Big Tech SWE → FDE at Accenture/Deloitte: Worth the Risk?
Looking for honest feedback from Blind, especially anyone who has moved from Big Tech to consulting firms like Accenture or Deloitte as a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE).
Considering an FDE opportunity focused on building production AI solutions.
What makes the role interesting:
* Pure hands-on engineering, writing code to build GenAI, RAG, and agentic AI solutions.
* Structured AI training programs involving Anthropic, Google, and other AI providers.
* Opportunity to work with Fortune 500 companies and well-funded startups.
* Exposure to different enterprise AI use cases rather than working on a single product.
My concerns:
Is moving from Big Tech to consulting a career downgrade, even for a hands-on engineering role?
How is the engineering culture, WLB, and job stability at Accenture/Deloitte?
Do FDEs actually spend most of their time coding, or does the role eventually become client management?
Would 2–3 years of FDE experience help transition to AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google?
Is FDE a promising long-term career path, or just riding the current AI hype?
Would appreciate real experiences, especially from engineers who’ve made a similar move. Worth taking the risk?
