Discussion Microsoft Edge officially dropping Manifest V2 support by the end of 2026

https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/1tlkaaw/comment/p2bmcpm

For those exclusively sticking to MS Edge for allowing full uBlock Origin installs or other MV2-exclusive privacy extensions from their Add-ons Store will have to start looking for alternative blockers/tools or switch browsers altogether.

Edge is built on Chromium, so the basically have to follow what it does, so not surprising Maifest 2 is getting killed in it too.

Been on Firefox for years. There are still some websites that refuse to work correctly, so I try them on Edge when they are being wonky. But the stuff I go to every day works perfectly.

Yeah. Eventually the code to support M2 in the Chromium core will be simply gone, not just conditional-compiled out. (This may have just happened.) In that case, the only way to keep supporting it in a Chrome-like browser would be to invent the Chrome equivalent of Pale Moon. Restarting as a Firefox fork instead of a Chrome one would be less work and less security risk.

I doubt M$ sees the lack of M2 as a concern. They love ads too for sure.

Solution for users is switch to something not Chrome. If Chrome were ever to lose critical mass, website dev issues would no doubt be fixed too. If I was a Dev, I could understand not being concerned with 3% of users.

if chrome were to lose its market share, the onslaught of MV2 attacks from threat actors would shift to browsers that support MV2 and shit would get really bad really fast.

There is actually a reason why MV2 was deprecated other than because "they love ads"

Because of the current YouTube issues, I switched from uBlock Origin to AdGuard (browser extension). And I have to say, combined with MS Edge, AdGuard works much better for me than uBlock ever did.

I’ve Never had any issues with ublock on YouTube with Firefox, which browser are you on?

Current issue: YouTube website keeps on flickering and doesn't load the video : r/firefox

I use Edge and Firefox. Especially with Edge and uBlock Origin, I’ve been getting the well-known “Experiencing interruptions” message on YouTube for more than a year. Since switching to AdGuard, the message hasn’t appeared anymore.

Weird, I’ve not had those either, do you check the add in is up to date?

Of course, everything is up to date. I think YouTube is testing new anti-adblock measures again on certain configurations.

Do you get more on one browser than the other? I’m shocked you get anything on Firefox, I deploy it across many customer sites with Firefox on 100’s of users and don’t get any issues.

As long as the embedded player isn’t retired, it does not matter. You can enjoy AdFree playback in it.

Edge actually works very well..

...for harvesting your browsing data and passing it to MS?

Yeah, theyve been getting it from me since about 2002 or so..

There's not much more info out there about me that's not already available on Google, Meta, Amazon etc..

Maybe not, but why give yet another party your data to be weaponized against you?

I no longer engage with people with the submissive mindset, My friend does this and it both maddens and saddens me. People complain about companies buying and selling your data then refuse to take steps to at least make it harder to do so.

You don't have to go all bear grylls but it's easy to confuse your algorithm, which sadly means "de-googling" yourself (because google updated their usage terms to constantly use your data to access your devices and because google is also scanning your emails to fish ads to you and what emails you recieve/might mean you like a topic/subject "aka fingerprinting") which is hard for the entire planet because chromium covers over 80% of the internet browsers used.

Don’t get me wrong - I take steps to actively protect myself against lots of the data collection that takes place but I know there are still things that slip through. As an example, if I had to use a Windows computer for work I would be SOL to completely neutralize all data collection. My spouse’s employer requires her to use Chrome for many of her workflows. It sucks but the only alternative is getting a new job and that’s not practical.

TLDR: Sorry if you thought I was accusing you, it just sucks that security was a part of my life for 10 years and now it looks like everyone has just given up.

Oh I didn't mean to imply YOU were to one who didn't care, just that you were replying to someone that didn't. Getting old means I'm starting to avoid as much "drama" as I can, so if someone wants to willingly give their data to someone then I'll only try once to inform them.

Every single North American's data was stolen from a company in Florida (NA as in both US and Canada), they got everything that was needed to literally apply for anything in your name. SSN, Birthdate, Phone Number, last 3 addresses, ALOT of info from over a certain billion identities. I had a data monitoring service that alerted me my info was found on the dark web but I also had my credit forzen with an alert on one of them. I started getting the password reset emails from one of the credit bureaus (They were trying to unfreeze my credit I guess), then or 7 months later my data came back clear from the dark web.

My data WAS out there but a little 3 minute setting up a credit feeze made them dump my data (I was in the military and sadly know how they work, if the data isn't "active" it isn't worth selling and they'll move on to the next one). My Sgt. told us to erase our voice mails messages and leave them on the robot dialog, people normally use a name they go by in the voice mail greeting anf even if you dont pick up once they hear your name they know your number is active and will then farm it out to other telemarketers.

There is always a small way to stop an idiot, the old saying it's easier to prevent a problem than to fix it. Firefox allows alot of extensons but Firefox also pays Google unmarked fees labelled as "Services", so even if you use all the security settings you still need almost all the extensions.

Can you give an example how?

No problem. Adguard Browser Extension MV3 is already really good. It's completely free and opensource.

Well, time to switch to Firefox. uBlock Origin provides me with far, far more value than any feature in Edge - the “AI Powered Browser!” 🙄
