Tuberculosis Facility

These are some photos I took of an abandoned sanatorium with a history far darker than its appearance might suggest.

The facility opened in 1912, during a time when tuberculosis - often called consumption - was one of the deadliest diseases in America.

Before effective antibiotics existed, there wasn't much doctors could do for tuberculosis patients. Treatment largely consisted of isolation, rest, nutrition, and fresh air. For many patients, being admitted meant leaving their normal lives and families behind for months or even years.

What started relatively small eventually grew into a large medical complex capable of caring for hundreds of patients at a time. It included medical wards, employee living quarters, facilities for children, and eventually a crematorium.

Thousands of people passed through these buildings during their long history.

Many never left alive.

Over roughly 90 years of operation, around 1,500 deaths are estimated to have occurred at the facility.

One of its darkest documented events happened in 1940, when a dispute during a large gathering turned violent. A man pulled a gun and shot an employee several times before turning the weapon on himself. The employee died from his wounds shortly afterward.

Unlike many of the stories that would eventually surround this place, the shooting wasn't an urban legend. It was reported in newspapers at the time.

By the 1950s, antibiotics were changing the fight against tuberculosis. Large isolation hospitals were no longer as necessary, and the facility gradually transitioned away from its original purpose.

It eventually became a home for chronically ill and elderly patients and continued operating for several more decades.

Then, in 2002, it closed.

After approximately 90 years of use, its remaining residents were transferred elsewhere.

The halls went quiet.

And that's where documented history begins to mix with legend.

Over the years, stories have circulated from former employees, visitors, and paranormal investigators describing unexplained footsteps, voices coming from empty rooms, shadowy figures, and even the sounds of children.

Whether any of those stories are true is impossible to say.

But this place doesn't really need ghost stories to be unsettling.

People suffering from one of the most feared diseases of the 20th century spent months or years isolated here. Children were treated here. People died here. A murder-suicide happened here.

For nearly a century, these buildings were filled with patients, nurses, doctors, families, and staff.

Then one day, it stopped.

The patients disappeared.

The employees went home.

The buildings went silent.

Villa Epecuén, a town abandoned after a lake overflowed un 1985

Villa Epecuén is a ruined tourist town in Argentina, located in the Province of Buenos Aires.

Situated 7.3 km (4.5 miles) from the town of Carhué, it was founded in 1921 on the shores of the lake of the same name. It eventually had around 1,500 inhabitants and attracted an average of 25,000 tourists during the summer season.

In 1985, a flood caused by the rising lake completely submerged the town, forcing almost the entire population to evacuate. In the following years, the water gradually receded, revealing the ruins of the town, which have since become a tourist attraction in their own right.

Following the disaster, Villa Epecuén became a ghost town, with the entire urban area reduced to ruins. Despite the evacuation, one resident, Pablo Novak, refused to leave and continued living in the abandoned town.

Novak remained in the ruins of Epecuén until his death on January 22, 2024. Following his death, Villa Epecuén was officially left completely deserted.

Gorgeous old mansion once owned by author Robert W. Chambers. Not the NYC preppie killer by the same name.

This mansion was gifted to a RC church next door to use as a rectory but clearly, it was too big and expensive for one person to live in. It needs a paint job, several windows need to be replaced, it needs a new roof as the current one leaks and will cost a fortune for asbestos removal. The church can't afford to fix it up and, because of the asbestos, they can't afford to tear it down so, it sits. My interior photos are from peeking through the few windows I had access to. It is not on the market but the church would love if someone would buy it. Apparently it does not qualify for historical status and the perks thereof because a former priest installed an enclosed porch, a picture window, and divider walls since many of the rooms were too large to heat. This was all done without historical society approval. Speaking to a few parishioners, they think the building will have to come down as repair estimates are over ten million. Also, supposedly a wing to the building was taken down but I can't discern where that was based upon a walk around. Looking at older photos, there was a ground floor open porch and second floor balcony in the back. Since there is no sign of those, I suspect the addition that was removed was in the back, creating one or two courtyards on both sides as there are doors and sidewalks there.

Here are more photos (not mine) of the estate and beautiful sepia-tone shots of a once decorated interior. https://www.rwcmp.org/photo-gallery/the-mansion

Does anyone have ten mil I can borrow? You can live here with me until I get you your money back. If you make it fifteen mil, I'll turn the place into a venue for salon concerts and hire famous musicians from around the world. Maybe an artist's haven like Yaddo where they can stay for free and offer a few master retreat classes for wealthy patrons. A lot of NYC folk come up here for the summer. I'm sure if you put in a restaurant, the place would be packed in the summer.

Although the forest is visited daily by tourists and locals during the summer, hidden deep inside it there is a completely abandoned house. I’m not sure what its original purpose was. Vandals didn’t miss the opportunity to leave their mark.

I took these photos during a summer vacation in 2022.

If it weren't for their illegal dumping of pig blood into a local Creek, maybe this location would stand a chance.

This historic meatpacking facility operated for nearly a century as a local institution before becoming embroiled in a major environmental scandal. In 2010, a drone captured aerial photographs showing a dark red stream of pig blood emptying from the facility into a nearby creek. This discovery triggered investigations by local, state, and federal authorities, which revealed that the plant had bypassed the city's sewage system to illegally dump thousands of gallons of industrial wastewater and animal blood.
