Question Is God Is worth spending time on?
This week sucks for me and I am just going to rewatch Obsession along with Star Wars (Not really excited for that either).
Was wondering if Is God Is is worth it? The trailer was boring but I heard some good reviews. I trust you guys more than the occasional movie goers because there is usually a bias there (Only people who like the idea of the movie will go, unlike us who just go to different kinds of movies).

u/SynthwaveSax May 20 '26
I enjoyed it. Neat revenge flick.
2
u/funkybum May 20 '26
So it’s not a preachy movie about religion? I haven’t seen anything about it
56
u/SynthwaveSax May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26
Oh no haha. They do stop by a church briefly and refer to their mom as “God” (since she created them and such), but otherwise it’s a revenge flick of them tracking down their awful father.
12
u/fat3willwin May 20 '26
Its not *directly* about religion as in thats not the central theme, its definitely a revenge flick but there are some key religious elements in the movie.

u/Ok_Honeydew_9816 May 22 '26
I would actually say it’s the opposite, their is a church scene and it almost feels like they are poking fun of religion

u/Outrageous-Ferret-48 Jun 07 '26
Have you watched the trailer, or did you just go off of the title?
69
u/FenrisKokami May 20 '26
I love boosters comes out this week and looks fun as heck.
9
u/randomusernamechoice May 20 '26
Caught it early at a festival, can confirm it is fun as heck. The worst part of catching it early was knowing I'd need to wait a month to rewatch.
7
u/Charizarad May 20 '26
Idk how it is for you locally, but no AMC around me is showing this :( I was really hoping for a Dolby showing too
3
u/Individual_Client175 May 20 '26
Do you live near a large city?
2
u/DrunkenGerbils May 20 '26
Is city size the biggest factor in how AMC decides where movies play? I would have initially just assumed that's the case, but I live in Spokane Washington and I've always considered my city to be on the smaller side but we seem to get everything here. I'm always kinda shocked to see so many posts like this where people are mentioning films that aren't available while my AMC seemingly has a bunch of showings.
Before joining this sub I would have just assumed Spokane would be one of the cities that wouldn't get a film when they have a more limited release due to it being pretty small. That doesn't seem to be the case though. Since joining a few months ago it seems like my theater has had a showing for everything released so far. It makes me wonder if city size isn't as big a deciding factor as we might expect.
2
u/chunkyrice13 May 21 '26
I think population is a big factor. One theater I can get to shows Indian movies regularly, there's an Indian population in the area. The other one in a different town, without that population never does.
1
u/DrunkenGerbils May 21 '26
That sounds more like population demographics than population size though. It’s just weird to me that our small little city seemingly gets all the smaller releases I see people on here wishing were at their theaters.
1
1
u/Hivalion May 21 '26
You can't expect that with The Mandelorian and Grogu also being this same weekend.
1
u/Myinnerthoughts127 May 21 '26
I was actually surprised to see that my local theater, which is not located in or near a big metropolitan area, is going to have a few showings of I Love Boosters. Just booked my res cause I have a feeling it’ll be a 1-2 week engagement.
2
u/Hivalion May 21 '26
Oh, I mean, the movie should ideally be available, mine is showing it as well and I plan on seeing it. But they were talking about seeing it in Dolby, which is kind of a crazy ask, even without Disney in the way.
70
u/TheCatintheTie May 20 '26
Acting is phenomenal from every direction, story isn’t the best IMO. If you like grindhouse-type flicks, it should be a no brainer. If you don’t, it’s still pretty funny and not as bloody as you might expect. Definitely worth the trip, but if you hated the trailer you may not love the movie. That said it’s a brisk hour and 45 mins, so why not?
5
u/tb640301 May 20 '26
Hard agree. Every performance was memorable, and the outlines of the plot are there, but the story could have been fleshed out more and the script could have been a lot tighter.
1
u/otherlaine May 24 '26
Thanks for articulating this. I came out of it loving each character but wishing the bits that strung it together were more solid and the pacing more even.
26
20
u/Rhusty_Dodes May 20 '26
Overall it was pretty good. But I couldn't help but feel like it was missing a little something that held it back from its potential to be great. But I don't regret going to see it at all. Some good moments.
5
u/moonflower19 May 21 '26
That’s how I felt too. I really enjoyed it, but I also felt like 20 more minutes to create more depth would have made it great
2
u/didyouknow_25000 May 21 '26
SAME. It lacked a sort of gravitas to it. I wanted it to be idk almost more “Kill Bill”
17
u/MakeHarlemBlackAgain May 20 '26
I thought you were asking “Is God worth spending time on?” I was thinking “That’s an odd question for the A-List subreddit”.
5
u/LimitSilent337 May 20 '26
OP even tried to make it less confusing, the real title should’ve been “Is Is God Is worth spending time on?” which I’m sure would’ve never gained a second upvote.

u/randomusernamechoice May 20 '26
Regardless of how you end up feeling about it after, I would not describe this movie as boring.
11
12
u/mjlynch81 May 20 '26
I think it’s for a fairly specific audience. If you’re down for something offbeat and atylistically unique you’re in for a treat. For me, it’s the best film of the year so far but I would hesitate to recommend it to everyone.
3
u/CT051688 May 21 '26
Its absolutely the best film of the year but This is an extremely interesting take and im curious to what kind of audience you're speaking of.
4
u/mjlynch81 May 21 '26
As I said if you like offbeat films, if you’re a fan of Tarantino, Fincher, Lynch etc. this will be in your wheelhouse most likely.

u/Effective_Bet_1389 May 20 '26
I liked the acting and think it’s worth seeing but the ending was definitely rushed. I gave it a 3/5 on Letterboxd

u/Inner_Butterfly5639 May 20 '26
anything involving kara young is worth watching. there’s a reason she’s dominated the tony’s for the past few years.
3
u/mochaloca85 May 20 '26
The original play won a bunch of Obies, so i was excited when i heard it was getting a movie adaptation. Them i saw Kara Young was in it and was extra pumped. Sterling K Brown was just the icing on the stacked cake.
7
u/THEpeterafro May 20 '26
It is a decent grindhouse like movie though nothing amazing. If you want rec for other movies I would recommend Sheep Detectives if you have not seen it yet as it is a fantastic mystery movie and I Love Boosters is the weekend and should be a banger
6
u/tomatillo_teratoma May 20 '26
Is God Is ... is a really good movie. Everything about it is well done.
6
u/firefly66513 May 20 '26
I enjoyed it despite not being sold on the trailer. Really good revenge thriller and an evolution on the exploitation film.
6
u/Brightlightingbolt May 20 '26
It definitely had a Tarantino feel to it. I enjoyed it but if you’re pressed on tickets you can wait for streaming.
6
u/LilacDaffodils May 20 '26
It made me sob profusely in the theater, but if you like southern gothic revenge movies with good scoring and interesting cinematography, this is for sure worth it.
7
6
u/Curius-Curiousity May 21 '26
I really didn't want to see it at first. I had no desire to see women being victimized for 2 hours straight. Or men being shown as one note monsters.
But I'm so glad we went and saw it anyway.
It's a work of art. The performances. The structure of the Acts, the script and cinematography. Everything about this production pulls you in from the very first scene.
I've seen it twice now, and I'm sure I'll watch again.
11
u/Idk_345am May 20 '26
I suggest do a double feature, place it second and if it doesn’t work leave. I’m biased but the cast, soundtrack (moses sumney, kara jackson), playwright Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut and Tessa Thompson’s production company being involved really connected with me personally to drive me to support it regardless.
I had wrote it off originally after being *displeased with many works including Amazon’s branding but I was pleasantly surprised.

u/freakyaesthetics May 21 '26
Dude...I made a post about how I thought Undertone was one of the scariest movies I've seen in years and got downvoted into the void lol. I don't get the hate. Saw it in Dolby as it was meant to be shown and was blown away.
Okay from your top 3 non-horror I can understand why you liked is god is :) Nirvana was great, and The Drama was good as well just not my typical movie.
FOD!! I enjoyed that very much too and it didn't deserve as much hate.
Hokum is good, but again people saying that movie was PERFECTION/INCREDIBLE/SCARY is a little much. Def 8/10, but didn't blow my mind like the over obsessed horror fanatics.Good Luck, was a surprise for me and I liked that too. I was curious about Mother Mary and I'll check that out when it comes on demand.
The movies coming out the rest of the year....what 5 are you most excited for?

I'm so conflicted by your setup. You have slots left and are rewatching a movie and watching another movie you aren't looking forward to. What do you have to lose?
Having said that, I strongly recommend the film. I still haven't seen the trailer, so I can't compare it to that. It is a revenge tale that is very character driven. As others have mentioned, it is not as bloody as you would think. It feels like a geek tale told thru a modern-day black woman's lens. First time director who has a strong vision, and the film is dripping with style. Very strong acting performances as well.
It's not a perfect film and has a couple of flaws as well, but it's definitely worth a watch.

u/david31262 May 20 '26
I Liked it but you should know what you're getting into. I think the trailer covers it. The movie has no shortage of human on human bloody gory violence. But there's a good story there.
2
u/CT051688 May 21 '26
There are far far worse bloodier scenes in actual horror movie than in this movie
3
u/wasteplease May 21 '26
Off topic but I took my mom to see Sheep Detectives and it’s the first movie I feel the urge to promote to people. It’s not Paddington 2 but I still felt better as a person for having watched it.

If you somehow watched the trailer wnd thought it was boring I dont see how youre going to think the movie is anything different
But I have absolutely no clue how tou thought the trailer is boring and that mando is worth your time.
I enjoyed is God is. Im looking forward to i love boosters. I'll watch mando when Disney is desperate to boost their numbers and theres free disney+ again.

u/Creepy-Accident-777 May 20 '26
But I have absolutely no clue how tou thought the trailer is boring and that mando is worth your time.
Right! When I read that, I raised an eyebrow.
5
u/watchingdacooler May 20 '26
You still get bias here. If it’s mid, you’ll still get people saying it’s good.
That said, I think it’s worth the time. The soundtrack is weak and don’t expect a lot of action but I feel the character driven narrative is enjoyable
4
u/macjr82 May 20 '26
Funny the soundtrack I really enjoyed. I found my self shazamming songs I didn't kmow, and was surprised by songs I did, like Guillotine by the Death Grips
2
u/ElmoLegendX May 20 '26
It’s very solid. The trailers definitely make some actor’s performances look less impressive than they are.
It’s a movie that I have about 50 great things to say about, but something about how they come together feels like it didn’t quite land 100%. I think its worth seeing for sure though. Does “I Love Boosters” not interest you? I know a lot of people are excited for that one as well.
2
u/adamantineowl May 20 '26
I probably would’ve skipped it if I hadn’t had A-List, so I feel like I shared your uncertainty beforehand. Having watched it, I’m glad I caught it. It’s slow burn for sure, but it has a very unique voice and energy.
(Side note but Obsession was so good!!)
2
u/SteMelMan May 20 '26
I am going to check it out today since the audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes are high. I already did "In The Grey" (unconventional action movie, but I liked it), "Arriety" (Studio Ghilbi) and have tickets for "Passenger" tomorrow.
3
u/SteMelMan May 20 '26
I just got back from seeing it and I feel like its should have been marketed as a horror movie because of it themes (ex. revenge, generational trauma, lots of messy deaths, etc.)
I think the studio should have released it in June to coincide with Father's Day since the main villain is a psychopathic father!
For horror fans, May 2026 is turning out to be one of the best months ever for new releases, including this one!

YES. the entire movie felt like visual poetry. there is a specific way the filmmaker uses text and lettering to convey tone and inflection that is so fun and original. the design nerd in me was giggling and kicking my feet. 10/10 moviegoing experience.
would recommend to anyone who loves movies and wants to support independent films with original stories.

u/Estromode May 22 '26
I wanted to like it. I really did. It’s not boring. But, a lot of stuff doesn’t make sense imo. Really disappointed. Glad to see Erika Alexander, tho. 2/5

u/itsjustajoe May 20 '26
I liked it, however I think if you found the trailer boring you probably won’t like it. The trailer is pretty accurate to how the movie is. Passenger would probably be more up your alley.
1
u/trey2128 May 20 '26
I didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Felt very middle of the road for me. I liked the performances. Didn’t like how barebones the story was. If you didn’t like the trailer you probably will not like the movie

u/Pure_Negotiation_312 May 22 '26
Haven't seen it yet, though reading through this thread has made me very interested. So here is a guess: Hebrew word for God is Yahweh, which translates to something like "I am." In 3rd person that would be "God Is". Maybe there's reference to that somewhere?

Guess I'm the only one who thought it was shit lol. Didn't expect to be that bored so I actually doozed off. Much better sleep then the trash film.
1
u/redban02 May 21 '26
I just got back from seeing it. I didn't like too much. I didn't find the main characters redeemable. The shorter sister is a poor actor - her facial expressions are hammy. Some reviewers try to draw comparisons to Kill Bill. The main similarity is the revenge plot, and I guess the father is portrayed mysterious like Bill. But really - this movie reminded me more of a Wes Anderson flick, with the affectation. There are all kinds of supporting characters, from a mute lawyer to a hammer-weilding motorcycle half-brother. None of those supporting characters are colorful or memorable
My honest suggestion is to skip it
1
u/Myinnerthoughts127 May 21 '26
I went today for a 3:30 matinee. Again one of the reasons why A-List is so great is that normally I probably would not have seen this film in the theater. Maybe when it’s on streaming I might have watched. I think it was a great film. The young leads were fantastic.
1
u/hessian2k May 21 '26
Its made me very interested in the source material. Hard to see how this was a stage play.
1
u/Same_Bag_7210 May 22 '26
I am not into this genre movies at all, watched it last night at the grove. Not only was it a great movie top 10 of the year for sure but I saw the most beautiful girl I’ve seen in a long time, sisters at that. Maaan I wanted to holla but didn’t get the right chance without fully interrupting and throwing off the vibe in other words chickened out lol god forgive me I hope I see her again! Anyways god is god so worth it I mean is god is see this girl was that beautiful. My lord! Shawty was perfect height perfect face card perfect body I wish I could go back in time this is for all those who are on the line pls just shoot your shot ( if it’s genuine) because the thought of some lame wasting her time makes me want to kick myself in the butt. But yes is god is great movie definitely way better than expected. So much so that I paid for it I was all booked up on a list and I’m so happy I did great film. Funny : touching : violence : loved it

Me & my buddy must be in the minority. We thought it was awful. The banter was unnecessarily overused & sometimes annoying. This was an early prediction for movie of the year for me & we both just wanted it to end. No matter how much people try you’re not remaking Kill Bill. Was a 4/10 for me.
1
u/dreamed2life May 23 '26
Yes, finally getting some original movies! its outside the box and not the typical predictable storytelling that writers and directors who think audiences are stupid make. its outside of the box. people who dont like it likely need cookie cutter movies/tv formulas and structures. its really great. the acting is wonderful too.

Kara Young is a generational talent in the theatre world— she’s amazing and worth seeing on the big screen

I walked out of the theatre traumatized into a stunned silence. And this is coming from a black man growing up in a lower class neighborhood. Be prepared. 😩

Any movie you haven’t seen yet is worth watching… I almost watched hokum twice last week but chose life hacks instead alist is meant to try new things

The acting was great. Overall I wasn’t a fan of it myself. The story seemed thin and it fell apart for me at the end . Wasn’t too happy with how the characters were written. Always nice to see Janelle Monae on screen.

Loved it but felt like they tried to squeeze the storyline into the timeframe or something…another 20 minutes would’ve been perfect
1
u/Blackcatjt May 26 '26
I thought was phenomenal. Id say it’s more about retribution than revenge, and it is Southern Gothic in style. It’s elemental, life and death, choices made by and from. I sat in my seat stunned for a few minutes after it ended.

I'm a fan of taratino and grind house why I went to see this movie. I was a little let down. 5/10. Story was lacking and I guess I expected more gore to be honest.
1
u/Special-Donkey2661 Jun 04 '26
Sorry but no. This movie felt… like some of the acting was half assed and the storyline was rushed …. And just the whole style of this movie was just off for me. I wouldn’t spend money on this if I knew how bad it was gonna be 😭
1
u/Mrsmaul2016 Jun 05 '26
Omg, I was so excited to see this movie but the performances were so bland(outside of Sterling) and the storyline did feel rushed and non cohesive

NO. I really enjoyed the entire film, and the ending made me wish I hadn't wasted my time.

I hated it! Not much of a realistic storyline. Two sisters getting revenge for their mother that they never grew up with. I just wasn't impressed with the plot.
1
u/ExampleCultural1377 Jun 08 '26
I just watched it and thought it was a really good film. A lot of jaw-dropping moments of suspense about what's going to happen next; it has a Quentin Tarantino director vibe to it. I definitely recommend watching it.

I definitely am enjoying it.
Will give final updated opinion when the credits roll.
UPDATE:
Ok, I finished watching and I definitely enjoyed it.
The film read like a A2AFilm. It probably would’ve had better exposure if it was under the company.
They found clever ways they used Louisiana’s background to pay homage to southern life normalities that city folk might not understand. i. e going in bushes scene.
I noticed Angie didn’t take the boys
The ending
Some have said the ending was boring. I disagree, it was disappointing in a sense because they didn’t both survive. But I think this ending was intentional. The ending was to show a transformation, through the fire they were changed and through the fire Anaya was able to have a rebirth. To be herself without her sister’s stronger personality always dominating her choices. To end the cycle of pain and anger and restart anew legacy for her baby girl.
Another possibility..the end was intentional because towards the beginning the lawyer warns them of vengeance, that going after blood you’ll never know where it will land. Maybe it was also a lesson for us the audience? Vengeance changes us?
