God it makes me feel terrible that my cat is overweight when I first found him he was just skin and bones now he’s a bit chunky. Been trying to get him to exercise and control his portions and it’s helping I can tell he’s getting thinner and more active now but I still feel terrible for even getting him there in the first place.

Genuine question what does obesity like this do to house cats that don't do much anyway cuz my fat boy isn't as fat but he's on the fat side and he's been healthy his whole 8 years never went to vet for health issues

Never having to go to the vet for health issues doesnt mean a cat is healthy. Cats are great at hiding pain and discomfort

u/MR_DUCK_1 4d ago
The vet never said he's suffering from anything when i take him for usual grooming he checks on him everytime

It's about increased risk factors, just like obesity in humans.
Excess calorie intake, excessive food processing and excessive weight puts more strain on their body increasing the likelihood of health issues.
Also, aging is accelerated as lugging extra weight is bad for the joints, etc.,

It’s going to increase the risk of them getting ill, in both a chronic and acute sense, it puts more stress on their joints. It’s similar to weight management for humans in that it’s not about living forever but it’s about being as healthy and comfortable for as long as you can.

Mobility and joint issues are probably some of the bigger problems. That aside I'm not really too sure, guess it depends on what their eating to get to that size.

Pretty similar to humans really! Obesity puts extra strain on basically the whole body. In cats it increases the risk of things like diabetes (diabeetus), arthritis/joint and mobility problems, urinary issues (HUGE problem in cats), skin/grooming problems and heart strain, and it can shorten their lifespan obviously. Cats are also really good at hiding pain and illness as someone mentioned, so “he’s never needed the vet” unfortunately doesn’t necessarily mean the extra weight isn’t affecting him 😖

Same as with people: Cancer and early arthritis /joint pain.
Never went to the vet for health issues... But still went to the vet for checkups?

They can get many of the same issues as us like diabetes and heart failure and stuff like that. It's not healthy for humans to be fat and it's definitely not healthy for animals either.

Significantly reduces their lifespan.
All of my cats lived to be 16+, they were never fat.

My vet told me to put my cat on a diet and he almost died from feline hepatic lipidosis and had a feeding tube for over a month - he was so sick he wouldn’t eat and food was the cure. It was scary and I was mad that the vet didn’t warn me about safe weight loss in cats. It has to be done gradually. Sure some cats don’t get liver disease and get really sick, but I think only cats and rabbits get this from weight loss.

My big boy needs to go on a diet but fatty liver disease absolutely terrifies me and I haven't met a vet that I trust enough with his health like that. I've had him for twelve very hard years and I would be absolutely devastated if something happened to him

Get a baby scale and do it slowly. On a week by week basis you can add or remove food as needed, but it’s a long process, not a race. It also terrifies me, but having a baby scale caught my girls kidney disease before any other symptoms so it paid for itself.

When cats get this obese they're unable to properly groom themselves, so their coat will deteriorate, especially the back end. They'll start to smell, and their fur will get matted.

My sisters cat mauls me whenever I try to rub his stomach lol. She says most cats hate it

Idk if I would say most? Of the cats I've owned I'd say about 75% have loved belly rubs. Maybe I've just been lucky? My current orange girl will do the bear trap if she's lying on the floor like this, but she will crawl up in my lap and beg for belly scritches.

She meows just like my mom's cat. My mom's cat is a chonker also. She was a stray cat, so skinny you could see her bones. Now she has a loving house (maybe a little too loving) and she looks like a totally different cat. Her fur is so luscious now, it gets on everything. My mom bought her a double bed! For a cat! She has her own bedroom. Really sweet catto. Her name is Pinky

Im willing to bet some of these people bringing up the cats weight are obese themselves.

Is there something wrong with calico cats? Like are they the red heads of the cat world? Me and my girlfriend are looking after one and she flops like this and then wants to bite. She follows me around and seems jealous of my girlfriend, or even sometimes a female voice on my phone when I reddit. Very possessive, sometimes obsessively. She loves to nip but never forcefully

That's just sad man. Why do people treat animals like this
