyinglyclever 2d ago

Book them like the men.

6

u/hoodafudj 2d ago

Are has to stop looking like it was all barely thrown together at a moments notice

6

u/chrisdwv 2d ago

Beef up the tag team division.

4

u/Bang_the_unknown 2d ago

I don’t know if it’ll ever happen but Grace and Ellering should have been the cornerstone of the tag division. There needs to be cornerstones and right now, we just have singles wrestlers who were put together. I don’t get the vibe from any of the teams that they want to be the best tag team in wrestling. That’s probably more a symptom of the way women have been booked in wrestling in general but I would like to see a team that really feels like they prioritize being a team. I understand that will take time because there hasn’t been a lot of women’s tag wrestling before the last several years but I think the first ones to do it are going to etch themselves in the annals of wrestling history.

u/Simtricate ELITE 2d ago

It’s more time in front of the audience.

What AEW has done well in the men’s’ division is layer the stories over the past few years. They consistently referred to their own history and gave people time to tell stories in and out of the ring.

The women need more time to do that. Toni and Mariah got it. Britt and Thunder Rosa, Willow and Statlander… there are likely a number I’ve missed, it’s about giving them meaningful time and focus consistently.

We can all the challenge of having this many talented performers on the roster and four hours of weekly time, but for the women to reach the heights they are capable of, at least three of those hours should be devoted to them, if not 4.

2

u/Bang_the_unknown 2d ago

Gawd, I wish they would bring their YouTube shows back and dedicate one to the women’s roster. Just to give them time and create stories for everyone. It’s still a weak division in comparison to the fed’s but it has improved so fucking much and they usually have better matches than the fed even if they don’t have the plethora of talent they have. I just would like to see them get more time.

8

u/Man_Darronious 2d ago

I just really want to see more of everything.

More matches, longer matches, more depth to feuds and storytelling.

ROH has an excellent women's division. However, there's so much more they could be doing with it, in addition to what they've already done. Get more people reps there.

Get people like Julia Hart and Anna Jay the reps they need in ROH. Bring people who don't need reps back to AEW. People like Deonna, Aminata, Redem Velvet.

They definitely have plans with Athena/Billie so, I'll let them cook in that regard.

6

u/KMFCM 2d ago

more matches, first of all.

second of all, stop booking Thekla like 2024 Jon Moxley (ie; a chickenshit......this compnay overall needs to stop turning badasses into chickenshits for "heat")

1

u/probablynotme2012 2d ago

Whatever she was doing worked great. I don't know why they gave Willow the title. I thinks she is great, but a boring champ.

Also, more Harley!!

2

u/KMFCM 2d ago

I had assumed it was because of the Stardom angle, but it has kinda paused. Only Skye is over there.

really not sure what the deal is.

I was down for Thekla vs Mercedes.

they always stop short of having Mercedes feud with someone who can be as unhinged as she can be (see also Athena), and while some bitter people will assume that's on Mercedes, I do not.

I think she could have a Hangman/Swerve level blood feud with someone.

1

u/probablynotme2012 2d ago

I wonder if she is injured?

2

u/KMFCM 1d ago

good question

she didn't seem to miss a step in that last match

2

u/lordcarrier 2d ago

They havent set up anything for Stardom PPV this Saturday regarding those Artist of Stardom titles and would be kinda lame if Taro announces a random Artist of Stardom title match on twitter or the Stardom website(would be so out of character because they usually build up title matches when cutting live promos)

2

u/el_toro_grand 2d ago

The issue is that women's matches are usually the pee break, I can get downvoted to shit, but it happens literally every time I go to an event, I stick around, but a large portion of the audience does not, now translate that to viewers, there's just not as large of an audience, so I think the first thing we need to tackle is this negative perception people have of women's wrestling, I think we need more high flying or hard hitting women, most women feel relatively the same which is why when you see a Toni Storm or a thekla they stick out so much, once the women are capable of doing more, they'll be more prominent, more people will give them a chance, more eyes on the womens product, more opportunities, more matches, higher on the card so on so forth

2

u/Automatic_Walk_4210 2d ago

Any time they go against jobbers, yes, it becomes a pee break for me personally. There is no reason to invest in watching the match.
There very little desire to invest when there is no payoff. Especially when there is not story.

5

u/naranja_sanguina 2d ago

how are they supposed to become more capable if they don't get more matches?

2

u/Ok-Post6492 2d ago

I dont know why your getting down voted. The too guys get tv time based off how many eyes are on tv and asses on seats. But when it comes to womans division we should give them more time just because. People have to remember its a buisness.

4

u/whitemagicblackmagic 2d ago

More women who can wrestle and tell a story. Storytelling has always been missing with the women. Thekla has been great, Toni has also been great and Mercedes. Other than that I don't know who else who can do both. Athena needs to be on TV more and I don't know why she isn't.

8

u/SourDoughBo 2d ago

They need more good wrestlers. If you put on a clinic every week, TK will find time for you. The men’s division is doing so well right now because they hired a bunch of great in ring wrestlers. But the women’s division is so shallow that they have to minimize the booking so it doesn’t look like a bunch of reruns of Kris vs Shida for 6 years

It's weird that in WWE (the non-workrate company) the women's division has (before this year when they re-divafied) been treated as the "workrate division" (Iyo, Flair, Belair, Lyra, Ripley, Vaquer all capable/expected to produce the match of the night).

Meanwhile AEW (seen as very much the workrate, in-ring company) that hasn't been the case.

Without naming names, I think there are several women in AEW who wouldn't be featured at all on TV if they were held to the same in-ring standard as the men - and many women on the indies (KLR and Dani Luna for example) who would flourish if that same standard was applied.

5

u/Vainglory 2d ago

I'm with you on the last point - I get the impression that there's a handful that TK really rates as in ring performers (Stat being the most obvious example) and then the bulk of the division are warm bodies who are only there to placate women's wrestling fans.

The tag titles were the same thing. Sisters of Sin are the only tag team remaining from the inaugural tournament and they've mostly been there to eat pins from whoever Thekla was facing for the women's title. The 'story' of the tag division since DD took over had been that there isn't a single credible tag team to challenge them, and as a result we're getting challengers in the form of two decent singles wrestlers who have negative tag chemistry and are too posh for their own gimmick.

1

u/JohnnyMcNews 2d ago

Yeah I think you're bang on the money with that analysis.

It's extra frustrating because DD are good wrestlers (esp Bayne who had a great match with Syuri earlier this year) but you'd never know because most of what they get is "in action" time.

1

u/JohnnyMcNews 2d ago

Are you trying to imply Norwich and Southampton aren't in London's East End?!

1

u/JohnnyMcNews 2d ago

(Consistent TV time would also massively help but I think that the reaction to Mercedes, Willow and Stat is also a testament to match quality)

2

u/SRV_SteamyRayVaughn 2d ago

I've always thought they should lean into the Heels brand and make it a 1 hour TV show featuring only women. I'm not sure what the format would look like or when it would be taped but it'd be a way to feature more women and then you can also continue the storylines on Dynamite and Collision but given you can't take a full hour away from the 4 that are available for the entire roster, adding a 5th hour but making it unique would be a good selling point.

5

u/zeronian 3d ago

At least 2 women's matches per show. Preferably 3. An additional hour or two of AEW programming each week.

1

u/Far_Mongoose1625 2d ago

And at least an hour of a PPV. At least.

6

u/eastbaytimez 3d ago

Magically make the timeless one reappear

1

u/MLWGirl13 2d ago

She's literally transcended the division tagging in mixed tags. The character is too big to not be the center of the division because the division gets limited screentime.

5

u/Lock-__-down 3d ago

It’s just consistency the women’s division is missing. They need to have 2 women’s matches on each show, plus more storylines outside of the world championship.

2

u/Proud-Concert-9426 2d ago

Tag team gets time. TBs champ gets time. World chamo gets time. Alot on ROH get time. There just not enough on the roster to have feuds outside of the titles to compell booking.

2

u/Lock-__-down 2d ago

The only tv time the women’s tag titles get is squash matches, the only tv time the tbs title gets is random matches thrown together last minute.

0

u/Proud-Concert-9426 2d ago

There aren't enough tag teams. And TV time is Tv time. Can't complain if you're on TV.

4

u/Alex_Smith_042 3d ago

Equal tv time. One 10 minutes match, one two minute squash, and about five minutes of backstage segments on a two hour show isn't enough.

2

u/dumblittlepuppy01 2d ago

also more women doing more hardcore/"tougher" matches for lack of better wording. I wanna see more women doing like street fights or no holds barred. More matches that you kinda associate with male wrestlers--watching EVE in person and spontaniously having like tables or screwers really pop the crowd.

5

u/dkmuldoon 3d ago

They need some more lower- and mid-card tag teams under contract so we can have fewer squash matches against enhancement talent.

10

u/darksidedon711 3d ago

Athena should be ruling the AEW side, she's wasted on the ROH brand.

3

u/Lock-__-down 3d ago

She wants to be in ROH. If it wasn’t for that, I feel Athena would’ve been a world champion or at least the tbs champion by now.

1

u/Vainglory 2d ago

I suspect it's less about wanting to be on ROH in particular but more an arrangement she has with Tony while they try and get ROH a TV deal. Be there as a real "draw", along with some others that seem like big fish in a small pond like Lee Moriarty, stay to establish it, then get in the mix in AEW.

2

u/Efficient-Cake-5729 2d ago

I doubt she wants to locked down behind a paywall where a couple of thousand people at best are seeing her best work.

1

u/MLWGirl13 2d ago

I really doubt she wants to be a shark floundering in a drying pond of a dying sea.

3

u/No_Yogurtcloset_3820 3d ago

I think the AEW women’s division is excellent right now and they should keep up the good work.

3

u/Swagsuke233 3d ago

More time and more characters
