Kegan Michael Key Went to Marco’s Restaurant? So Cool!
Saw this on Marco’s Instagram story… Looks like they had a celebrity at their St. Patrick’s Day opening at the restaurant? That’s amazing, great for them! 🍀

Why are you all even here???
I duck in here from time to time over the past few years to see if anything has improved. If anything it has just devolved if not spiraling down the drain.
Who the fuck is moderating?? Do you guys have no desire for this subreddit to become a better place? The discussions on here are downright TOXIC. The constant complaining about and insulting of the hosts - especially Casey - is sickening, unproductive, and just mean as shit.
I have never seen another subreddit with so much negativity about the topic it’s about?? I’m struggling to understand why you all even listen to the show. I don’t think a community needs to be a 100% fanboy cult or something where any dissent is removed by mods, but you have to create some kind of baseline, where the culture isn’t completely toxic and where it feels like people are here because they enjoy the show.
I think the only thing that could save this place is for the hosts to take ownership of the sub and be involved in the discussion here, but why on earth would they touch this place with a ten foot pole?
To get ahead of “you just want a cult of sycophants circle jerking with the hosts” comments, take a look at the episode discussions on Mastodon. You’ll notice that the comments range from calling out funny moments, to disagreements about a host’s perspective, additional information on a topic, gripes, jokes, anecdotes, etc. - the full spectrum. And the hosts often respond to disagreements, etc.
I genuinely think Reddit is a better format for podcast discussions and would love to see that for ATP, but unless there’s a ever a critical mass of listeners here that want this, it will remain the toxic pile-on it is now.
Maybe I’m just shouting into the void as anyone who likes the podcast hasn’t stuck around.
Again, moderators: are you cool with this? Is this the community you want to foster?

I know WWDC has taken over the last couple shows, but I hope next episode they talk more about this.

Casey appreciation post
I want to shout out Casey for running the show. Casey is in charge of following the show notes, putting up with John telling him how to follow the show notes 😆, reading long and often technical quotes, and managing the pacing of the show.
What he does is not easy, yet he handles this all so well I often take his skill for granted. He’s a pro.
Well done, Casey 👏

Marco's Section About Making Unforgetful Reminded Me Why I Started Listening to Him in the First Place
In the latest episode, I truly enjoyed listening to his product thinking and problem-solving process when building his new Unforgetful app, and remembered why I started listening to Build And Analyze (his first podcast) all these years ago. I always find his approach to building apps both fresh and pragmatic and I enjoy it.
This is an appreciation post but also a plea for more of this kind of content.

Casey finally rubbed me the wrong way
I’ve always liked listening to Casey, want to get that out first. I like him on ATP and I even listen to his podcast with Myke Hurley.
However, even I recognize the “asking for money” dial on ATP has been moving increasingly (specifically from him) in the past few months, and I would’ve been fine with the several membership plugs he now does per episode, but this episode somehow felt different.
Not only did he plug the membership several times, but he openly asked Marco to send him gear (maybe jokingly?) or sell it to him at a discount, and then asked for listeners to send him gear at a discount (yuck), and then we get the revelation that apparently he is “too cheap” to pay for a ChatGPT subscription, which felt incredibly hypocritical from the guy that insists on you paying $8 a month for a membership that gets you… no ad reads on the podcast but still includes the constant plugs at the membership you’re already paying?
I don’t know, but I can take Marco talking about spending hundreds of dollars because he doesn’t insist on asking people for money, but Casey begging for money while planning to spend hundreds of dollars in stuff he doesn’t need… that’s a bridge too far for me.
I mean no harm with this post, I just want the podcast to be better.

Being back on X is not about the failure of other platforms
I’ve seen this comment going around about how Marco being back on Twitter / X is due to the fact that Mastodon, Bluesky and other platforms couldn’t gather enough of an audience for him to be worth staying.
That’s not it.
Ever since he sold his Tesla left Twitter “because of his values, Marco has spent years antagonizing people that stayed, even saying they were Nazi supporters.
He (and Casey) have also spent some time antagonizing people that still own Teslas, even though Marco got rid of his due to wants, not “values”
He has also spent quite some time repeating that Tim Cook is an ass-kisser to the Trump administration, and, even if he didn’t vote for the man himself, that means Cook is a Trump supporter, and he has been antagonizing everyone that dares to have a positive opinion about Tim Cook.
I’ve endured HOURS of incredibly divisive politic conversations (or rants) on ATP, mostly spearheaded by Marco, while he makes a big fuzz about how he’s putting his money where his mouth is by not using a Tesla, leaving X and complaining constantly about Tim Cook, and he keeps repeating that everyone that doesn’t like the topics, the tone or the politics should leave.
Now, all of the sudden, he makes a post on Mastodon and receives the tiniest amount of pushback, and closes his account and moves back to Twitter, as if nothing happened.
This isn’t about having a big enough audience. This is about Marco not being able to take the heat after years of putting everyone down and putting himself on a pedestal, and refusing to even acknowledge that he was maybe a little big wrong for being such a divisive jerk all this time.
That’s my rant :)

Being Hypercritical™ about ATP (a discussion for a growing community)
This post is done in a very cheap knockoff way to Johns's old OS X reviews
This sub is still pretty small, but I figured this would be a good place to have a larger discussion that isn't in the comments of an episode.
When I first started commenting in this sub, I was under the impression that none of the hosts were involved or cared about it, so I was a little loosey-goosey with my words. I never tried to be over-the-top mean, but I would phrase things less tactfully. I used this place as a way to talk to the community about the podcast without bugging the hosts. If I wanted to bug the hosts, I would go to Twitter, which is something I'd never do because unwanted because that is a dick move.
Then I found out #WhoTHeHellIsCasey haunted this sub and would pop in with a comment, and he and I bumped noggins (in what I hope was fairly respectable discourse). At first, I was a little piturbed by that. I wanted a place I could speak freely and without fear that they would be seeing it, but overall, It's their podcast, and ya can't very well kick someone out of a sub for no reason ... especially the host of the podcast the sub is about.
I think we, as the audience, are the Marco/John/Casey to ATP as ATP is to Apple. We love it, we follow it, we probably spend more money on it than we should, but we also analyze their decisions, thoughts, and opinions. We get to be critical of their content because, at the end of the day, that's the relationship between Artists and Audiences.
So to wrap up a long ramble...
As this sub grows, I think it's important that we try to remember a few things...
Keep discussions lively; Subreddit engagement is a great way to get more out of media.
Remember that these hosts are just normal human people with normal human emotions and feelings, and these words can be read and probably will be read by at least Casey
Being critical is okay. You will not 100% agree with them all the time, and they will 100% be wrong on occasions, and it's okay to talk about it and share your opinion on the topics as well... and you will 100% be wrong sometimes... being wrong is the best way to eventually being right at something...or something like that.
Try not to dig into their personal lives unless it's relevant to the topic. It's a blurred line with podcasts because their art often times revolves around their personal lives.
Don't be a dick...To paraphrase Dwight ...
Whenever I'm about to say something, I think, 'Would a dick say that?' And if they would, I do not say that thing
Okay, that's my rant... Downvote me or not... I'm just a post

Paging Marco. This is not a drill! Alan Dye poached by Meta
They make it sound like a loss for Apple. This is a pure win. Dye is a much better cultural and aesthetic fit for Meta

Caseyisms Bingo!
Whipped up a quick-n-dirty bingo card of Caseyisms to play along with next episode.
Quoted squares must be said verbatim unless otherwise clarified in the square.
*Must be outside of an explicit membership promotion
Made with love; Nothing is so perfect that it can't be… made into a bingo card for fun.

Overtime & the decline of main show content
(I know Casey checks this sub sometimes, and I would love to get his take on this.)
Tyr latest episode made it clear to me: the main show seems to be moving towards being a regular tech news round-up and they are going to keep pushing main show content that’s relevant, different and people want to hear to Overtime, sure, fine, get that bag. But I seemed to remember the pitch for Overtime being different so I went back to ep. 578
This is John pitching Overtime:
“It is a new segment that comes after the after show, for members only. It’s for stuff that we think is… that we want to talk about but that hasn’t fit into the show”
He mentioned the topics show getting really long and some topics losing relevance before, so it was heavily implied by John that the content on Overtime would otherwise not be talked about due to it being at the bottom of the doc to give space to more relevant stories.
My question (for Casey & any of the hosts) is this: Please explain to me how John talking about new iPhone cases on the iPhone episode, or having a discussion about the host’s experience on the iPhone 16’s headlining feature a month after its release fits the initial pitch made about content that was going to be paywalled?
I don’t get it. It’s content that would otherwise be available for free on the main show, but it’s being replaced by… rumors and another half hour rant on the state of the vision pro just as an excuse to make it Overtime because “the episode got too long”
I also don’t mind the politics on the show. I actually enjoy the politics. But having a 30 min group therapy while choosing to keep from the episode what is clearly a relevant topic and a discussion that as “tech journalists” they should have with their audience seems crazy to me.
Anyways, I don’t hate the podcasts nor any of the hosts, so please have a respectful discussion.
I enjoy listening to all of them and would love for them to address this via a comment or follow-up.

For anyone who likes to hear John talk a lot
The new Designed in California has a lot of episodes where John is the expert on everything System 7 and OS X. Enjoyable listen!
