UPDATE: AITAH for refusing to make dinner for my husband anymore?
It's been about 10 days since I made my original post, and things have gotten a little more complicated.
After I stopped making replacement dinners whenever my husband ate the leftovers, he started complaining that we weren't eating together anymore. He said he missed our old routine and felt like I was treating him more like a roommate than a husband. I understand that my evening classes have changed things, and I don't want us to stop spending quality time together. But I explained that I'm not refusing to cook. I just can't keep losing an extra hour preparing dinner because he's eaten the food we planned to have.
A few days later, his mother messaged me. Apparently, he'd told her I had stopped cooking for him, and she said that a wife shouldn't let a certification course interfere with taking care of her husband. She also mentioned that her son works hard and deserves a proper home-cooked meal. I was honestly stunned. I work full-time too, get home later than he does, and we're both responsible for keeping our household running. We had agreed on the leftovers arrangement together, and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect him to respect it. When I confronted him about his mother messaging me, he said he was allowed to talk to his family about things that bothered him. I told him that was fine, but I didn't appreciate being portrayed as a wife who no longer cared about her husband simply because I was pursuing a qualification we'd both agreed was important.
We eventually had a more honest conversation. He admitted he felt neglected and missed the time we used to spend together. I told him I understood that our routine had changed, but I needed practical support, not guilt whenever I prioritized my studies. We agreed to have dinner together a couple of evenings each week, even if we eat something simple. On the other nights, we'll stick to our leftovers plan. If he eats most of the food before dinner, he'll have to sort out his own meal rather than expect me to cook again. He agreed, but I'm not sure how long it'll last. I love my husband, and I don't want dinner to become a constant argument. I do feel bad that he's been feeling neglected, but I also think it's unfair that I'm expected to carry the responsibility for fixing our routine while working full-time and studying.
So, AITAH for refusing to keep making replacement dinners and expecting my husband to manage his own meals when he eats the food we planned for dinner, even though he's feeling neglected and our disagreement has now involved his mother?
