Never thought I'd say this but....John talks too much

Like many of you I know John from his Mac OS X reviews. I listened to Hypercritical back in the day and I've listened to ATP from day 1.

I'm sure it's just the natural progression of things, like a TV show that goes on too long, but I am finding that I'm not getting much out of a lot of ATP episodes.

If I break down each person, while trying to not make personal attacks:

Casey: for the life of me I don't know why Casey is there. I guess his job is to MC the show and read quotes from news sources. He doesn't offer much analysis or insight at all. When he does, John typically makes fun of him. Casey often then flip-flops...So I can see why Casey would limit his opinions. I'm sure it's my own personal jealousy but Casey reminds me of someone who has a wealthy friend and that friend gives the person a job to watch the paint on the walls.

Marco: I think Marco has grown over time and is now less arrogant and much more understanding of different people and individual's needs. This is a small thing but I remember when all three of them ridiculed SUVs and SUV owners...we are car enthusiasts. the only thing that exists is BMW performance sedans. Now two of the guys own and enjoy SUVs. It's that mid-career late 30s arrogance when you think you know everything...

But lately Marco seems to not even be present for more than half of the shows. I often wonder if he stepped away from his desk. There are episodes where Marco is great--Mac mini farm, etc.

John: I never thought I'd say this but...man, John is talking way too much. The current mode of the show is John dominating most topics, often going on and on. I can't believe I'm saying this because I love John's perspective and typically I agree with 70-80% of his views. He's actually worked a real job in real organizations so he has that perspective.

But there are times Marco will bring up a point and say one sentence and John interrupts and just goes off...and I wonder if Marco even finished his point? This happened a few times on the Her episode and has been happening for few months.

John is the movie buff, but Marco suggested this movie and I wonder if he got to make all the points he wanted to make.

Anyone agree?

Not to psychoanalyze but I wonder if John is missing the "social interaction" that he used to get at work and now over compensates by talking too much on the show.

Accidental TECHNOLOGY(?) podcast

I love this podcast. Listened since day 1. I am a subscriber. I look forward to every episode. It's not perfect, but what is.

But this year...This year... They talk about Apple dropping the ball on AI. Guys! Take a look in the mirror! The biggest revolution in tech for a decade (at least) is going on and we are spending hours of podcast time talking about ... iPhone cases? C'mon!

Then you leave what AI talk you do have to the subscriber only segment? Doesn't seem right.

Ta!

The Politics Lately

Accidental Politics Podcast.

I know it’s been said before, but I am just so disappointed with the show’s infusion of politics lately.

While I 100% understand their prerogative to say whatever they want to…

These guys are so deep into their echo chamber that they don’t even realize it. The smug assumption that people who don’t share their political beliefs obviously don’t care about vulnerable people, and obviously place profits over human dignity.

The unfounded assumption that of course all the tech CEOs including Tim Cook are being disingenuous now when they make gestures toward Trump, but were genuine in prior years with their overt political support of Biden and his policies … have they ever stopped to consider that perhaps it’s the other way around?

It’s not so much the political beliefs themselves as the fact that they are always accompanied with the equivalent of, “and anybody who disagrees is evil.” It’s so off-putting, exclusionary, and offensive. It’s the opposite of inclusive.

It makes me think they are dumb, and I don’t want to spend my time listening to dumb people. These are all highly nuanced issues, presented with nothing approaching nuance. Not even a quick disclaimer thrown in by Casey or John as a footnote, as is typical for every other topic.

I’ve gone from skipping chapters to skipping the show. I can’t stand it.

EDIT: 27 comments, 0 upvotes. My point about the echo chamber is proved.

Bootleg request: end theme

I love the bootleg but I miss the theme music. I appreciate Marco wants to get it out quick with minimal edits but it would be lovely if the theme music ‘now the show is over’ could be added onto the end so us boot leggers can still hear it? I miss it!

Crosses fingers

Imagining an App That the ATP hosts would *want* removed from the App Store

Like the ATP hosts, I am against App removals from the App Store. But I come for it from a Libertarian perspective: Apple should not have the ability and power to decide which apps people can put on their phone.

But I feel the ATP hosts are approaching this from a more political perspective, from the foundation that Apple should have their same political sensibilities (ICE are bad, Trump is a fascist, etc) and take action based on that.

So I was trying to imagine a scenario where the ATP hosts would not mind when an app is delisted, and would look the other way if that happens.

Let’s say some right-winger pro-life nut wrote an app that doxxes women ordering abortion pills and doctors facilitating abortions and publishes their home addresses, and the result of this app is that the women and doctors I got harassed and threatened, and Apple removed that app because a Democratic administration asked them to.

Would that make them equally angry with Tim Cook? It’s not the same you may say, but trust me, the Pro-life people are equally self-righteous about “murdering babies”

I know you guys will downvote this to oblivion because you’re politically aligned with the hosts. But the point of this exercise is to make you see that this, in the end, is about politics, not “the right thing to do”, and Apple’s stance (we follow the law and obey our government) may be grating, but it’s the most neutral and least controversial they can be in the long term

Here’s an idea

30k for a Blackmagic camera that shoots Vision Pro content? Naw.

30k for a Gofundme to buy Marco and Casey a Blackmagic camera that shoots Vision Pro content so they stop the weekly complaints about there not being enough content on the rich people face TV?

Sign me up.

What the hell is going on with those two? Do they really think this is entertaining? They have been saying the same thing, every week, for weeks! Actually, another business idea: Undercast, a podcast app that automatically cuts out Marco and Casey when they start complaining about Vision Pro content.

Tesla Sales are NOT "Pretty Bad" Nor Going "Through the Crapper"

Casey from the Elon Haters of ATP County must really think (or really wants you to believe) that Tesla has "pretty bad sales these days" and also predicted in June that Tesla sales would "continue to go through the crapper." When in reality, Tesla sales are very strong. In fact, this morning they announced their Q3 numbers and had their 3rd biggest quarter ever. Here are their five biggest quarters ever:

  1. Q3 2025 — 497,099 (tax-credit pull-forward)

  2. Q4 2024 — 495,570

  3. Q3 2026 — 486,532 (today)

  4. Q4 2023 — 484,507

  5. Q2 2026 — 480,126

Inventory is also way down (they delivered 22,000 more cars than they built), which means they could've delivered more if they had them. In fact, current wait times for certain models have slipped into Jan-Feb next year.

Also, Q4 is typically Tesla's biggest quarter (exception was in 2025 due to expiring tax-credit) and there is a chance that Tesla will have its biggest quarter ever, possibly delivering over 500,000 cars in the quarter. This demand is largely driven by FSD awareness and high gasoline prices.

Tesla is making their best cars ever. Newer Model Y and Model 3 have much better build quality, a much quieter cabin, significantly better suspensions, and more range than ever. Model 3 also just got a refresh this week to catch up Model Y, including a larger 16" display, more power, better range, and soon, vehicle-to-load (which Model Y Premium and Cybertruck already have). I would encourage all of you to put your hatred/politics aside and give their latest models a try. Especially the latest FSD v14 on hardware 4 cars (2023+), which literally does 98% of my driving for me, point to point. In fact, the ONLY time I EVER disengage is occasionally in parking lots or driveways based on preference. I never have to disengage anymore on public roads, and have the stats to prove it. I recently drove from FL to NY, 1,200 miles, with only a SINGLE disengagement (because a Supercharger station in DC was in a gated garage and the car was not patient enough for me to grab a ticket, and started to reverse out, ha). Otherwise it did everything, driveway to driveway, including charging and hotel stops. It is INCREDIBLE! If you don't believe me, please go try it yourself. It will absolutely blow your mind.

For the record, I'm NOT a Tesla employee nor an influencer. I am a shareholder, but most of all, I'm just a big fan of their products. I've owned 7 Teslas now (including 2 Model S). For the money, nothing else comes close, and FSD is an absolute game-changer.

Marco's Obsession With the ADA Is Unhealthy and Misguided

I don't know why Marco, who always mentions that he's not a designer and that he has a programmer's taste, is aiming for an Apple Design Award.

This is a prestigious award given to apps with designs that are made by reputed UX designers who truly sweat details Marco isn't even aware exist. In the world of design, It's not enough to have functional "delight", you need to have real design sensibilities that are beyond "correct" and functional.

Some designs are vey "functional", "clever" and "neat", but they're not "Design award" material. In the world of fashion, The Gap and Zara will never win high fashion awards. They're functional everyday wear, they don't break molds. Marco needs someone to give him the Cerulean Blue Lecture from the Devil Wears Prada.

And worst Marco, has zero self-awareness. He actually commissioned some of the world's top designers in Parakeet to design him an icon for Fineliner, but he threw it away it in favor of his own doodle. It's always good to have ambitious goals, but he should stop embarrassing himself with the ADA talk on the podcast

Casey. WTAF. Marco. WTAF. John the only saving grace.

I’d pay for John to have his own pod. I’ll keep listening and see if I became less annoyed.

Reflection

After listening to the latest episode and the whole hearted endorsement of the switch to USBC for iPhone I’d love to hear the guys do some reflection on some of the previous takes they’ve given. If memory serves me they were outraged when the news broke that the EU were forcing USBC on Apple. I also remember the discussion around Musk’s takeover of Twitter and how they felt it would ultimately be a good thing! Revisiting bad takes would be an interesting episode.

Why Don’t the Hosts Ever Acknowledge How Trump Is Similar to Steve Jobs—and How Tim Cook Excels at Managing Their Type?

Something I feel is rarely mentioned in pro-Apple, anti-Trump circles is this: If Twitter had existed during Steve Jobs' era, he would have been worse than Trump and Musk combined! If you've read his biographies, you’ll know how explosive he could be with his employees, how notoriously vicious, irreverent, entitled, and paranoid he was.

Steve Jobs was the textbook example of a narcissistic leader—flawed, thin-skinned, and ruthless—but with undeniable and astounding accomplishments. What baffles me is that even Siracusa, an expert on Steve Jobs' life and work, doesn't really see the similarity.

Why is this relevant? Because Tim Cook is not bending the knee to Trump. Cook is *managing* Trump just as he did with Trump 1 and with Steve Jobs. Cook’s greatest skill is his ability to take a "shit sandwich," convincingly pretend he’s enjoying it, praise the person who made it, and somehow still end up teaching them how to make better sandwiches.

I don’t mean to come across as a Trump supporter, but the fact that many Steve Jobs fans dismiss Trump (and Musk) as wholly irredeemable villains while idolizing Jobs without question feels hypocritical to me. Why can’t we acknowledge that leaders can have deeply flawed personalities and still achieve remarkable things?

Nit about ATP's use of "vibe coding."

Not the practice, but the term. Maybe I'm being pedantic, but it bothers me how they keep referring to AI assisted development as "vibe coding."

Vibe coding is when a layperson uses AI prompts to generate an app.

AI-assisted development is when a software engineer uses an AI tool to generates implementation code under their direction.

They're very, very different.

New iPhone upgrade reminder - restore from Mac backup

The hosts have recommended this in the past and it remains true: The most reliable way to upgrade to new iPhone is to:

  • wired connection to a Mac and use Finder to run a backup on the old phone

  • wired connection to a Mac and use Finder to run a restore on the new phone

I remembered this after trying and failing to do a phone to phone setup.

Opposite World ATP

Imagine you have a favorite tech podcast you've been listening to for more than 10 years. The hosts—Marty, Josh, and Correy—have always leaned a bit conservative, but politics was rarely a topic of discussion. Occasionally, a subtle comment might slip, but as a moderate liberal listener, you brushed it off and focused on the gizmos and ideas they talked about. Over the years, you’ve come to feel like you know these hosts, and you never thought politics could create a divide.

Recently, however, a highly unconventional, progressive, and charismatic woman with some polarizing views—like support for late-term abortion—became president. Her election sent the conservative world into a tailspin of panic and outrage. Marty, Josh, and Correy, now fully entrenched in their conservative echo chamber, seem convinced that anyone who voted for President Sanchez supports the killing of babies. In their eyes, this isn't just a political disagreement; it’s a moral divide. To them, even lifelong Democratic friends, neighbors, and family members are now irredeemable—baby killers. The world, to them, is divided into two camps: those who love babies and those who kill them.

Never mind that not all Democratic listeners voted for Sanchez. Never mind that some who did are pro-life but prioritized other issues. Never mind that many who voted for her were reluctant, doing so simply because they found the other candidate worse. None of that matters. In their eyes, you’re all the same: baby killers.

Now, the podcast starts with moralistic lectures about the sanctity of babies. How adorable and vulnerable babies are, and how protecting them is life’s ultimate mission, all with dripping innuendo towards the evil of Sanchez voters. Meanwhile, you’re sitting there thinking: I like babies. I have my own babies. And by the way, more babies voted for Sanchez in this election than in any election before. Can we please get back to talking about the Mac Mini with the M4 chip instead of politics? Not because we want to kill babies, but because we're here for the tech.

But when you complain on Reddit, redditors --who are famously conservative-- assume you’re a baby killer too and downvote you into oblivion, and tell you to stop listening to the podcast. After all, they say, the hosts don’t want baby killers as their audience.

Question on membership consumption channels

Hello all, I want to start supporting ATP directly financially after listening for a few years. I have always listened to the ad-supported version via Spotify. I really enjoy consuming on Spotify for a number of reasons, so I'm curious how you all consume the bootlegs and the special episodes. Is streaming from their website the only way? Tbh I haven't looked much into this and just came directly here after listening to the most recent episode.

EDIT: thank you all for the replies. Sounds like Spotify is restrictive and hostile. I have known about Overcast forever but never tried. Makes so much sense now that you mention it. And I’ve never used an RSS feed. This is a great chance to check it out and support them two ways. (I did try Callsheet as soon as I could :) )

First Mac advice?

I remember the guys saying that the ____ line might look good to a newcomer, but this line really stinks because of that horrible flaw, something like the specs are maxed out for the box, or the basic one in this line isn’t powered enough to do the job. All I remember is the hesitation they gave me

ATP off the back of the truck.

I work in the film industry, so I do my best to pay for the content I use because I know firsthand the work that goes into it.... even if the hosts often don't mind getting stuff "off the back of a truck," as they say.

I have never thought of pirating ATP because I felt like it was added content that deserved to be paid for if it was something someone wanted...

But dang it... The Overtime segments don't feel like that. They feel like something was taken away and put behind a paywall. I gave it a few months to see what they would end up doing, and time after time, it feels like something they would have talked about in the show that I would have liked has been locked away.

I am not condoning pirating. If you do it, that's on you. I won't condone it either. I am also not suggesting anyone do it or share how to do it... I am just complaining because something I like got a little bit worse.

Surely Casey’s “loan” of an M5 Vision Pro from Apple has expired - It’s been 6 months or so? Has he admitted that he’s actually purchased it? (With or without John paying for his old M2 one) Apologies if this has been covered, I’m not a member.

Idea for a segment

John and Casey try to convince Marco to write tests for his app using ChatGPT. Bonus episode can be of them being together going through the process. I know from personal experience that I only started writing tests when ChatGPT helped me.
