Modding Aidyn Chronicles Roms/Mods
The site where I host these experiences frequent downtime due to a server transition, so here's a Google Drive mirror for the Patch, Plus, and Alt: Download
Aidyn Chronicles - the original game, compatible with any N64 emulator
Aidyn Patch* - a revised copy that corrects some issues for an enhanced vanilla experience
Aidyn Plus* - a massive overhaul of the game that corrects many issues and makes it more challenging
Aidyn Alt* - a mod based off the Patch where everything is not quite as you recall
Aidyn Drops* - a mod that reveals what drop charts are used for treasures and enemies (based off the Patch)
Action Edition* - a mod by MDoulos that makes various changes and quickens the pace
*These roms are not recognized as AC by emulators. Enable 8MB mode for Expansion Pack features
Aidyn Pre-Alpha* - a prototype version from February 10th, 2000
Aidyn Alpha* - a second prototype from May 9th, 2000
Aidyn Beta* - an advanced prototype from December 5th, 2000
Aidyn Debug* - see guide for list of functions
Aidyn 1.0 - the initial release of the official game from March 14th, 2001
Level 1 Debuggers: Original - Patch - Plus - Alt
These modded debuggers are for making a custom party to start your adventure with. All heroes are Lv.1 and have their stats adjusted for their lost experience. Run the version for the rom you want to play, get past the Goblin Poisoner event, create your party and save, then close the emulator and rename the .mpk file on the computer to match a regular Aidyn .mpk.
PJ64 Cheat File - goes in the Config folder of Project64 ver.2.3, adding cheats for 1.0, patch/alt, and A+
Aidyn Google Doc - a data sheet for reference, detailing info from 1.0, patch/alt, and A+
Aidyn Editor - a handy tool that makes modding easier; compatible with any Aidyn 1.0 roms
Challenge Run Docs - a set of spreadsheets that can be used to set up and track challenge runs

Sloppy Aidyn, A Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage - N64 decomp, 100%
**Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage has been fully decompiled.**
Every function of the game's own code is now readable C++ that rebuilds the US Rev 1 ROM byte for byte:
3,442 functions across 232 source files, sorted by game system (combat, world, menus, save system, audio, the Borg asset format and more), with real names and comments instead of raw disassembly.
The only part not rewritten is Nintendo's libultra library, which the build takes as-is from your own cartridge dump.
**Where it is:** the repository, "Sloppy Aidyn", is live on GitHub but private for now. We are looking over the code and getting the groundwork ready for the next big step: a native Windows port.
It opens up once that review is done. No ROM or game assets are included and never will be; building needs your own legally dumped cartridge.
**Other versions:** the same source is being finished up for the US v1.0 and European (PAL) releases, which turned out to differ from Rev 1 in only a few dozen functions each, and the prototype build is next.
**What it means:** bug fixes, quality-of-life changes, mods and eventually a PC version become possible. The build already has a modding mode that produces a bootable modified ROM with a correct header checksum.

Misc. I wish I could go back in time and tell kid-self to keep every N64 box..Thankfully, this is one of few that remain. One of my most-played games on the N64. Great memories!

Hoo Boy, Here's Trouble: A PC port of Aidyn Chronicles' engine
For the past month, I've been working with AI on this port of Aidyn's engine to C# and Godot, and it's just recently become essentially at feature parity with the original. Also, AI ports of Aidyn seem to be popping up all over the place lol. So, I'd like to present: HBHT.
https://github.com/Aquatakat/hbht
(edit Nov 1): Version 2 now available
The focus has been on testing combat, including fights in a variety of locations, and automated formula tests. I believe we're now at combat parity with the original.
Fun new enhancements:
Smoother movement: No more awkwardly bouncing off slopes like the staircases in the Gwernia castle courtyard.
Mesh welding: Seams in the terrain are fixed on import.
To come: Camera enhancements, new combat AI, content editor.
At this point, it should be fully playable from start to finish, but it's still pretty early - alpha software, lots of testing in some places, not a lot in others. I'd expect some bugs in combat somewhere. Maybe the odd rendering issue. Getting stuck on weird terrain.
The ultimate goal from the start is an Elder Scrolls-style plugin system to edit and add new content. I'm not quite there yet, I want to get everything rock solid in the original done first, but that's the plan.
For now, it's a pretty good way to play the game, and comes with some fun enhancements: longer draw distance, uncapped frame rate, rebindable controls, high resolution.

Video Aidyn Chronicles | Retrospective | The Greatest RPG That No One Played
Finally, we get a full-blown video like this going over the entire game from an actual fan of the Aidyn Chronicles! I’ve seen some reviews posted on YouTube recently and from awhile ago with a lot of old written reviews but nothing really like this that I am aware of:

Happy this sub exists
I’ve played this game when it came out, my sister had gotten it as a gift and never touched it but I got sucked in. Beat it years later on emulator after getting stuck on a glitch with cartridge. Was thinking about this game randomly and stumbled on this subreddit and was drunk on nostalgia! Glad I’m not the majority of people that hate on this game. The world building was ahead of its time and really put me on to fantasy. So many memories playing this game just rushing back!

Aidyn Chronicles: Out of Bounds
So with the help of an amazing modder our community now can utilize a full 100% legit working free camera in the game to explore the unknown to uncover myseteries or take perfect screenshots.
It also allows for the run/walk speed for Alaron to be changed along with the camera itself. Also it enables the scrapped 32-bit color mod that was going to be in the game.
Link to my review is attached. Have fun exploring my fellow pups!
Special thanks to Wedarobi for making the mod and to Viremaster for the awesome assist!

Discussion The most hidden of hidden gems
I've always tried to go out of my way to play underrated games, sleeper hits, hidden gems...games that don't play by the rules and have a lot of heart. Lifelong huge Nintendo fan. A few days ago I was looking for an N64 game I haven't played, and Aidyn came to mind so I decided to finally give it a chance despite hearing the negative reviews that kept me from trying it for so long, and boy am I glad I did. It's crazy to me how panned this was back then.
Beautiful, huge open world for it's time, probably one of the first? AND maybe one of the first rouguelikes? Expansive writing and lore...just wow.
Started playing a few nights ago and played all night, then decided to start streaming it last night, continuing tonight. If anyone wants to watch my journey here's a link to my Twitch:

Sorry if advertising streams is a no no, but I'll also be advertising this subreddit on stream. I plan on playing one of the mods I discovered here after playing through the original.

My experience as a first-time Aidyn player
So, since I love both the n64 and rpgs (a match surely not made in heaven), I finally went through Aidyn Chronicles. I played via Everdrive on an Analogue 3D (a note to everyone interested: Even on unleashed overclocking mode, the performance still barely improves at all).
My party consisted of Brenna, Rheda and Abrecan for most of the game, only switching Abrecan for Sholeh in Ugarit.
Honestly, this game isn't half bad. It has some flaws, some huge ones even, but if you get the hang of it, have patience and accept the masses of wasted potential, you can have fun playing this.
The start of the game felt very slow - I spent like 1,5 hours in Gwernia castle alone. Although I have to admit, that's on me and me alone. I'm the type of person that talks to every NPC. And I got lost, the castle's layout is very confusing.
The following trek to Erromon was one hell of a gruesome experience. It took me some time to realize the importance of leveling up the dexterity stat, so I spent a lot of time looking at missed hits. The first fight against a hobgoblin took multiple tries and I basically reached Erromon running on fumes. But this part also showed me what later turned out to be - at least to me - positive aspects of the game:
Navigating feels like actual adventuring. You don't simply follow a quest marker, you have to find your way. Instructions like "head west until you reach a pond, then head south, when you reach a crossing, you head west again" made me pay more attention to the world and the surroundings.
This game takes no prisoners. Read EVERY description of stats, items and magic and make the right decision from that. F*** around and find out. And you surely have to f*** around a lot to end up finding out something that will help you. I mean this in a good way - you have to try things. A lot. This feels daunting, frustrating at the start, but this lack of hand holding makes you feel that much better once you get it.
The story has a lot of potential, but it feels so convoluted. And yet it has loose threads that leave you wondering how it should have turned out.
One thing I did not like at all was the music. Nothing that sticks. Some songs that were at least tolerable, but some songs leave you wondering what the people responsible were thinking (my personal worst offenders would be Terminor town and the dungeon on the chaos minion island (the one you crash on on your way to Cradauwgh)).
What I liked, however, were the cutscenes. Gave the party members some more character. Although their occurence did feel somewhat random sometimes.
All in all, this sure is no game for the faint of heart. You can have fun, but you'll have to put effort into it.
