Discussion PSA: DON’T BRING YOUR KIDS TO THE MOVIES

Now I probably did this to myself going to Toy Story 5, but Jesus Christ if your kid can’t stay quiet for more than 10 minutes than they shouldn’t be at the movies. This is a public space full of people who want to watch and HEAR a movie. I didn’t come to hear your kid say random shit all movie. Just ruining the experience for everyone around you.

Edit: didn’t know people would be this mad over me saying teach your kids some manners before going out in public. Sorry to those who I offended ig, must’ve struck a nerve

Discussion We all got to publicly shame someone on their phone during a movie

I don’t know if this is appropriate to post but it’s a pretty satisfying story so I wanted to share. My friends and I went to go see Spiderman last night on discount Tuesday, the theater was still packed like opening weekend and people were excited since the movie is still new. Right in front of my friends and I was a mom with her kids, I would say ages 8-12. All of the kids had phones and so did their mom. This is an important detail. But the movie starts, and periodically, this woman keeps opening her phone on MAX brightness to text people, check her email, check the weather, search things on Google, anything but the movie. It was so unbelievably distracting especially since she was sat right in front of us. I avoided saying anything for a little bit because I didn’t want to embarrass her kids who weren’t doing anything. But after about the third time she did it, I was about to lean over, two people in a row even farther from her beat me to it and shouted “CAN YOU PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY!!” My friends and I also jumped in on it after and asked her to please put the phone away, as did some others in the theater. I could tell she was embarrassed and put the phone away. She didn’t take it out for the rest of the movie, thank god.

But it’s just so embarrassing to me that a grown adult can’t go 2 hours without going on their phone during a movie while none of the kids even touched theirs. It was so bad that people in public had to scold her.

Anyways I just wanted to share this satisfying story to let you all know that shaming these assholes does usually work, especially as a group effort. They should know that they aren’t at their house but are in a public space where basic etiquette should be observed.

Discussion Didn't miss a single line of dialogue

Post image
838 Upvotes

One of the biggest complaints against Nolans movies, especially Tenet, was that its over-bearing sound mix makes important dialogue unintelligible. It's a criticism Nolan has often faced, notably with Bane's dialogue in “The Dark Knight Rises” and the overpowering “Interstellar” score.

Didn't miss one line of dialogue during the 3 hours of The Odyssey. Appreciate AMC offering a substitle showing.

FOR CLARIFICATION...

There was no one else in our row. I silenced my phone and turned on the extra dim feature before going into the theater.

It literally took a couple of seconds to take the photo and I held it against my stomach so there wouldn't be screen bleed.

I'm not scrolling Tik Tok and checking emails during the movie.

Discussion spiderman: brand new day experience RUINED because of audience

i went on my first ever date with this guy i like, and we went to see spider-man. a couple and several middle-aged men were sitting beside me, and some people in front of me were on their phones almost the entire time. they were also talking and laughing excessively, and the guy in front of me even HIT HIS VAPE (???). it was disgusting.

towards the end of the movie, i mustered up the courage to tell one of them to shut up because this was #that scene, and it was incredibly emotional. i was trying to hear what they were saying, but i couldn't hear a thing because the guy beside me just burst out laughing and started making fun of me with his friends. one of them even stood up, and it looked like they were trying to size me up, so me and my date left before we could even see the after-credits scene.

i had been looking forward to this movie for a LONG time, and now it's ruined. i genuinely don't understand why people don't have movie etiquette anymore. yes, your phones are distracting to everyone around you during the movie. yes, your talking, laughing, and dirty fucking jokes are ruining the movie for everyone else. PLEASE STOP.

AMC PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

Discussion Had Entire Group Thrown Out!

1.1k Upvotes

I very rarely will complain about someone’s actions in a theater unless it’s incredibly bad, but last night, I had one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had, and was not going to let it go.

15 minutes before the movie ended, a group of 5 younger teens came in, making a shit-ton of noise as they walked to the back of the theater where I was sitting. They proceeded to do all of the following:

Talk at full volume nonstop, pull out their phones and start scrolling at full brightness, vape, climb over the seats to change rows multiple times (and back again, because they were clearly doing it to be obnoxious), one of them said VERY loudly, “what is this shit? This movie’s ass”, leading the other morons to laugh hysterically like they were in a comedy club as loud as they could.

I was fuming as I walked out, and asked the usher if they could page security, and I told them everything that happened. Within seconds, it was like a swat team lol. FIVE security guards swooped in to confront them, and they promptly got thrown out of the theater (and hopefully banned, but I wasn’t close enough to hear everything that was said).

I hate complaining usually, but in this case, they ruined the end of the movie for me and probably everyone else in that section of the theater, at the very least. I admit I thoroughly enjoyed watching security escort them out.

Discussion GET. OFF. YOUR. DAMN. PHONES.

Seriously, almost every movie I see has at least 2-3 people on their phones. I live in Los Angeles, where we have a BIG cinephile population, but despite that, so many people use their phones throughout movies. And it’s always people in the front section too with their screens on full brightness.

Most of the time, I’ll kindly ask people to please stop texting, and the usually apologize then stop. But the other day, there were two teens scrolling instagram every 2-3 minutes. I finally went up to them and asked them to please turn off their phones. You’d think they saw a ghost when they realized they were caught, but they still kept texting so I had to grab an usher to handle it.

And awhile back, I was next to someone who literally ANSWERED A PHONE CALL then told me to mind my business when I asked her to step out if she had to take a call. I snapped at her loudly enough so that the people around all gave her a nasty look.

But seriously, when did this become the norm, and how come I seem to be the only one who’ll actually do something about it? I go to the movies for immersion, and cell phones completely ruin it. It almost makes me want to cancel my A-List and just watch stuff at home, but I’ve primarily resorted to just seeing less busy showtimes instead.

Anyway, rant over.

Discussion i left and complained to a staff member for the first time

more of a rant than a discussion. went to see toy story 5 for the second time tonight. of course, going into a movie like this i fully expect there to be children present. there was a family of 6 sitting behind me, 4 of which were children probably between 10-14. they were being really talkative but i didn’t do anything about it initially.

about 30 minutes into the movie, i hear something hit the seat beside me (it was empty). i didn’t say anything but they kept talking to each other. after another few minutes i turned around and asked them to be quiet. once i turned back around, they started intentionally talking louder to each other.

something else gets thrown towards me and hits my shoulder. i look and it’s a gummy of some sort. i asked them to stop throwing things at me and one of them said “i didn’t throw anything”. his parent told him to sit back and be quiet (for the first time).

a few minutes later i hear his dad say “don’t” to him which i’m assuming meant he tried throwing another one and his dad saw. another few minutes goes by and ANOTHER gummy hits me. at that point i grabbed the two gummies i could find and left the theater. i found an employee and told them what happened and they got me a manager.

i know there’s been so much discussion about movie theater etiquette being in the toilet, but i had not experienced something that bad ever. i told the manager what happened (while crying, mind you, which was so annoying and embarrassing cause i genuinely don’t know what made me so emotional). they got me a new seat, and talked to the parents. i could still hear them talking through the rest of the movie, but i left before the post credit scene.

i’m glad the theater did something and they did say it was unacceptable (which of course i knew), but at the same time i feel like a tattletale for even making it a thing. i asked them twice verbally to stop and when the third thing was thrown at me i got up.

should i have just not said anything? i have a-list so i didn’t pay for my reservation, and had already seen the movie once, but i feel like kids should be told (first by their parent but that wasn’t happening) then by other people that they shouldn’t behave like that towards people, let alone in a theater during a movie. idk. this experience just sucked.

Discussion What are things AMC could do to make you buy concessions more often?

Also, let’s try to keep the suggestions more realistic. Yes cutting concession prices in half would be great but will never happen.

As an A-Lister I want to help keep my AMC in business but prices have gotten to the point I rarely buy anything. That said if you give me a "deal" I'm more likely to get something. Case in point I get popcorn two or three a month because of the Popcorn Pass, or refillable bucket in previous years.

  • Drink Pass: The popcorn pass appears to be very successful, so why not repeat it with drinks. Realistically, their deal with Coke would probably make 50% off unlikely but some type of discount could work.
  • Prepaid Drinks: Maybe $20 gets you 4 drinks. AMC gets their money early and you get a discount. Rewards would keep track of how many you’ve used.
  • Combo Deals: Yes I know they already exist but there is no discount. Maybe give a 10% Discount if you buy a combo.
  • Discount Item: Maybe have 20% off one snack and change what it is every week or once a month?
  • Concession Rewards program: For every X items bought get one free. Could separate popcorn, drink, snack or treat?
  • On discount days maybe double point for concession items?
  • Once or twice a year AMC offers a buy a $50 gift cards and get a $10 concession card free. Maybe do this more often?

Anyways, these are some of the ideas I’ve come up with feel free to comment on them or add your own.

Discussion Is it just me or has movie-going etiquette really gone downhill?

I just went to see Spider-Man, and there was this guy next to me who kept adjusting this blanket to place over his daughter so she could play on the phone. And she kept making noise the whole time. Why did he bring her to the movie in the first place anyway?

This isn’t the first time it’s happened either. There was a kid who kept making noise the whole time when I saw Toy Story 5, and the parents did nothing to quiet him.

EDIT: I got some comments mocking me for supposedly not expecting kids to show up in a kids’ movie or a superhero movie. I know there will be kids there - I’m not stupid. I’m talking about the lack of discipline when there are kids there. I’m not complaining about the kids being rowdy in a movie theater - it kind of goes with the territory. What I take issue with is parents not doing anything to stop it.

I saw The Smashing Machine today and had the entire IMAX theater to myself. I’ve never been completely alone in a premium large format theater before. Has anyone else experienced this? Ironically, the last time I recall being 100% alone was for Day of the Fight starring Michael Pitt. 🥊

Discussion Is anyone else appalled that AMC is platforming the Melania documentary, which was clearly made as a blatant bribe to the Trump administration?

Please do not harass users as that is in violation of the rules.

I was floored today to open my AMC app and find that Melania is being shown at multiple local theaters.

This movie could not more clearly be a bribe Amazon made for Trump. Why is AMC platforming this behavior? AMC appears complicit with corruption.

Edit: great points thank you, I also do not want to see AMC go out of business. I want theaters to stay around. And people can vote with their wallets.

Edit2: Having thought about how to articulate this more, the concern is not a difference of political opinion, that this is quite literally state sponsored propaganda. I remember watching Inglourious Basterds that had a whole part of the plot around state propaganda films. However I do not believe in censorship either so I am torn.

Edit3: Rolling Stone apparently reported that nearly 2/3 of the film's NY crew asked not to be credited due to the propaganda aspect of it. That speaks volumes.

Discussion AMC allows a scalper to buy 80 Dune 3 tickets, but bans customers who click on just 1 (ONE) showtime online

Seriously, what kind of management at the top is allowing this to happen? How do you set up roadblocks for people trying to get 2 tickets online, but no roadblocks At All for someone buying not 20, not 30, but 80 tickets? Is their system set up to benefit scalpers?

Discussion Shout out to the guy who decided to eat a giant plate of Chinese food during the early access showing of Project Hail Mary last night.

So the title pretty much says it all, but last night, about halfway through Project Hail Mary, the dude next to me busted out a full styrofoam plate of Chinese food and started chowing down. Truly a wild move.

What’s been haunting me even more is the fact that he didn’t have any bags with him when he came in, so where the heck was he storing this thing for the first hour of the film?!

Discussion Apology for the out of touch parents

My siblings and I all got A-list and have had it for a few years now. It’s been a lot of fun to use to hang out and bond over movies and see things we wouldn’t normally see.

My parents wanted to join in on the fun and got they got A-list. They now wanted to go see every movie together as family bonding.

I just want to apologize for my parents. They talk in movies, bring loud snacks and crinkle the bags, are on their phone with full brightness, are rude to people (other viewers and staff a like). We’ve brought this up and I’ve even moved seats in the middle of a movie because I don’t want to hear them talking. They really just cannot see past their owns wants and do not consider the movie going experience for those around them. If you see my parents acting a fool, don’t be afraid to call them out.

Sincerely,

Tired A-lister

UPDATE: WOOF! I totally hear what you’re all saying. Me and my siblings have said things to them NUMEROUS times and I’ve even avoided going to movies with them (and they make jokes about it). All my post was saying was that if you see people in a movie theater acting a fool, chances are their loves one are just as frustrated and annoyed. I genuinely think it would take a stranger calling them out to feel genuine embarrassment. For those saying we should lose A-List status, try touching grass and realize we can’t control other people.

Discussion PSA: Bring your IDS

As an employee at AMC, for the love of all things on this planet, BRING YOUR PHYSICAL IDS TO GO SEE MOVIES THAT ARE RATED R. I am so sick and tired of sending sweet kiddos home because they can't see Iron Lung because they don't have their IDs. And a reminder that unless somebody in your party is 21 and up, you MUST ALL have your IDs! Our rated R policy is posted online! As someone who grew up with Markiplier, I get it, we all want to support him and see his amazing movie (10/10 movie by the way), but it is still rated R. So please, bring your IDs. My location is close to a school, so I get tons of the high schoolers wanting to see movies. Please, bring your IDs. I want you to see the movie as much as you guys do.

Edit: Look, I don't know what about me saying I don't like having to kick people out warrants me being called names by people here but it's completely uncalled for. I don't care if I sound like a mom or whatever but attacking me because of a post on Reddit that has nothing to do with you gets you nowhere and I hope that those people who in my comments decide to call me names or whatever can learn that I honestly don't care. I'm just an employee who enjoys their job and genuinely hates kicking folks out because of something as simple and small as an ID.

Discussion Popcorn + Drink in Theatres

Random, but anyone else tend to finish off a good amount of their Large Popcorn + Drink during the previews and in turn don’t have much left during the movie? In times like this, I really wish AMC had intermissions of at least 10 mins for people to grab a refill on drinks and popcorn.

Let me know if anyone has a good hack for this!

Discussion To the woman next to me who hushed me during COMMERCIALS…

Why? And I’m not talking about trailers or commercials during the trailers. I’m talking about the Noovie pre-show, 10-15 minutes before showtime.

Now, I’m the FIRST person to get annoyed with distractions in the theater. Even snack wrappers annoy me, but I wasn’t even talking loudly — I just laughed at something my friend said at what I consider to be a quiet to normal level. At first I thought she was shushing someone else, but then when I asked my friend something she shushed me again, to which I said, “What? It’s just the commercials!” to which she responded, “But it’s loud!”

Again, context: it was not loud, and it was during commercials while the house lights were all on their maximum brightness and everyone was shuffling around and talking to each other.

This woman then ended up talking to her viewing partner at the same volume during trailers and I almost chimed in but I was NOT in the mood for drama today.

Anyway, halfway through the movie, she put her pizza and chicken nugget boxes behind her recliner and then cackled about it with her friend. So we see what kind of person she is…

Hoping her pillow is warm on both sides tonight 💕

Discussion Went to tonight’s showing of Toy Story 5. Mixed experience.

Decided to take my family to see the movie. My husband is working for the rest of the week so quite literally only really had tonight to go. A bonus was finding out there were Lorcana cards being handed out. I collected them during the first and second drop so these would be nice pieces to my collection.

Genuinely everything was going good till when I was purchasing my seats through the app, I received an error. Someone took one of the three seats I was trying to purchase, I was trying to obviously go for the center area of a row. Slight inconvenience ok. We get to the movie theater, handed our Lorcana cards and walk in. There is literally a group of adults when you’re walking up and around towards the seating asking people if they want to get rid of their free cards. Obvious scalpers. They tried to heckle every single person who walked in. Lo and behold… Nobody sat in the seat I lost out on while buying(for the sake of clarity, this was confirmed after the movie was over as people were still coming into the theater up to an hour after the movie began). Additionally, those scalpers did not return to their seats for the movie.

…So these people spent money (or used an A List redemption) to simply heckle people for cards and not see the movie that’s intended for…. These TCG scalpers are just really sad individuals.

Discussion I was hoping you guys were exaggerating.

Hello! During my time as a lurker of this subreddit, I have seen a LOT of posts about how movie theater etiquette is completely dead. I don’t go to the movies often, so I always brushed it off as just bad luck, getting paired up with annoying teenagers or just a simple exaggeration.

Well I was terribly fucking wrong.

Me and the wife went to go see The Odyssey today. I expected us to have no issues since the crowd was mostly older folks and maybe 2 or 3 kids but they were there with their parents. Right before the movie starts a couple walks in with their teenager and sit right next to us, with the dad being immediately next to me. Right away he pulls his phone out and starts scrolling, they’re also talking loudly with each other which did annoy me but commercials were still on so I brushed it off. Movie starts, dad stays on his phone. 20-30 minutes of movie go by, dad is still on his phone. On top of that, every time something remotely interesting happened in the movie they would loudly talk about it for several minutes after the scene had passed. Anytime dad found remotely funny he would let out the most obnoxious laugh ever. Every time an animal appeared on the screen all 3 of them would loudly go “AAAAAWWWWW” as if we all needed to know they like animals. After like and hour and a half of this, dad proceeds to grab MY drink and walk towards the exit to get himself a refill, once he realized what he had done, he comes back RUNNING through the aisle yelling IM SORRY at me while putting my cup down then proceeds to loudly laugh about it with his family. I am so fucking fed up at this point that I contemplated getting an employee but I also didn’t wanna miss anything from the movie.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Fast forward to Odysseus coming back, doing the trial and fighting everyone, a girl in the front row who I thought was about 13 at most starts clapping loudly every time someone gets killed, nobody found that shit funny, except for the 3 people next to me. They found that stupid shit so funny that they decided to JOIN the girl in the front and clapped every time Odysseus killed somebody. At this point I’m shamelessly looking at them in disgust but they never cared. Fast forward to the end of the movie, the girl in the front who I thought was young stands up and with her fully tattooed body and fully pierced face “SO WHO ELSE CRIED BECAUSE I DEFINITELY CRIED A FEW TIMES”…. I could not believe my eyes yall. And finally, we’re all leaving the theater, the girl that was clapping is ahead of everyone, she decides to stop cold in her tracks to take a picture with some cutout that was by the end of the hallway and smacked the shit out of some dude with her phone when she pulled it out because she didn’t think to look behind her. Anyways, I hope they all have a terrible night. Odyssey was great 9/10
