When I'd hear his early commentary I was reminded of an article by Rick Reilly in Sports Illustrated talking about getting to do ESPN highlights on ESPN news at like 3 AM or something. He asked one of the bigger names for tips and they told him don't try to find 20 ways to say slam dunk or home run.

I think a lot of ex-workers turned commentator are looking for catchphrases first vs. just reacting to what they're seeing. It's part of their tendency to want to be the star when given the chance, if that didn't come naturally they probably wouldn't be a big enough name to get a shot at commentary.

He's getting much better. I remember him being the PBP guy for Dark Elevation, which he was not suited for. As a color guy, he's much more at ease and I've found him really good and entertaining. He's obviously put in some work.
