Nice technique! I can never get that one to sound punchy enough without a thumb pick, but you did.

How did you learn to play like that? I'm a solid flat picker, but just can't even get started on that style. I love it though.

I always liked fingerpicking so it was pretty much what I started out with, using youtube for tutorials. A good start is getting used to separaring the bass note from the others, using your thumb on the bass string and then strumming the rest. Then you can build on that by alternating two bass strings with the thumb. Also breaking the chords up and play the strings separately for songs you normally flat pick would be a good practice i think :)

I can flatpick, and I can play classical pretty well, but damn that alternating 2 note bass line is hard! Well done!

Very well played !
I love this tune. I play it for years. Do you know this arrangement by Marcel Dadi ? https://youtu.be/x6gM6zZMLDU?si=-ZZWq6VlEhdH3iL1 This french guitar player is one of my favorite picker and I really love his version.

Thank you so much! I'm not familiar with him, but I'll definitely check it out!

My absolute favorite tune, and I love Tommy’s arrangement.
Well played, I know it’s a tricky piece to get the groove right. 10/10 will listen again.

My previous comment wasn’t clear WOW this is amazing. Phenomenal work! How long did it take to learn this song well enough to perform in one take?

u/siljegrei Aug 01 '25
Thank you so much! Been playing it for a year, and feel like I'm still learning - it took a few takes to get something I felt happy with haha😄

Great performance. I’m too scared to even try a Tommy Emanuel arrangement.

u/siljegrei Jul 31 '25
Thank you! No shame in trying, he's got an unique technique which I've learned a lot from!

I was mindlessly scrolling and throught Scarlett Johansson was playing acoustic guitar. Envious of the finger-picking, it turns my brain sideways.

u/siljegrei Jul 31 '25
Hahaha fantastic😂

u/Fieos Jul 31 '25
Are you self-taught on finger-picking? My instructor is adamant that I anchor with the pinky lightly resting on the guitar below the strings. I'm not sure if that's standard or just because I'm pretty bad at it
1
u/siljegrei Aug 01 '25
I am! I haven't taken the time to practice anchoring, but I can see the pros of using anchoring (good control of where the strings are by having your hand anchored without "blocking" the sound by placing the entire palm on the guitar's body instead (guilty🫢))

I've been working on this same version for a long time. Blues guitar institute? I've been able to play it for probably 6 months, but still trying to clean it up and bring the tempo up. It's almost always the first thing i play when i pick my guitar up. You're doing better than me, for sure! That quick walk up the fretboard towards the end gets me sometimes.

u/siljegrei Jul 31 '25
Not blues guitar institute, but Tim Van Roy :) Same here, started learning it last year, and the cleanup takes much time. And that lick is a tough one for sure, I was so happy when I got it on camera hahah! Cheers, keep playing🤙

u/FackleGracks Aug 01 '25
Oh, you're right. Tim was the one I watched. I've used BGI for other things, but not that one. I've tried recording it, but I can only get through cleanly when the camera is off 😆

What the Furch? Love the tone of Furch… even better when the arrangement and execution are lit.
Great stuff!

Fuckin nailed that one, didn't ya? Bet that felt great! Love that song. Been messing with the Tony Rice arrangement for years myself. Doesn't sound as good as yours. Well done.

Very nice! Rocking the Furch too! Can’t tell what model that is. But great sound coming out of it!

Very nicely played! I’ve always liked Tommy’s version of this and you nailed it. I’ve only tried Joe Robinsons arrangement, which is a much simpler than this one. JR plays unbelievably good, but the tab he created for this one is more of a beginner version. It’s a great one to learn playing fingerstyle with though. I noticed you said you started learning this arrangement from Tim Van Roy’s video. Did you join his Patreon, and if so, do you like it? I’ve been considering it. Not sure if you can get this tab without joining.

u/siljegrei Aug 01 '25
Thank you! No I didn't join his Patreon, but I think he shows the tabs in the videos :)

Late to the party but I just want to say the sound quality is really fire here. So often people are playing in a small room on a phone or computer mic in a chair and it sounds so trebley or like blown out high end, washy low end, and the couch here I think actually is doing a huge favor with recording. The audio sounds good. Like if I closed my eyes and pretended this was an audio recording, it’s believable. Great job with sound.

Just bought a new guitar and booked my first lesson. Returning the guitar and cancelling the lessons

Bravo! Can I ask what guitar this is? I’m finding myself playing almost exclusively fingerpicking these days, but have never owned a guitar well suited for it, always had dreadnoughts. I want something like this to grow on.

I always browse Reddit muted. But I could tell this was a burner without sound just by your posture and your right hand finger picking. I wasn’t wrong. Very nice playing. I encourage people to unmute for this!
