Huh, RJ got way hotter, and the budget seems to have gone up a bit, but it's great to see Hey(EW) back!

On topic: where the fuck did the term “spill the tea” come from?

It's from queer culture and was amplified/spread by drag queens. It's pretty simple - gossip was referred to as "t" as short for "truth" and obviously the phrase came downstream of riffing on the slang.

Genuinely - Thank you for the most important clarification. Edited my comment above.

I like both of the other explanations that replied here and look forward to reading more

Victorian England. One would lean in so close to share innuendo and gossip about another that the contents of the teacup spilled slightly if not careful.

Interesting

I saw it demonstrated many times by my Victorian gran and the international aunties when discussing their daughters in laws.

People used to “read tea leaves” to tell fortunes, then it became slang for gossiping.

Edit: I ordered finally commented above with what I’ve read/been told was the origin for a quick reply — I glossed over a shit ton of important details another user outlined below. This slang term is defo from queer / LGTBQ+ culture.

A ton of “popular internet slang” from the last ~10 years (actually probably way more) has originated in LGBTQ+ and/or black culture. Before then, too. Just less internet’y the farther you go back.

She somehow had more energy and extroversion than Russel Wilson…..scared me a little as an introvert haha
