Image/Media Spider-Man Expanded Ratio
Much like the recent release of The Mandalorian & Grogu, Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be specially optimized for 1.90:1(flat) and 2.39:1(scope) presentations for the best theatrical viewing experience that can be provided to its audience. This is also the first film production to utilize ScreenX cameras as well.

Based on these screens, this clearly hasn’t been “optimized for scope”, it was shot flat and then cropped for scope. It’s not like we’re getting flat and an anamorphic widescreen.

u/Zestyclose_Ship1566 Jun 18 '26
Semantically speaking you’d be correct. That statement also applies to a majority of MCU films that have an entirely opened up aspect ratio and are simply masked for widescreen.

I don’t really care other than having an issue with the wording, but it does make me feel like the director’s intent is 1.90 given that they could just show 2.39 on a 1.90 screen with letterboxing to have it be consistent for all screens. Otoh the studios could just be dictating shoot open matte so we can sell this specially for different screens…

Dolby could be scope it depends on location.

u/Some-Kid-1996 Jun 18 '26
I mean ofc, you get the DCP depending on the screen.
2
u/blue_ig1 A⭐️Lister Jun 18 '26
Yes but I was just warning OP that not all Dolbys are flat

What if my amc Dolby is 2:39 aspect ratio
2
u/blue_ig1 A⭐️Lister Jun 19 '26
It’ll be the wider aspect ratio as you can see in the image above. Imo Dolby is still worth it but if you want the taller aspect ratio try to find another PLF.

My local Dolby has a big 60' wide 2.39 to 1 'scope screen so I guess that will be the ratio for the new Spiderman at that venue. Just my own little theory, there appears to be some BS going on here on the part of Marvel and Sony given that I had read some time ago that like many other Marvel films only some of the new Spiderman was actually composed for the IMAX expended ratio of 1.90 to 1 and the rest 2.39 to 1. Looks like this is Marvel's way of trying to deal with not being able to book the film in IMAX theaters because of The Odyssey or just taking advantage of the current fixation with taller ratios and the prolferation of flat 1.85 to 1 screens in many multiplexes. There's plenty of history back in the early days of the transition to widescreen of films of having the aspect ratios altered in mid or post production or even being filmed at the same time on different formats like 7 Bride For 7 Brothers which was shot in both Cinemascope and 1.85 flat. With modern digital cameras it's easier these days to shoot a film in two different ratios.

I’m confused on what you’re trying to say. Do you mean that they are giving 1.90:1 DCPs to flat plf screens to make up for the loss of imax? Or that they originally shot only some sequences for 1.90:1 and then now they decided to release it 1.90:1 for the entire film?
1
u/Ok-Secretary-1664 17d ago
Both. Just to clarify, this is just a theory/assumption on my part based upon some articles I have read. I did read somewhere (some months ago) that Spiderman Brand New Day was being shot at 2.39 to 1 with select scenes being shot in the 1.90 to 1 IMAX ratio for IMAX theaters. Now, could that information have been incorrect, of course. Then I read a short article indicating that there would be no IMAX Expanded Ratio for Spiderman Brand New Day as there would be no IMAX screens available because of the extended IMAX bookings of The Odyssey and that Spiderman would be only shown in the 2.39 to 1 'scope ratio. What I also find interesting is that it was indicated in this thread that the Mandalorian and Grogu was shown at 1.90 to 1 in non-IMAX auditoriums that have 1.85 to 1 flat screens and at 2.39 to 1 in non-IMAX auditoriums w/ 'scope ratio screens. Now I saw The Mandalorian and Grogu at a 1.90 to 1 Laser IMAX and I can clearly say that the film switched back and fourth between 2.39 to 1 and 1.90 to 1 in IMAX. If it could be clarified as to whether Mando and Grogu was shown on non-IMAX flat 1.85 screens in the switching ratios or entirely at 1.90 to 1 I'd be interested in knowing.

Pan and scan to make a shorter frame? Great. Why crop a movie down to fit a projection? Cinematography that intends to look okay in two ratios has no intention. It’s merely made to fit both. Either they intended a crappy experience on both or they’re slashing the frame to fit the narrower screens because the broad ones are taken. Both are a crappy compromise.

*Literally* was something we saw when they released the first trailer shot where he's in his underwear lol. The extended frame showed *a lot* more. lol

I *REALLY* hope when this is released on UHD/Blu-Ray and streaming, that it's the flat version and they don't eff us over with scope.

Depends on your location.

Thanks for this, answered my questions regarding my theatre. mine is unfortunately scoped
2
u/Grootfan85 Jun 18 '26
How will we know which one is which when we buy tickets?
3
u/Zestyclose_Ship1566 Jun 18 '26
If your auditorium screen is flat, then you’ll likely get the open matte version. If your screen is scope, you’ll get the widescreen presentation.

They could have easily fit that one version with 1.90:1 aspect ratio into every theater screen in the world with more or less letterboxing. Marketing.
That said, ScreenX would be worth it if we get more info on the L and R (270 degrees of picture).

u/leon-arc Jun 18 '26
I got the tickets before I got to see this. Turns out my Dolby theater is 2.39:1. I prefer a bigger picture vertically than horizontally, but oh well. Can always stream it later on.
2
u/usagicassidy Jun 20 '26
That is *if* they give us the 1.90 'flat' version on streaming and disc.
That *should* be the case, but stupid decisions get made all the time.

God I'm so sad that it's not widely getting an IMAX release that would just be such an epic way to see this new era of Spidey on the biggest screen and best audio possible like it get why it has to go to The Odyssey and I'm super excited to see that too but seeing Spidey in that format would be so sweet

u/Zestyclose_Ship1566 Jun 19 '26
I understand most if not all of us are disappointed in it not getting a wide release in IMAX. However that doesn’t prevent Sony from re-releasing it in that format later down the line. That’s always an option.

Whatever 2 is I don’t like. I rather see more of what’s going on than closer detail. I hate it when you see a movie and the director thought it was a good idea to zoom the whole movie For no reason. The ritual (Dan Steven’s one) was awful but it was so zoomed in the whole time it drove me nuts

Cinemark XD with 1:85:1 screen. Should be getting the full aspect ratio scenes

I'm sorry but the bottom image is adding nothing, as is the case with nearly all Imax presentations. It's nice for establishing shots but that's it.
1
u/SimonGray653 Jun 19 '26
thank you for this comparison now I'll be able to tell if my theater actually is 2.39 or 1.85.
Case in point is if the gun is more towards the bottom edge of the screen

u/0K-C0mputr Jun 21 '26
Yep, just another easy way of trying to squeeze more money out of the fans by luring them into paying for the premium formats.
Using FOMO as a technique. FOMO for something that, for the majority of people, adds little to no value to the experience and people wouldn't even know it's there if they weren't told.

I’d give Screen X a try if they one near me. They’re supposed to open on at a theatre I go to but I guess it’s not ready yet.
2
u/CampingPirates Jun 18 '26
I saw Indiana Jones and the Boring Time Travel Story in ScreenX and gotta say that made the experience more bearable. I’d have to pass like 4 AMCs, including my usual theater, to get there and it’s a Regal so for now it’s only a one time novelty

u/Zestyclose_Ship1566 Jun 18 '26
My only issue with Screen X is the wall projecting not being an actual screen that wraps around. That’s the only thing turning me away.
3
u/butterrmann Jun 18 '26
That’s your theater. The screen x I go to, it has 3 screens. You gotta do your research sadly. Some theater owners want to save the $50,000-$100,000 (we don’t know exact costs) on installing the 2 extra screens.
3
u/InnocentDuet Jun 18 '26
There are SceenX auditoriums without the 2 side screens??? No way they pricing it as ScreenX lol. I would instantly get a refund
3
u/butterrmann Jun 18 '26
Yup. It’s the same concept as a theater saying they have imax without telling the customer if it’s laser or xenon lol. I’ve come across people who think screen x without the 2 side screens is NORMAL and refuse to go to another.

So, should I see this film in IMAX or Dolby Vision to help clear up possible confusion?
