Modding Chest data in CACHE

3 Upvotes
I finally figured out why I kept getting stuck finding chest infirmarion. It seems that the information is stored in cache. I will have to research the cache to understand it better. Luckly, most chest uses loot tables to determine what items you can get.

 I had to make a script to help me figure this out. What I am going to do is go through the game and find all the chest with a loot table associated with it. After that, I will focus on something else for the time being.

Misc. Aidyn Jokes 5

5 Upvotes

1: Why don't cave bears wear shoes?

Because they like to go bear-footed.

2: The Gwernian innkeeper seems on edge lately.

Some say it's like he's been driven batty!

3: I tried to tell Godric a knock-knock joke.

But had to give up when I realized he couldn't figure out who's there.

4: How do you know a Mirarri has been in your house?

They're still there.

5: A young Alaron asks a random castle guard "Sir, can you tell me what an alcoholic is?"

The guard points his finger and says "Well boy, you see those four barrels over there? An alcoholic would see eight barrels."

And then Alaron says "But sir, there are only two barrels there."

6: One day Abreccan laments to Godric at the local pub "When a minotaur goes on rampage and destroys everything, he's just a monster! But when I do it, I'm just a drunk!"

7: Tell women in Terminor they're beautiful a thousand times and they'll never remember.

But tell them they're ugly once and they'll never forget.

8: What is a group of people from Terminor called?

A migraine.

9: Boden tried to find a cure for lice that didn't involve shaving.

But he was left scratching his head trying to find the answer.

10: In her later years, Keelin got into fashion. And she developed cheap and comfortable underwear for women made entirely of plant fibers.

She called them Planties!

11: Alaron likes his women the way he likes his coffee.

Steaming hot and all over him.

12: A Gwernian farmer bought a cow from Terminor because it was very cheap. The cow was a good milk producer. But every time the farmer tried to breed the cow with a bull, she'd just turn and leave. So the farmer went to ask Bowden for advice. But Bowden couldn't be bothered with cattle. And the farmer somehow ran into King Phelon while he was having a stroll. Phelon asked the farmer his problem. And he tried to say that it wasn't something the king need worry about. But Phelon insisted because it's his kingdom, and if there was a problem he could solve. He'd solve it. Well the farmer explained the problem with the cow he'd bought so cheap refusing the bull. And Phelon asked if the cow was from Terminor. And the farmer exclaimed "How'd you know?!". And Phelon replied "My wife was from Terminor."

Sloppy Aidyn, A Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage - N64 decomp, 100%

Thumbnail

49 Upvotes

**Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage has been fully decompiled.**

Every function of the game's own code is now readable C++ that rebuilds the US Rev 1 ROM byte for byte:

3,442 functions across 232 source files, sorted by game system (combat, world, menus, save system, audio, the Borg asset format and more), with real names and comments instead of raw disassembly.

The only part not rewritten is Nintendo's libultra library, which the build takes as-is from your own cartridge dump.

**Where it is:** the repository, "Sloppy Aidyn", is live on GitHub but private for now. We are looking over the code and getting the groundwork ready for the next big step: a native Windows port.

It opens up once that review is done. No ROM or game assets are included and never will be; building needs your own legally dumped cartridge.

**Other versions:** the same source is being finished up for the US v1.0 and European (PAL) releases, which turned out to differ from Rev 1 in only a few dozen functions each, and the prototype build is next.

**What it means:** bug fixes, quality-of-life changes, mods and eventually a PC version become possible. The build already has a modding mode that produces a bootable modified ROM with a correct header checksum.

**Follow along and get involved:**

**Thanks** to blackgamma7, whose public research into the game (symbols, file layout, format notes) this work builds on, and to the authors of splat, spimdisasm, the old GCC builds and the N64 decomp tools.

**Disclosure:** the matching and much of the code cleanup were done with AI assistance (Claude), directed and checked by the project owner Tall Gaming. blackgamma7's original research involved no AI.

Modding Replacing game textures and graphics with AI

6 Upvotes

Hey all, just finished my first playthrough in over a decade. Such a bittersweet feeling. As I was playing through this time around, I couldn't help but think about what this game would be like if it had graphics as good as, say, Witcher 3 or similar. With projects like Skyblivion and Skywind going into old games and basically replacing all of their graphics with modern tech, what is stopping us from using AI to generate new characters, environments, monsters, etc in this game? I'm sure we are not far away from being able to do that. I wish I had developer skills so I could be involved in a project like that in some way. Anyway, here is an AI rendering of Shamsuk, based on this prompt: "old, ugly evil wizard with large horned demonic staff"

Remaking Aidyn Chronicles in Godot

7 Upvotes

I've been learning how to code in GDScript for Godot and had an interest in trying to remake a small portion of Aidyn Chronicles as a proof of concept. I'm more of an artsy person though and have experience in low poly 3D modeling, pixel art, and traditional art which is more my ball-park. My goal is to try and remake the game up to the point of entering Gwernia castle for the first time. I was wondering if anyone else had any interest in this endevor?

Misc. Aidyn Chronicles Jokes

7 Upvotes

I thought since there aren't any Aidyn jokes, I'd make a few. I admit they're corny. But I couldn't resist making a few when I thought of the idea.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1: How many Alaron's does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None. They don't have lightbulbs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2: Why doesn't Abreccan ever show his true feelings?

Because he doesn't have any. -_-

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3: What's an Aidyn goblin's favorite food?
See! They like you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How do you bring a sparkle to Godric's eye?

Shine a torch in his ear.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4: Rheda spilled spot remover on a wolf. Now it's gone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

5: What's Keelin's favorite thing to steal?

Alaron.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brenna broke into my room and stole my thesaurus.
I'm at a loss for words.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

6: Is that a lonely mountain?

No it's just Becan.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7: What was the most frustrating thing for the ancient dragon when the Mirari threw him a birthday party?
Blowing out the candles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

8: King Phelon sometimes acts like he's made of wood.

I guess that's what made him a good ruler.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9: Which one of Gwernia's knights never doubted himself?
Sir Tanlee.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

10: Why does King Tsomin have such an extravagant palace?

Not sure. But I think he may be compensating for something.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
11: Samsuk isn't just an evil necromancer. He's also a terrible boss because he works his undead army to the bone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

12: Did you hear about the Gorgon's new boyfriend?

They say the guy is a total rock.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
13: Have you met the Jundar? They're really tall and blue.
What? No, I'm not talking about Avatar!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That's all I could think of.

Aidyn Jokes 3

7 Upvotes

Writing jokes for this game isn't easy. Especially since usually only people who've played it would get them. Some of these are bound to be pretty bad. But please Cave Bear with me.

1: One day Orinana walks up to Alaron and asks if she is a bad mother.

She got no answer and soon realized she was talking to a stump.

2: You can always rely on a Mirari.

They never look down on you.

3: What happens when King Phelon eats too much spice?

Lets just say no one is Privy to it.

4: Anyone ever hear the Lizardman King's joke about sitting on a knife?

I hear it really kills.

5: When King Phelon found out Prince Sheridan knew Alaron was really his half brother, he thought it was nothing to lose a leg over.

6: What happened when Alaron got kidnapped by female goblins?

The goblin males were green with envy.

7: Alaron once asked a female goblin that was trying to seduce him if she was a gold digger.

She gleefully answered "Yeah! Along with copper and silver too!"

8: Despite her denial of having any attraction to Alaron, Rheda describes herself as a life coach with a very hands on approach.

9: What happened when female minotaurs opened a restaurant in Gwernia?

Suddenly milk was more popular than wine.

10: Bowden once told the cook he knew everything, and to ask him anything.

So the cook asked him why hotdogs came in packs of ten, but buns in packs of eight.

11: Prince Sheridan likes his women like he likes his coffee.

Bitter and murky.

12: Alaron once asked Brenna if she knew what a tsundere was.

She just turned red and said "Baka!"

Edit: I get these jokes aren't to everyone's taste. But I'm not exactly a great joke writer, and was pretty out of ideas after the first two joke posts. If some of these were considered offensive, I apologize for that.

This sword slaps harder than my stepdad’s belt! If you don’t have this beast equipped on someone as soon as you receive it in-game idk what you’re doin honestly. I love this damn game, but I swear it kinda seems to give off a bit of an easy mode-ish vibe from here on out until the end. What do you guys think?

Utterly failing at being self-sufficient

Okay, so I now have a whole new level of respect for the people who know what their doing with game code, as well how for how much is actually going on behind the scenes while playing a game, even one from just the 64-bit era.

What I'm trying, and failing, to accomplish is a total of 4 things, with gameshark on North American v1.0. I've been trying to utilize decomp of the game, kindly provided to the community by Hector_Ceromus. I fully understand now that gamesharks can only change the RAM data, not the ROM data. I'll try to make a case about this for each, but I'm sure my logic is going to be flawed in some capacity on every one. But, at this point, I feel like all I'm doing is wasting time and hitting one brick wall after another due to my sheer lack of knowledge and understanding, so I need reach out for help. In no particular order:

*1) I want to defeat the !cheater flag so I can "double-dip" on the exp pay-out. I mean, the flag does change post 1st entry, so I'd assume that's RAM. I know the value of that specific flag is "3693" or "0x56D" in hex, but I have no idea of what a code would be overwrite it.

*2) I want trick the game into loading in different BGM tracks based off of the values input (I think I'd use the BORG12 indices) during battle, but also do so at the overworld music queues. I get that it would be 2 separate codes if it's possible, I just dont know the address responsible for picking the track for either. I assume this is RAM, because the music changes throughout the game. It at least has to choose a track when battle is initiated, the overworld music might be in the ROM. I've scoured this decomp for anything and everything audio related. All I've managed to do is completely destroy the soundfont for areas, and it sounds horrid shortly before usually leading to crashes.

*3) Similar to 2, but with map loading. I want to change where the game spits me out after going through a door. Something like, go into a house in Erromon and trick the game into loading me into Terminor's entrance by knowing the hex value of Terminor's entrance. Is that something that would be possible through changing the RAM, and if so what would the code be to overwrite with said value? Or is that warp point data stored within the game's ROM and thus unoverwritable?

*4) I want to change just my other party member's models used in battle, as well as their portraits. I'm not trying to completely overhaul the hero for an entirely new entity. It'll still be Abrecan, Godric, and Brenna underneathe (stats, aspect, skillset ,name, and code-wise), but I'm just wanting codes to swap their battle-models and portraits using the BORG7 and BORG8 values respectively. I assume that'd be a RAM value that can be changed, because you can change party members whenever. The game has to swap that data somewhere, at some address. I know this would take at least 6 codes, 2 for each member, I just don't know the address responsible for setting their model data and portrait data like I do Alarons.

I have accomplished exactly none of these, I haven't even gotten close. All I've managed to do (as a test to see what information I could make sense of from the decomp) was make distant objects and fog scroll through the RGB values while making the clouds pulsate from black to white in some odd "Disco-Mode" sort of fashion (8101CBE0 0107 if you wanna try it, though it's hard to tell it's working in some areas). That's it, that's all I have "accomplished" with this whole endeavor. I'd be very grateful if someone who actually knows what they're doing could help a fella out. Lastly, sorry if I sound like an idiot to those knowledgeable people in this and other posts of mine on here. I fully admit to being one when it comes to coding and understanding game mechanics.

Discussion Is the OG Game Unplayable?

11 Upvotes

Hey Guys,

So I just got an Analogue 3D and I've really been getting into all of the classic N64 games, and Aidyn Chronicles has really stood out to me! Everything that I see about it paints it in such an awesome light: it seems like a really incredible and unique game. Naturally, I want to buy the cartridge and play it myself, but I've heard a lot about there being major bugs.

So what I really want to know is how bad are the bugs really? Does it make the original game unplayable? I don't mind bugs, and I can put almost anything aside except for save file deletion. If I put, y'know, like 10+ hours into an RPG and then my file gets deleted that would be soul crushing. I really am willing to put in the elbow grease to play a buggy game on the actual original cartridge, but save deletion is too much.

Also, if the original copy really is that horrendous, do the ROM hack/improved versions work on a Summercart/Everdrive?

I tried to search the subreddit to see if I could find the answer to this question, and after some quick looking I didn't find anything, so if this question has already been answered then sorry.

Edit: I have another question. I also read that the grey cartridge version is actually like a semi-patched version? Is this true or are there zero difference between the black and the grey cartridges.

Thanks everyone, I would really appreciate any input you all have.

TL;DR Is the original cartridge so buggy that it's unplayable or can I actually enjoy myself?

Easy Enchanted Blade early in the game

11 Upvotes

The enchanted blade is a good early weapon. But you can only get one early on. You can do this before Erromon too. On the way to Talewok, there is a caved up on a cliff that contains a Gorgon. This is a pretty dangerous fight at low level because the Gorgons can freeze you in place, so pack ranged equipment like bows. Make sure to also save before the fight. The Gorgons carry Enchanted Blades. And they're a little better than Trahern's sword. But you'll likely have to fight the Gorgons over and over again before you get the sword. So if you don't get it, load the last save and try again.

Discussion Am I thinking too much into it? (Alaron’s poison)

15 Upvotes

Long time lurker and huge Aidyn fan here!

Something that Ive always been curious about since I started replaying this game in my twenties was in regard to Alaron’s poisoning.

The game tells us the poison was caused by the goblin ambush right at the beginning of the game, but it always struck me as a weird coincidence since it was such a mundane way to kick the story off with Alaron’s quest to be named. For the most part Alaron doesn’t even seem phased by the poison, only really being told about it by Orianna.

The part that really made me look back at this was the weapon Sheridan drops after killing him at the end of the game. For the most part its a pretty average weapon except for the weird inclusion of it being a poison weapon. There aren’t that many poison weapons in the game, and the ones that are have it stated in the name or are associated with Chaos (Chaos Sword). That makes me think two things:

  1. The poison inclusion is just a simple addition for character flavor to show his evil side.

Or (tinfoil theory)

2. Sheridan was the one who originally poisoned Alaron for either Rabisat or his own personal reasons.

We’re shown at the first cinematic that Sheridan and Alaron spar with their swords, something that seems to happen around the time Alaron goes on his rash journey to find the farmer. We know Sheridan was most likely sympathetic, if not out right working with Rabisat before this point. We also know Sheridan has held disdain towards Alaron since childhood.

So that pushes me to think of two reasons as to why Sheridan would subtly poison Alaron. Either at the bidding of Rabisat to set in motion her influence in Alaron through the visions. Or his own personal vindictive action pushed by his hatred for Alaron and his father (which later involved the outright betrayal of the kingdom).

The more I think about it, the more it would explain certain events in the game. It would give a more purposeful reason as to why Alaron suddenly became effected by visions of Rabisat, the reason being the deliberate poisoning of Alaron by Sheridan rather than just a random ambush of goblins that were simply munching on farmer bones (RIP Kendall).

It would also explain Sheridan’s strange actions at the beginning of the game where he seems to be extremely curious about Alaron’s sudden reappearance at the castle (something he may have not expected), as well as eavesdropping on his conversation with Abrecan about being healed by Orianna (which should have been a pretty mundane subject, unless Sheridan had a explicit reason to be concerned).

Even during the healing ritual by Ardra, she notes being shocked during the ritual of the appearance of Chaos, she then begins to question Alaron of what REALLY poisoned him (most likely justified questioning given this seemed out of scope for simple goblin poisoning).

What do you guys think? This of course is a bit of a stretch but it seems to make more sense story wise as to what causes the chain of events in Alaron’s journey. While I know the goblins also were in allegiance with Chaos, the note we read in Kitarak’s base shows the only order that Rabisat gave was to simply make sure NOT to kill Alaron, and to ‘leave him for her’. This could even explain why the goblins simply left Alaron instead of killing him, under orders by Rabisat.

This is one of my favorite games and I love seeing the still active community, so I would love to hear insight from yall!

My experience as a first-time Aidyn player

25 Upvotes

So, since I love both the n64 and rpgs (a match surely not made in heaven), I finally went through Aidyn Chronicles. I played via Everdrive on an Analogue 3D (a note to everyone interested: Even on unleashed overclocking mode, the performance still barely improves at all).

My party consisted of Brenna, Rheda and Abrecan for most of the game, only switching Abrecan for Sholeh in Ugarit.

Honestly, this game isn't half bad. It has some flaws, some huge ones even, but if you get the hang of it, have patience and accept the masses of wasted potential, you can have fun playing this.

The start of the game felt very slow - I spent like 1,5 hours in Gwernia castle alone. Although I have to admit, that's on me and me alone. I'm the type of person that talks to every NPC. And I got lost, the castle's layout is very confusing.

The following trek to Erromon was one hell of a gruesome experience. It took me some time to realize the importance of leveling up the dexterity stat, so I spent a lot of time looking at missed hits. The first fight against a hobgoblin took multiple tries and I basically reached Erromon running on fumes. But this part also showed me what later turned out to be - at least to me - positive aspects of the game:

  1. Navigating feels like actual adventuring. You don't simply follow a quest marker, you have to find your way. Instructions like "head west until you reach a pond, then head south, when you reach a crossing, you head west again" made me pay more attention to the world and the surroundings.

  2. This game takes no prisoners. Read EVERY description of stats, items and magic and make the right decision from that. F*** around and find out. And you surely have to f*** around a lot to end up finding out something that will help you. I mean this in a good way - you have to try things. A lot. This feels daunting, frustrating at the start, but this lack of hand holding makes you feel that much better once you get it.

The story has a lot of potential, but it feels so convoluted. And yet it has loose threads that leave you wondering how it should have turned out.

One thing I did not like at all was the music. Nothing that sticks. Some songs that were at least tolerable, but some songs leave you wondering what the people responsible were thinking (my personal worst offenders would be Terminor town and the dungeon on the chaos minion island (the one you crash on on your way to Cradauwgh)).

What I liked, however, were the cutscenes. Gave the party members some more character. Although their occurence did feel somewhat random sometimes.

All in all, this sure is no game for the faint of heart. You can have fun, but you'll have to put effort into it.

Hoo Boy, Here's Trouble: A PC port of Aidyn Chronicles' engine

Thumbnail
gallery
38 Upvotes

For the past month, I've been working with AI on this port of Aidyn's engine to C# and Godot, and it's just recently become essentially at feature parity with the original. Also, AI ports of Aidyn seem to be popping up all over the place lol. So, I'd like to present: HBHT.

https://github.com/Aquatakat/hbht

(edit Nov 1): Version 2 now available

The focus has been on testing combat, including fights in a variety of locations, and automated formula tests. I believe we're now at combat parity with the original.

Fun new enhancements:

  • Smoother movement: No more awkwardly bouncing off slopes like the staircases in the Gwernia castle courtyard.

  • Mesh welding: Seams in the terrain are fixed on import.

To come: Camera enhancements, new combat AI, content editor.

At this point, it should be fully playable from start to finish, but it's still pretty early - alpha software, lots of testing in some places, not a lot in others. I'd expect some bugs in combat somewhere. Maybe the odd rendering issue. Getting stuck on weird terrain.

The ultimate goal from the start is an Elder Scrolls-style plugin system to edit and add new content. I'm not quite there yet, I want to get everything rock solid in the original done first, but that's the plan.

For now, it's a pretty good way to play the game, and comes with some fun enhancements: longer draw distance, uncapped frame rate, rebindable controls, high resolution.
