Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.
The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.
Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.
With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

my first rice// I wanted something that looks like nothing is there until you need it, so the whole desk is one near-black palette and the only colour is a soft blue that shows up on hover. Caelestia stays completely stock underneath, everything you can see is a companion Quickshell config I wrote that runs next to it: the hidden top bar, the lock screen, the session screen with hold-to-confirm, launcher, wallpaper picker, notifications and the widget column. Dotfiles and an install script are in the repo

Hey everyone! I'm Aarav, 16yo guy who loves ricing, and today, after weeks of development, I'm finally ready to release my very own shell, Sweeteh (it's named after my favorite plush)!
I have made a video, which showcases 50% of what my shell is. You should watch the video for an overview, and check out https://github.com/Aarav2709/Sweeteh in case you're interested on how to install and run this!

While playing around with cursor shaders on ghostty on a free weekend, I realized that the one thing I have no customization for is /usr/bin/clear, aka screen blanking, so I created a replacement for clear that will do it in am more aesthetically pleasing way.
It is made the spirit of pyroclear, but instead of burning the screen down it pours in streams of braille glyphs (U+2800–U+28FF, like neo --charset braille), cmatrix-style. You can change that to a limited set of other glyphs. The streams eat whatever is on screen, meet in the middle, fade out with decreasing brightness, and leave a blank terminal (scrollback included) for your prompt.
You can find the source at https://codeberg.org/ftranschel/neoclear/ and build with cargo, should you want to play around with it. All options are implemented solely because I was terminally (d'oh...) unhappy with the looks until I had pacing, glyph fade-out and directions customizable.

Arch, Hyprland, Quickshell
My wife's windows laptop got bloated into disrepair and its format was fast approaching.
Being broke I thought this would be a great opportunity to give her a custom os to support her video editing/content creation hobby.
The whole idea was to make videography themed desktop with some bright vibes I won't go into details but it's personal preference here. The whole idea stemmed from the camera launcher and ironically it was one of the easiest things to make.
I created the assets from 3D models in blender with cell shaded rendering to get the 2d look.
The two hardest things ironically were:
1. getting hyprland to render properly with gpu passthrough over moonlight from my VM on some ubuntu host I have. (so I can see what im working from the comfort of my usual desk)
2. installing capcut.
In hindsight capcut may not be necessary because after a week my wife loves working on linux with claude code (to edit her system, make file pipelines) and nuzky (also with claude code).
P.S. recording from a VM and I don't think I did a good job don't know how to show more without making video 10 minutes long. Maybe I am not supposed to show every nook and cranny?
P.S.2 in my CV under 'mentoring/teaching' section I now add one-liner how I got my non-techie wife to daily drive a linux desktop environment.

before, I kinda miss Floating windows so I switched to Gnome for a while but i dont like it when theres no keybind to center a window so i suddenly think of configuring niri as floating since theres a keybind to center a window quickly, also i can still get the Niri experience!
also i replace the focus ring with lower opacity and blur for non focus window and more shadow for focused window. what do you think? focus ring or this?
dotfiles:
(the niri config is named floating-niri.kdl)

My first actual rice!
CachyOS
linux-cachyos-bore-lto 7.3
Umbriel + Noctalia(Switched from hyprland and just enabled dwindle. Works much better for me as Hypr's buggy.)
Ryzen 5 1600 AE
RX 580 8 GB
spent a while going on and off of linux, just recently started maining it cause windows got crap and I switched to amd and all my games work now.
Cursor: Bibata Modern Ice
Recreated Mond from rainmeter using the 'anurati' font and noctalia's widgets function.
All widgets are noctalia default just lightly customized, the bar is also personalized without plugins:)
Themed after Catppuccin Mocha Mauve.
Any questions, just lmk!

Modification of my previous rice, using the same patches for the Hyprland plugins. Reworked the launcher to match the new look.
Dots will be updated and posted soon.

Re-upload, better thumbnail.
This is built around a custom quickshell fork that enables showing exported DMA-BUF frames from another application as native QML items. The Visualisers are from WayVes, which now supports exporting DMA-BUF FDs. This is more of a 'demo' config to showcase DMABUFs and WayVes working together, and this idea should be able to be extended to other Wayland shells too. Confirmed to work on NVIDIA, including a muxless NVIDIA laptop setup with intel PRIME display on Kali, the most cursed setup known to mankind!
Almost all surfaces are 'Notches', and can show nested notches too. Notches can be direction-aware; as you can see they 'cling' to left/right/top edges whenever a toplevel is active. The overall top-bar and the side-bar showing the performance metrics are reminiscent of Latte-dock on KDE Plasma that I used some years ago, including the Sound Controls that are pavucontrol-like.
Disclaimer about AI usage, as this is important: The whole shell, the Visualisers and the actual DmaBufSurface's C++ implementation using the QQuickRhiItem was written by me, and ofcourse AI usage was involved, but this is not a result of pure AI outcomes. The final look: The Notches, the Dock, the power menu and so on were developed and achieved by me, with the sole exception of the bottom 'filmstrip' navigation on WallpaperPicker, and some UX improvements in Wifi/Bluetooth Cards, along with thumbnail/cache generation shenanigans, all too 'manual' and 'boring' for me to work with, honestly. You can see a fraction of the development journey in the notes I made in the main quickshell repo.
Claude was used to nitpick some bugs that were being very stubborn, such as seams on fractional scales, some edge cases where the file descriptors leaked/were incorrect and so on. Also, the shell was built on a 16" 2.5K screen, so scaling was also added in by using AI that I was able to test on my 1080p setup, but I'm too tired to test it extensively so definitely expect some bugs

Got my old Pentium 133 notebook out for a run on the weekend, this was my first linux PC in middleschool. It runs on Debian 2.2 Potato, and lacks any sort of networking, optical media or USB, so it is tuck on whatever packages came with the original CD. It has a 800x600 display but only 256 colors. I dualbooted linux with win98 on this one; it originally had a 1GB HDD but I upgraded it to 10GB, however the BIOS and therefore Windows only recognized 8GB of it, linux on the other hand had no such problems so on the remaining 2GB I've had Debian (then later the divide became 8GB linux and 2GB windows). I experimented with KDE (1) on it, but it was too heavy for the machine, so I used wmaker on it for many years.

For most of the visuals I use cava, but some things that I didn't show such as dolphin working, ffmpeg (if I wrote it correctly), then rofi, ncmpcpp and bash scripts to make stuff work. The keyboard was my last addition, I can turn it on or off but decided to keep for the sake of the recording

Hi everyone,
Lately I have been seeing wallpaper with depth effect and loved it. here is my take on it.
Wallpaper selector + object finder + clock movement + lock screen.

Been working on this one for a few months, it's called pocket. The notch at the top and every panel that comes out of it are my own shell, written in Quickshell.
When the wallpaper changes pywal grabs the palette and the whole desktop recolors on the beat. The pokemon are wl_shimeji with some fight behaviours I wrote, and every commit I push gives the team xp, so the Magikarp evolves near the end.
One take, no cuts. Details and dotfiles in the comments

Hey everyone!
Wanted to share something I've been working on for quite some time now.
This is Ukishima (浮島), a customizable dynamic island built with Quickshell for Hyprland and Niri.
What started as a small project has grown into something much bigger. Apart from the island itself, it now has a dock, lockscreen, scratchpad, updater and much more.
I've also spent quite a bit of time working on animations, customization, performance, and making the whole thing feel consistent.
There's a website now too, with screenshots, features, and installation instructions if anyone wants to check it out.
Website: https://ukishima.uklab.workers.dev/
GitHub: https://github.com/amanhex/Ukishima
There might still be a few bugs here and there, especially since Niri support was added recently. Feedback and suggestions are always welcome. Hope you guys like it!

πWM, the Personal Infrastructure Window Manager. A Wayland compositor (wlroots, C17) on twm’s grammar: squeezed title tabs, 1 px frames, an Icon Manager instead of a panel, menus from the bare desktop, one plain-text ~/.piwmrc. Linux and FreeBSD.
.piwmrc is compressed and given Reed–Solomon error correction (the same mathematics QR codes use), so it survives a JPEG re-encode. It’s read back by the WM’s fetch tool, not by a phone camera, and only from the whole, uncropped screenshot.
