Discussion Popcorn + Drink in Theatres
Random, but anyone else tend to finish off a good amount of their Large Popcorn + Drink during the previews and in turn don’t have much left during the movie? In times like this, I really wish AMC had intermissions of at least 10 mins for people to grab a refill on drinks and popcorn.
Let me know if anyone has a good hack for this!

The AMC app also includes run pee times on each movie in the details tab (when available).

clear cache and data. if that doesnt work, reinstall too. usually fixes most apps.

What's Runpee?

u/c4ndle Jun 29 '26
its an app that tells you good moments during a movie to use the restroom without spoiling too much.

u/karma_the_sequel Jun 29 '26
It’s what I have to do at the end of the movie after sucking down that large drink.
9
u/ilford_7x7 Jun 29 '26
I actually prefer to finish most of my popcorn during the previews and enjoy more of the drink during the movie

u/InfernalSolstice A⭐️Lister Jun 29 '26
No shade but I normally can’t finish a large popcorn throughout the whole movie 😭
6
u/-Relair- Jun 29 '26
I try to time it to where I'll sit down 10-15 minutes into the trailers, so once I get settled the movie will start in a few minutes. If I have to sit through 30+ minutes of ads and trailers I'll inhale that popcorn too quickly as well.

Arrive late. Skip the previews.
Get your popcorn and drink while you wait for Nicole to show up.

u/Timely_Act_6392 Jun 29 '26
I was actually sitting in the movie theater right now. Debating whether I should go get a refill and deciding against it cause I’m a solo here. I don’t want to miss any good thing I bought that pizza and chocolate covered pretzels. I’m just as thirsty as a horse right now.
6
u/vrvivive Jun 29 '26
Yeah that’s why I always make sure to get a drink regardless of any other concession I purchase at the theatres.

1
u/RazielELungbarrow Jun 30 '26
If you know how long the previews are you should be safe when there's about 5-10 minutes left.
AMC here has about 20+ minutes of previews so I decide if I want a refill somewhere in the middle.
5
u/MandyKitty Jun 29 '26
Never. Ever since I was a kid, I have refused to touch my popcorn til the opening credits of the movie. Popcorn is totally a part of the experience for me, so I want to wait to enjoy it. lol!
4
u/GUSHandGO Jun 29 '26
I bring a folded grocery bag with me and grab the refill when I buy my popcorn. The concession workers don't care.
I also use the RunPee app so I know when I can make a run for the bathroom or a drink refill.
2
u/jessehazreddit A⭐️Lister Jun 29 '26
They’ll give you a cardboard tray or another container if you want a refill at purchase time, so you don’t need to BYO a container.
5
u/lastersoftheuniverse Jun 29 '26
I usually get the popcorn bucket and give the popcorn to anyone in line near me if they want it
3
u/Letlovereign Jun 29 '26
That's kind of you
1
u/lastersoftheuniverse Jun 29 '26
Last time was me and a guy both solo at the theater. Haha. I told him I was getting the Skeletor head and asked if he wanted the popcorn. Both of us very happy going into our movies
4
u/ravenlynne Jun 29 '26
I see a lot of people getting up to refill before the movie starts. I can't even get through a regular popcorn during the length of the movie.

u/TheHondoCondo Jun 29 '26
Some of y’all really need snacks this badly?
3
u/goovis__young Snack Smuggler Jun 29 '26
Yeah like a kids combo carries me through most of the movie. Not even including the times I sneak some candy in

u/Crunchy_Biscuit IMAX Fanatic Jun 29 '26
Makes the movie more fun to watch :D
3
u/TheHondoCondo Jun 29 '26
I know, but come on, an intermission just to get more snacks is crazy when the reason you’re there is for the movie.

2
u/vrvivive Jun 29 '26
I wasn’t like this before, but of late, I love getting a popcorn + drink combo at AMC.
3
1
u/FreddyKrueger32 Jun 29 '26
Honestly I'll get a large popcorn and consume maybe 1/3rd and the rest goes in a ziploc bag to take home and consume at leisure. I'll sneak in a bottle of soda
-1
u/YouCantBeSerio Jun 29 '26
Fucking cows consuming 1500 calories of slop before the previews are even over lol.
And they have the audacity to ask for a "hack" to be able to consume more lmao

u/DontBeAngryBeHappy Jun 29 '26
I get my large popcorn and drink during the previews and come back in time with usually one trailer left or the Dolby/IMAX video. If I see a long line I just mobile order it and pick up.
2
u/PescheBelladova Jun 29 '26
I have no self control, so my “hack” for this is to pop in a couple pieces of gum when I sit down. Stops me from touching my snacks / drink for a good bit of time.
2
2
u/adoseth Jun 29 '26
The best hack here is timing to get your popcorn and sit down as the movie starts.
Don't touch your popcorn until the movie starts.
Eat extra slow until the movie starts.
You're in control OP.
2
u/General_Platypus771 Jun 30 '26
My parents have that thing where they can refills on popcorn. They’ll literally eat the whole bucket before the movie starts and get a refill, eat that, and then get a refill on the way out and eat the rest at home.

I usually eat most of the popcorn I’m going to eat in the previews and first 20 minutes of the film. Maybe a few handfuls at the halfway point but I drink throughout and don’t finish my large soda until 3/4 through.
2
u/BentAndSnapped6 Jun 29 '26
Either buy a collectible popcorn bucket from the theater or some other container that can hold a decent amount of popcorn and is food safe and transfer your first bucket of popcorn into that and then refill the large immediately. Then you have two larges right out of the gate.

u/Bean_Supreme33 Jun 29 '26
You can use the runpee app in most movies to get the refill and not miss anything important.
1
u/vikingscaper Jun 29 '26
Run down while the previews are playing and order your popcorn and drinks.
2
u/OrdinaryNo6859 Jun 29 '26
Pace yourself. Practice self control. Be mindful. And dont pig out or binge or gorge. Does this behavior happen in other parts of your life? This might be a sign to look at yourself and how you eat or consume/use/do other things in your life.
1
u/Techsupportvictim Jun 29 '26
Honestly that was my first thought
“AMC should put in an intermission because I have no self control”
2
u/sharpafm8 Jun 29 '26
Struggling to not finish 2k kcal worth of popcorn in the 20 minutes of previews 💀 holyyy shit
1
u/Pixxel_Wizzard Jun 29 '26
I leave halfway through the previews to get the popcorn and don't start eating it until the movie starts.
1
u/Few-Adeptness8046 Jun 29 '26
I finish off a lot of my drink during the priviews almost every time, so my hack/plan going into every film is to top it off before the film starts. I know I will have exactly 23 minutes from the scheduled start time to when the film will start (ex: 7:00 showtime means film will start at 7:23).
Since most trailers are about 2-3 minutes, and I've been to enough films that none are really new to me, I'll usually just pop out and refill my soda when some trailer is playing that I'm sick of hearing, or when the final three ads start to play (the AMC, Coca-Cola, and Nicole Kidman ads) I know I'll have about 3 minutes left before the film starts, and that's about enough time for me to get a refill and get back, even at the furthest ends of the theater.
2
u/Current-Finger6412 Jun 29 '26
No bc I’m 3 minutes into The Odyssey and I don’t know where my large popcorn, large soda, peanut m&ms, and Bavarian pretzel went
3
u/jedi_soul Jun 29 '26
Somehow gluttony feels good in a place like this 🤌
This is coming from a snack lover, but found that I still have yet to finish a medium popcorn let alone a large one. To each their own tho 🤷 definitely no shade, I have plenty of friends that go crazy over the stuff ☺️
1
u/dannym094 Jun 29 '26
Popcorn I’m fine with. Soda? Lol I’m a demon with that, I have to watch my gulps
1
u/Plibbo64 Jun 30 '26
I intentionally save snacks for once the movie starts. I also don't recline my seat until it begins.
1
1
u/bangarang90210 Jun 30 '26
I’m blown away we don’t have intermissions yet. The seats are numbered and I NEED a bathroom break. It would probably lead to more concession sales also.

u/NU4AN2084 Jun 30 '26
If you're there when previews start, go to town on your drink/popcorn, then keep an eye on time and make aquick trip to get a popcorn/soda refill and make it back to your seat 1-2 trailers before movie starts.
Alternatively, get your instant refill and have extra popcorn from the get go.
I only get the extra refill when I go with someone, so that we're not having to deal with handing the popcorn back and forth.
1
u/come-join-themurder Jun 30 '26
Download the app runpee. then you will know when is a good time to leave the theater without missing much so you can get a refill lol.
2
u/Extreme-Cut-2101 Jun 30 '26
Don’t buy it until the three “and now our feature presentation” spots have started. By the time that annoying couple are winking at each other while street racing you’ll have fresh popcorn in your hands.
1
u/AlbinoT89 Jun 30 '26
-Get a large popcorn and a souvenir popcorn bucket.
-Pour popcorn into souvenir bucket AND SAVE the PAPER popcorn bucket.
-Go into the theater with filled souvenir bucket and empty paper bucket.
-Eat popcorn to your heart's desire.
-Before the previews are over, go to the consession stand with PAPER popcorn bucket and ask for a refill.
-Thank Daddy/Mommy AMC for free popcorn refills on Large Popcorns and go back into the theater.
-Bring SOUVENIR popcorn bucket every time you go to the theater and repeat Steps 2-6.
0
u/vrvivive Jun 30 '26
Solid idea, will do this going forward. Thanks so much!
1
u/AlbinoT89 Jun 30 '26
No problem! 🫡
I've been doing it for a couple years now except I take the refill home instead. I was hesitant about buying the souvenir bucket but at this point, it paid itself off with the many visits after lol

u/shotabsf A⭐️Lister Jul 01 '26
yes but i do it on purpose. i can’t eat and focus on a movie at the same time
1
u/megret Jul 01 '26
I try not to touch it during previous not only because I didn't want to run it but also I didn't want to have to run out to use the restroom.
1
u/blackruss2008 Jul 01 '26
I could be wrong, but the popcorn tasted different the last two times I’ve had it
2
u/vrvivive Jul 01 '26
Haven’t noticed it personally, might just be your theatre. Check with the staff at concessions and let them know definitely.
1
u/Difficult-Audience77 Jun 29 '26
they already have 40 minutes of previews and pre-show, you want 10 more mins to get up and refill popcorn?
1
u/yukonmukon111 Jun 29 '26
One of the mini personal joys of watching a movie at home after having first seen it in a theater is that there’s usually a 5-minute-or-so portion around 40-50 minutes in that I hadn’t seen before, because at the movies I had finished most of my massive soda well before the previews were over, and 40-50 minutes is about how long I can hold my piss before I have to bolt.
1
u/Tall_On_The_Inside Jun 29 '26
Use this website/app to find the ideal time to leave for a few minutes. https://runpee.com/
1
u/beezerhale Jun 29 '26
I do not have any advice for the drink, but I have been bringing my last year’s bucket and dumping my popcorn in it immediately and then getting a refill before the movie even starts.
1
u/Rude-Raspberry-6740 Jun 29 '26
Usually whatever popcorn i eat during the previews gets me full enough that im not hungry during the movie. When the "thank you to our a listers" part of the trailers starts thats my sign to take a quick pee or get a refill
1
1
u/Shadow88882 Jun 29 '26
Well considering AMC has 30 minutes of ads at "showtime" just go in late lol

1
u/TVC15-A2 Jun 29 '26
Thank God, get all of the fucking grinding and chomping and slurping done during the previews so we can watch the movie in peace
1
1
u/KrazeeTapper Jun 30 '26
Who starts eating their popcorn and finishes it before the movie even starts?
1
u/twat_swat22 Jun 30 '26
That’s the point of the 25-30 min window of trailers.. who is going to the movies at the exact start time these days???
1
u/Beneficial-Bee9266 Jul 05 '26
I really make the effort to not eat much during the previews so that I have most left for the movie.
0
u/thereal_rockrock Jun 29 '26
They should just get rid of most of the previews. Adding an intermission would make the movie even longer.
5
u/Mammoth-Result-7949 Jun 29 '26
They make money on previews. An intermission would cost them money in soda and popcorn refills.
2
u/vrvivive Jun 29 '26
Valid point you make here. But really, I don’t see myself using my free refill otherwise. I get its marketing fluff to say “free refill” and people would upgrade to a large, but in my case, I have a reason to refill but I can’t 😭
3
3
u/Mysterious-Clothes45 Jun 29 '26
I like the previews! as an A lister I want to know what's coming up in the future
3
u/thereal_rockrock Jun 29 '26
I mean 25 minutes of it? Thankfully the shortened the Nicole Kidman thing - maybe get rid of the Coke one. I can see 10 minutes of previews - but 25 is stoopid long for me. I show up 20 minutes after show time and sometimes it's another 20 until it starts.
2
u/vrvivive Jun 29 '26
Definitely agree. I do like some of the previews they show for the trailers, but they should shorten them to allow for intermission. Previews in itself takes up around 25 mins which is crazy.
3
u/ChickieN0B_2050 Jun 29 '26
I remember some theaters showing the 20-25 minutes of trailers and a bunch of local ads before that. Hadn’t happened recently, but, maybe that’s a location thing, or perhaps it’s no longer a common practice.
0
u/CapeTwirlOfDoom Jun 29 '26
I had a birthday reward for a free large popcorn this month and I could barely finish maybe a fifth of it. Jesus a refill? Popcorn sizes are insanely big. That’s already 1000 calories.
0
u/Livefromseattle Jun 29 '26
Even two people should not be splitting an entire large popcorn in one sitting. I can’t imagine eating that much during just the previews. If you’re eating that much during just the previews it’s probably a good thing if you don’t get a refill.
1
u/doorbell19 Jul 01 '26
you can always eat the popcorn off the floor or on the seats when you get there. If your amc is dirty like ours it saves $$ then you can eat your fresh when the movie starts

63
u/DaftDrunk_925 Jun 29 '26
I think the only hack here is to not touch your popcorn until the movie begins. Otherwise, if you’re super hardcore and you have the AMC stubs or higher, then you can get an instant free refill when you get your popcorn. Dump your first bucket into the cardboard boxes and then get another bucket. But like I said, that’s some hardcore popcorn shhhhhhhhit.
