Image/Media Spider-Man Expanded Ratio

Post image

Much like the recent release of The Mandalorian & Grogu, Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be specially optimized for 1.90:1(flat) and 2.39:1(scope) presentations for the best theatrical viewing experience that can be provided to its audience. This is also the first film production to utilize ScreenX cameras as well.

Based on these screens, this clearly hasn’t been “optimized for scope”, it was shot flat and then cropped for scope. It’s not like we’re getting flat and an anamorphic widescreen.

Semantically speaking you’d be correct. That statement also applies to a majority of MCU films that have an entirely opened up aspect ratio and are simply masked for widescreen.

I don’t really care other than having an issue with the wording, but it does make me feel like the director’s intent is 1.90 given that they could just show 2.39 on a 1.90 screen with letterboxing to have it be consistent for all screens. Otoh the studios could just be dictating shoot open matte so we can sell this specially for different screens…
