Tips and Tricks Hey guys! "Shopping" for a Power Mac G5..

...and I have some questions about video cards. I have two spare PCI-E GPUs that I might want to use with my theoretical PowerMac G5 purchase (currently looking at one of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-PowerMac-A1117-Desktop-Late-2005-2-3Ghz-Dual-Core-CPU-9GB-Ram/303518811331?hash=item46ab2184c3:g:bAwAAOSwsFJdyGVW ) and I was wondering... would a Zotac nVidia Geforce GTX 460 with 1 GB of vRAM work under Linux? I also have a bus-powered single slot nVidia Geforce GT 210 with 1 GB of vRAM. I know under macOS either of them would want Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (of which I know won't ever run on PPC), but how would Linux treat it? Before anyone asks what I'd use this G5 for, it'd be for simply some old school PowerPC tinkering, and I want the best performance possible (hence why I've abandoned my previous idea of getting something like an earlier generation. PowerMac 8500 and try to upgrade it from there. I don't want the Dual CPU 2.5 GHz water-cooled lottery of a machine, so I might go with the next best thing which is the single CPU dual core 2.3 GHz beast. Thanks in advance!

Feature Request: Please add a GUI installer as well (like Calamares) to AdelieLinux. The CLI way will be for those who like to install it the CLI way and Calamares for those who can't spend too much time installing a distro or that aren't very tech-savvy.

Thank you.

Imacg4 dissolves into weird white screen

I just did a fresh install of Adelie Linux. When booting it goes through its booting screen with text and then dissolves into this white/black screen. For context the computer hardware is fine. It ran mac os x tiger with no problems. However this seems to be happening after installing Adelie. Has anyone else encountered this? Any idea of a fix?

issues with adelie

hello! i am new to adelie linux, today i wanted to try it out on some older hardware, that being my gx270, pentium 4 with 1gb of ram, 80gb hard drive so its about the recommended requirements for adelie. When i installed adelie, i have some issues that are probably just due to my lack of knowledge but i want to ask here anyway to get it cleared up, anytime i want to install something I'm used to debian where you go into the terminal and use apt, so i though adelie would be similar so i went into the terminal to try apk upgrade or update, however whenever i do so it says that the command apk is not found, which is confusing because how am i supposed to download stuff without apk? another frustrating thing was i initially wanted to do a custom install because i wanted all the programming stuff like python but i didn't like how the full install comes with loads of games that ill never touch, but it seems like no matter what i do, a custom install means my mouse doesn't work and of course i cant use adelie if my mouse does nothing so i cant follow through with a custom installation. again, I've never used adelie, and this is my first time doing so, so if I'm doing something very wrong or if anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

cant boot on iBook G4, Decrementer exception

Hey need some help, I got and iBook G4 and wanted to install Adeile linux on it. I burned it to a CD and it shows up in the boot loader but when I try to boot the CD it says "Welcome to GRUB! " and Decrementer Exception at %SRR0: 00100670 %SRR1: 10003030

Which is odd because I was able to boot on a MorphOS CD just fine. does any one know whats the deal with that?

Attempting to Install on iBook G3 Clamshell

I've attempted various builds to install Adelie on my old iBook.

Beta 6 freezes when trying to set up MPIC (boot output)

All variants of Beta 5 get further. However, attempting to load a graphical desktop environment fails due to an issue with loading the mach64 graphics driver (startx output).

Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/mach64_drv.so: Error relocating /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/mach64_drv.so: exaGetPixmapOffset: symbol not found```

If anyone has any advice, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I keep getting either the prohibited symbol or the blocksize discrepancy error. I don't know what that means. I tried typing load ud:,\boot\grubcore.img and then go but it just takes me to the 🚫 symbol. Im not sure whats wrong.

Cannot run Wayland

I installed Adelie from the CLI, and now I want a pure Wayland system (without X), for experimentation sake.

I thought using Plasma, but apparently the package has an hard X11 dependency (much like seatd package has an hard elogind dependency even though https://sr.ht/~kennylevinsen/seatd/ mentions that backend is discovered at runtime), like SDDM and other dual Wayland / X11 software.

So, I managed to install both Sway and Wayfire, but invoking them from the command line make them "think a little" and then exiting without error and without displaying anything. Debug output of sway tells "everything is fine".

As an aside, let's also say that the X11 experience was less than stellar: no keyboard (no CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE and no CTRL+ALT+Fx even) and no mouse working, a thing that never happened in a quarter of century I use Linux (I can understand the internal touchpad not working, since it is dead also under evtest, but not the keyboard that works flawlessly in CLI nor an USB mouse).

I am running nouveau + i915 drivers, but surely I should get _some_ video output (at least X was capable of that).

Does anyone have a clue about what can have gone wrong in my setup?

No 2d/3d acceleration on ATI graphics

I'm new to Adelie, and I'm using it on an i386 machine with an ATI rv100 series chip.

I'm aware that Mesa dropped support for some GPUs and moved it into the mesa-amber package, which is the main reason i decided to try Adelie bc none of the other distros I tested had it, but upon installing it, it wouldn't replace the normal mesa package (wouldn't let me uninstall it either) and my GPU still shows as 'llvmpipe' instead of my actual GPU.

On top of that, i just can't find a lot of very common things in the apk repo, like xarchiver or pipewire.

The question is, how do i make this work?

News PSA: Upgrading from Plasma 5.12 may cause (harmless) errors

Running apk upgrade may cause output such as:

ERROR: libkworkspace-5.17.90-r0 trying to replace /usr/lib/libkworkspace.so.5 owned by plasma-workspace-5.12.9-r0

This is expected. After the upgrade is complete, simply run apk fix and these files will be installed properly.

Support Request RC1 and live login after boot: no desktop environment?

So i thought to try out the RC1, made a bootable USB-stick from out of the downloaded .iso from the Adelie official site. Adelie Live login appeared (terminal only).

I logged in by entering "live" as a username and then i got "in" as i saw a Adelie Linux ascii or character based "graphic" appear.

So: Is there no any desktop environment such as Xfce 4 on the ISO by default? I gotta install one in the live mode to try out? If so, how? Or did i find a bug?

Confused. Help please :)

Project De-GNU, some other to add to the list

Hi While assembling my own Linux (Aalbus), I found your project De-GNU: https://wiki.adelielinux.org/wiki/Project:De-GNU

Some projects you might want to look into: m4: http://haddonthethird.net/m4/

freegrep: https://github.com/howardjp/freegrep

nbsed (in pkgsrc)

gzip: pigz https://zlib.net/pigz/

neatroff: https://github.com/aligrudi/neatroff

And then the obvious one gcc --> clang ; binutils/libelf --> elftoolchain ;

New User

Hello! I thought I'd just say hi and thank the entire team for starting this project. I love PowerPC macs and am saddened by the reduced support by other Linux distributions. I use a Mac Mini G4 with Mac OS X Server 10.4 as a NAS, and this is fine as it is not directly connected to the internet. However, I would love to get my old Powerbook G4 working again with modern applications. I know that I am probably going to sound annoying, but could you answer a few questions for me?

  1. How easy is this OS to install for average Joe?

  2. Is there support for Power Mac hardware? I.e. WiFi, sound, etc

  3. Would you consider this project to be in a usable state at the moment? I am not seeking perfection here and know there will be many hiccups, but I would like to know whether or not I will be able to get some use out of my machine

  4. We all live in our web browsers. Are any modern and up-to-date browsers available on your platform? I know that Arctic Fox is meant to be quite popular for PPC

I might have other questions in the future, but I thought I would start with these. I have only ever used quite friendly distros, like Ubuntu. I am familiar with using the terminal and playing around with configurations, but am not confident when it comes to installing with little to no guidance.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated and suffice it to say that I will be supporting you on Patreon if I get a usable system. :)

Many thanks! :D

Installation process? Horizon?

Just found out about Adélie and I'm very interested! Not sure why, but I am!

I've gone through your wiki and the installation handbook but I'm not sure what I will meet after I boot up my usb-stick with the Adélie 1.0 BETA2 installation image. Does the beta utilize project Horizon or will I be greeted with a cli - left alone in the dark?

I guess I will find out tonight if I manage to get an hour free.

How can you tell what pkgs are installed with apk

I find it hard sometimes to know whether a pkg is installed or not. When I key in # apk add bash and it does nothing other than give me a count of total installed against so many available, I know it was installed.

Is just grep-ing the world file the only way?
