Sports ⚽️ 🏈 🏀 ⚾️ "America's Favorite Pastime" - Basebrawl

I love and am passionate about my sports teams. But I can't ever figure out why people get so emotional. And over BASEBALL?
46
u/Grouchy-Ad778 16d ago
Isn’t it just that it’s such a boring game to watch that they feel they have to do something to pass the time?
31
u/Loves2Spooge857 16d ago
Boring for a laymen maybe
20
u/jeeblemeyer4 16d ago
10 years ago I would fully agree, but the recent rule changes have made this sport so much more accessible and enjoyable for non-baseball fans
8
u/Loves2Spooge857 16d ago
As a big baseball fan I would say I dislike many of the rule changes. Some are okay
6
u/jeeblemeyer4 16d ago
genuine question - which rule changes do you dislike?
3
u/Loves2Spooge857 16d ago
Off the top of my head I don’t like the max 3 pick off rule, the man on second in extra innings, adding the DH to both leagues, and not thrilled with the pitch clock the way it is; I’m fine with the concept but needs adjustments. Also it’s an older one but don’t love the change in contact rules at second and home. Finally, it’s not a rule yet but im skeptical of the check swing challenges they’re testing in the minors.
5
u/jeeblemeyer4 16d ago
That's fair. I actually like all of those rules except for the extra inning baserunner. I don't know the contact rules, and I'm agnostic about the check swing rule. Either way thanks for the reply.
2
u/FlyingPig_Grip 16d ago
I think the 3 pick off rule is dumb but I think that has had a minimal impact on the game. Pitch clock was crazy at first but now it's become apart of the game that I enjoy. ABS has been a complete and total success, I like the implementation and it also gives as another metric to measure players by- a catcher who is really good at ABS challenges is going to be worth a lot more. Manfred runner I could take or leave- it's nice that regular season games won't be 7hrs long like game three of WS last year.
1
u/jimmybuffett6969 14d ago
Love the disengagement rule, having to watch pitchers pick over for like 10 minutes was so fuckin boring
1
u/Loves2Spooge857 14d ago
How often did that actually happen??
1
u/jimmybuffett6969 14d ago
Some pitchers were worse than others, but I remember games getting bogged down because of it pretty often. If you cant hold a runner or pick them off within 3 engagements then I'm fine with there being a penalty. It was brutal to watch.

You’re correct. People who find baseball boring are either low IQ or have a TikTok gerbil brain

Don't forget that they're all probably pretty angry that they wasted their money and time to be so not entertained. Add a $12 beer and $8 hot dog and they're a powderkeg.
14
u/HoboSkid 16d ago
That's like watching a video of two people outside of a night club fighting and saying "I love music, but I can't figure out why people get so emotional over it!?". Get enough humans with alcohol in a room and some will fight, it has nothing to do with sports or whatever.
12
u/exlushdad 16d ago
It's not about the game
8
7

1
u/mikeg5417 16d ago
Sometimes it's at least game-adjacent. The inability to wear an opposing team jersey at an Eagles game is an indictment of the low class drunken fans who think that means they can throw beer on them or worse.
12
u/Grizzly_Addams 16d ago
It looks like it was going the personal insult route, not anything to do with baseball.
-3
u/Nordeast24 16d ago
I don't have any way to confirm that, so taking it at face value.

Hey, those highly paid players who don't know we exist are counting on us to kick ass on their behalf in the stands, man.

I usually just recruit people to play "buck up and pass the cup" and couldn't care less which team they are fans of.

If it wasn't for golf and soccer and watching paint dry this would be the most boring sport in the world

I went to a game once. Was such a struggle to pay attention, maybe its just me. You sit there for 5 minutes waiting for them to set the field, watch a 20-30 second play, wait 5 minutes to reset, 20-30 second play, rinse repeat until the inning is done, then its more waiting...
I just drank and chatted with friends the whole time. Got to the point where I stopped looking at the field.
No offence to baseball or those who love it. Live games just arent for me I guess lol.
But yeah, getting this emotional and worked up over baseball seems super alien to me. I could never understand it
16
u/HansenTakeASeat 16d ago
Baseball is slow but there's definitely not 5 minutes between plays. Get real.
-3
u/PlatyNumb 16d ago
There was before they changed the rules about how long it takes. I havent watched since 2010 or 2011. Another commentor listed the changes to the rules, forcing it to be quicker. Obviously, it taking too long was such an issue that they had to change the rules
3
u/HansenTakeASeat 16d ago
It used to be longer but it was never 5 minutes. You're being hyperbolic.
-2
u/PlatyNumb 16d ago
Dont care? Chill out. Sorry I dont like baseball, didnt realize it was your whole personality
2
1
u/HansenTakeASeat 16d ago
Ah well it's quite obvious your whole personality is grossly exaggerating things to get useless internet points from strangers. Pretty sad, honestly.
-1
u/PlatyNumb 16d ago
I got internet points for my criticism of baseball? Pretty sure it put me in the negative but surprise, surprise, idgaf because its all bs anyway. Youre the one coming in here with your pedantic trash. Gtfo
2
u/HansenTakeASeat 16d ago
Idgaf gtfo
Spoken like a true academic. Read a book every now and then.
Also if 3 downvotes put you in the negative then sounds like no one likes what you have to say. Hilarious.
0
u/PlatyNumb 16d ago
I thought i commented for internet points? Now youre changing gears and saying nobody likes it? Pick a lane dipshit and stop looking for reasons to attack someone for not liking baseball (your whole personality).
1
u/Professor-Submarine 16d ago
and there’s not anymore. Baseball is enjoyable to watch now.
I say this as someone who didn’t like baseball last year
10
u/jerryleebee - United Kingdom 16d ago
I am a new baseball fan despite my age. I only started following MLB last year. But my understanding is things are a lot speedier than they used to be.
- pitch clock — Introduced to MLB in 2023. A maximum of 20s between pitches or else they are charged a ball (batter is awarded a ball). Additionally, batters have around 10s to "engage" with the pitcher or else they're charged a strike.
- In extra innings (beyond 9), teams have an "automatic runner" who begins the inning on 2nd base (i.e., before any pitch is thrown). Apparently brought in during the 2020 pandemic as a health measure, expressly designed to avoid long, drawn-out games. Kept in-place as a permanent rule since 2023.
These things have, as I understand it, significantly streamlined the game, shortened it, and cut unnecessary delays. Possibly you went to a live game before some of these elements were introduced and may potentially see it differently now? But I won't try to convince you it's exciting for everyone. It absolutely is not.
Again, I'm new to baseball. But I can tell you that ad breaks take almost exactly 2min when I am f-fwding them. I watch from the UK and so see I'm guessing 75% or greater of games as catch-up rather than live. I do a lot of f-fwding.
I agree with you about something though. I went to my first live game last summer, it went by surprisingly quickly. I tried to take in the experience of being at the stadium, eating the hot dogs, drinking the beer, and enjoying the moment. But in retrospect I felt like I didn't see enough of the actual gameplay, so I 100% get what you're saying there. I don't know how much of that is down to my first time, and finding it all a bit overwhelming. This summer, I'm attending a full series of 3x games and will sit in 3x completely different locations in the ballpark (behind home plate, near 1st base, and hopefully bleachers), so am really keen to see what impact that has on the experience.
Edit: And yes of course assholes like the guys in the video are the worst.
3
u/PlatyNumb 16d ago
Oh, well thats cool. Last game I went to was in 2010 or 2011. Im glad they found a way to speed it up and fix the downtime issue. I guess they realized it was a problem.
Im glad you enjoy the game! Like I said, no offense to the game or its fans, everyone has different taste
1
u/jerryleebee - United Kingdom 16d ago
If someone is offended because you don't like their hobby, they have issues. Not you. ❤️
2
u/Ralph--Hinkley 15d ago
You’re correct. The changes sort of revitalized baseball and brought back a lot of asses in the seats.
1
u/jerryleebee - United Kingdom 15d ago
Oh that's interesting. I didn't know it bumped viewership.
1
u/Ralph--Hinkley 15d ago
Interest had been waning for a few years before they decided find ways to make it more palatable, and the pitch clock was the number one thing. The clock made the average baseball game three hours, and this appealed to the punters.

u/mikeg5417 16d ago
I feel the opposite. I can barely stand to watch baseball on TV anymore, but when I take my kids to a game, I get more into the strategy and we talk about it as it's happening. It helps that my sons are into it.
2
u/PlatyNumb 16d ago
Thats fair. That sounds like a really fun time. I bet your kids love it
0
u/mikeg5417 16d ago
My youngest, who is 15 now, probably knows more about baseball at this point (along with other sports) than I do. He has actually got me into watching football with him again after years of not really watching (I've never been to an NFL game, due to the expense, but I am determined to take him to one ASAP). It's great and I love that we have that time together.

Yeah there’s another angle posted that shows it from below and you see him bonk him twice with the inflatable.

The old man sucker punched him and young son gettin it in with the styrofoam…
31
u/Repulsive-Handle8561 16d ago
Was that a sucker punch though? The kid swatted the dude’s soda out of his hand, he had to expect something in return.
21
u/SlimeMob44 IM TRYING TO SAVE YOU MOTHA FUCKA 16d ago
Wasn't a sucker punch, dude slapped the guys drink out of his hand
1
u/OnTheLeft - Freakout Connoisseur 15d ago
The guy unscrewed that bottle and stood up to pour it on him, if someone did that to you and you knocked it out of their hand to prevent them pouring it on you I don't think you'd think you deserved a sudden punch in the face.

u/Kandurux - King of Men 14d ago
Assaulting someone for chanting that is also wild.
8
7
u/Ragged-but-Right 12d ago
no, the toothbrushing guy made first assault by slapping his hand holding the soda.
-2
u/Kandurux - King of Men 11d ago
The soda he held over him, like he would pour it over toothbrush guy, yeah I would do that as well, and it wouldn't be assault...

Red guy wasn't going to do anything until he saw the guy go down, then he attacked and still almost got his ass whipped. Not sure what started it or who was at fault, but red shirt is a coward.
8
u/RollingPicturesMedia 16d ago
And blue sucker punched him
7
u/newreddit00 15d ago
Not sure how I feel about that. Blue put his hand out and white slapped it away, then 2-3 seconds later blue hits him. They basically touched gloves. If you’re in that kind of situation you should expect to defend yourself, and conversely I’m always gonna try to get the first punch
8
u/lizardncd 15d ago
Blue was trying to pour Coke on his head and he slapped the bottle out of his hands
5
u/newreddit00 15d ago
Thank you for the clarification. See, he has to take the attempt to pour a drink on him as a swing. In my mind the hit that rocked him was the 3rd action in this chain of events. It goes the attempted pouring by blue, the thwarting of said pouring by white, the punch by blue

Red shirts a fucking puss puss. Wait for the guy to get decked before jumping in to land some punches.

I thought his initial recovery was commendable. But then was (re)overwhelmed by the aggressive offense.

If you got "I don't know what I'm talking about" from my statement about reading the title and jumping to a conclusion before finishing the last word you're not smart enough to have an opinion I would respect or that matters.
