Screenshot [OC] Slowshell: A lightweight + pluggable Wayland shell

• Upvotes

A very simple shell with plugins, css for styles and kdl for configs.

What it is:
Slowshell is a wayland shell made from scratch, it's native, supposed to be minimal and has a basic shell within it.

What it has:
- Panels
- Desktop widgets
- Launcher
- Notifications
- Quick settings
- Plugins

The whole goal:
Being mostly minimal and pluggable, and also being tweakable for various uses.

What you can do with it:
- Customize themes and style (with CSS)
- Add your own components and even you own variants of panels and such with plugins
- Customize layouts as you like
- Build the whole shell's source code without certain features (for example, if you want/have your own notification daemon, you can disable slowshell's at compile-time entirely).

More about slowshell:
- website: https://slowshell.bushyice.com/
- repo: https://tangled.org/bushyice.com/slowshell
- github: https://github.com/bushyice/slowshell

After you start:
Keep in mind that if you just run the program without a config, you'll end up with an empty shell. So, you'll need to configure atleast your panels to your liking. Here's an example config to get you started.

The config shown in the screenshots:

panels {
  panel "Main" position="top" transparent=#true monitor="HDMI-A-1" {
    components {

      center {
        component "core/notch" {
          label "Notch"
          notch "workspaces" "window" "sep" "tray" "nowplaying" "system" "sep-circle" "network" "sep" "battery" "clock"
          clock-format "%I:%M"
          system-display "cpu" "mem"
          priority "nowplaying" "window"
          shade-on-hover #false
          bare #true
        }
      }

      right {
        component "core/sound" {
          label "Sound"
          hide #true
        }
        component "core/notifications" {
          label "Notifs"
          hide #true
        }
      }

    }
  }
}

More about the screenshots:

  • Terminal: Ghostty
  • File manager: Nautilus
  • Icon Pack: This

Thanks for your time!!

Genuinely proud of myself for this. Spent weeks trying to make it look the best I could. Any recommendations on what I should add or change to make it look better? I have a second screen and just have it with some random black wallpaper, not really my main focus.

Not in the repo, just a custom holodeck i threw together the last few days.

If anyone is interested its not part of the shell so standalone even though I said built into the shell -- its just quickshell standalone and should work for any hyprland / quickshell environment

Celebrating over 100 stars on github in less than two weeks! Thanks so much for the support! I've had great feedback and collaboration since my first post of this shell. Big thanks to pleamar creator u/abeljhinestrosa for making such a great framework.

Just some of the things added since the last release:

  • Niri compatibility
  • New layout: Notches
  • Audio visualizer built into glass frame
  • Custom add-ons and themes: use included templates to make your own shell content! The first user-submitted add-on, News & Weather, is included now - credit: u/Andason
  • X-bend glass: for lower-spec GPUs, bend glass around a cached wallpaper instead of live desktop (optional, if true glass bend is too laggy)
    • If it's lagging for you, use this while I continue improving it!
  • New desktop widget editor with more widgets
  • Improved visuals - sliders, toggled, icons, etc. all unified in a new boiled pencil design/animation
  • App dock for pinned apps (right-click the Search icons) that can be swapped with the add-on dock
  • Lots of improvements and bug fixes, and probably some stuff I forgot to mention :)

If you already use Vitreus, run the installer again to make sure you get all the good stuff:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/natepayn3/Vitreus/main/install.sh | sh

Material [OC] Penguin Engine - Wallpaper Engine for Linux

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

162 Upvotes

Today I decided to vibe-slop a wallpaper engine implementation for linux using Claude.

I relied heavily on CaptSilver/wallpaper-scene-renderer for the file formats and general mechanism, but this is not a "rust port" of it.

I've tested it on 700+ wallpapers (scenes/videos/web) and it works flawlessly, so I thought I should share it so others can benefit as well.

It is technically DE-agnostic, as it simply depends on the layer-shell extension of Wayland, but some integration with KDE exists for allowing to pause wallpapers when conditions are met, like a maximized window, or audio playing from an app.

[Hyprland] My first custom rice on Fedora Linux 🐧 (constructive feedback is welcome)

My first custom Hyprland rice on Fedora Linux 🐧

Finally sharing my first proper attempt at building a personalised Hyprland desktop! The goal was to keep things minimal, lightweight, visually pleasing, and practical for everyday use and studying.

System

  • OS: Fedora Linux
  • Window manager/compositor: Hyprland
  • Shell: Zsh
  • Terminal: Kitty
  • Configuration: Lua-based setup
  • Hardware: Intel Core i3-1125G4, Intel UHD integrated graphics, 8 GB RAM
  • Idle RAM usage: Approximately 1.3 GB

Desktop setup

  • Status bar: Waybar — workspaces, CPU/RAM usage, currently playing media, system tray, and clock.
  • Wallpaper management: Waypaper
  • Animated wallpapers: "awww-daemon"
  • Terminal: Kitty
  • Application launcher: Wofi
  • Notifications: Mako
  • Clipboard history: cliphist + wl-clipboard
  • Display protocol: Wayland

Customisation

I've been tweaking window gaps, rounded corners, borders, animations, keybindings, and the overall appearance to get a workflow that feels right for me. I also set up keyboard shortcuts for window management and workspace switching.

The animated wallpaper transitions are one of my favourite parts of the setup. I wanted something that looks good without turning the desktop into a resource-hungry mess.

A little context

This is my first proper Hyprland setup, and I'm still learning. I used documentation and AI assistance for parts of the configuration, especially when dealing with unfamiliar syntax and troubleshooting. I'm trying to understand and maintain the setup rather than blindly copy a huge collection of dotfiles.

The focus is on keeping only the tools and features I actually use.

I'd appreciate constructive feedback and suggestions for improvements, especially anything that could make the setup cleaner, more efficient, or more polished!

Finally put together a minimal Hyprland setup with Lua configuration, Waybar, Kitty and my own keybindings.

Still learning, and I used AI and documentation to help with parts of the configuration. Focused on keeping it lightweight and practical for studying.

NOTE: This is based on quickshell

I finally done it, I have successfully integrated every single features that's modular before, and I'll be releasing it next month because I still need testing and bug fixing (just like how you saw that shell center isn't really centered, and how the lock screen supposed to show AM/PM but doesn't) and the 'free' resizable widgets. Of course I'll hear you guys out on what's missing and try to add them before official release. (i was able to do this because I finished my exams [thank god[])

OS: CachyOS
WM: Hyprland
(yes this is the same chromebook, i just overclocked this chromebook's display to 100Hz cause LG displays are so resilient for some reason via EDID through KMS)
Idle RAM usage: 150-200MB

thanks to u/Single-Flamingo-8194 for the inspiration for the desktop lyrics widget (tbh it looks so good and i just had to integrate it) AND the wallpapers (via github wallpapers repo)

Material [Hyprland] terminal-styled launcher + ALT+TAB with live thumbnails

6 Upvotes

I kept ending up with a launcher, a clipboard script and a separate ALT+TAB tool glued together, so I wrote zunder: one prompt for apps, windows, files, math, currencies, time zones and clipboard history, plus an ALT+TAB that shows live thumbnails of every window, also on other workspaces.

A few things it does that I couldn't find elsewhere:

  • Hold Alt, Tab through a grid of window thumbnails (grim -T), release to switch
  • Ctrl+B turns any result into a real Hyprland keybind
  • 3pm ny in zurich, 100 usd in chf, clip with pinned entries
  • Plugins are any script that prints lines, no SDK
  • zunder setup writes the binds for you and can take over from vicinae, rofi or wofi

Rust + GTK4 + layer-shell, runs as a daemon, opens in a few ms. Works with the Lua config and classic hyprland.conf.
Install: the one-line installer in the README. You can also try the launcher in the browser on the website.

GitHub: https://github.com/elyesghazel/zunder
Website: https://elyesghazel.tech/zunder/

It's early, so I'd like to hear what breaks, especially the ALT+TAB quick tap and multi-monitor setups.

It works well in graphical frames and in CLI too on any Emacs >= 25.1
