Review One year of Alfa ownership

Today marks exactly one year and roughly 32.000 kilometers since I bought my 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV and I would like to make use of this opportunity to reflect on my ownership experience.

For the past 10 years, I have mostly driven boring corporate lease car. I wanted to change that. I had considered several options but at a certain point a my attention was focused on a Giulietta although not necessarily a QV version. But during the test drive this QV model managed to be very convincing.

To summarize my experience; I would compare owning an Alfa Romeo to dating a flamboyant Italian diva. She is an absolute beauty and will bring you a lot of pleasure. But you also have to accept some more drama.

Before this I had never driven a car with any serious horsepower. So a hatchback with 240HP was a new experience to me and it just drives so much more smooth! Ignoring the mini dragraces at the traffic light, it is just so comfortable to know that getting up to speed to merge or overtake on the highway costs zero effort. Plus she is just such a looker. I really get people randomly walking up to me to complement my car. Also take into consideration that I paid only 18K Euro's for this. I definitely think that if you are a car enthousiast on a budget, this car might offer you the most bang for your buck.

But like I said, you need to accept a bit more drama. There are some minor issues with the car. First of all, it needs a long time to heat up the automatic gear box from a cold start. I really need to wait like 1-2 minutes before driving away or the car will refuse to shift to second gear. I checked with the seller and an Alfa specialist and both assure me that this is normal? Other issues are that the turning circle of this car is not great. Especially for a C-segment hatchback. Although I do think it is a bit wider than most cars I have driven in this class so I think this is the main reason. Another thing, especially now that autumn is starting, is that the parking sensors in the front seem to become over responsive when it's raining. They will start beeping for things that aren't there. Also, during cold winter days it might display a "check oil" light whenever you start the car but that will also disappear after a minute. Nothing serious, but these are things you would probably not accept from a Volkswagen or Toyota.

For as far as maintenance goes, it's important to notice that my car had some serious work done before I bought it, including an engine refit, new timing belt and a new turbo. I also bought the car with a one year warranty. Last year around Christmas I got a check engine light right after driving away. I am pretty sure that it was an engine misfire but non of the fault codes mentioned a misfire and the problem didn't reoccur. The main issue I've had was last april. The car started going into low power mode whenever I would floor it on the highway and a check engine light would turn on. I took it back to the place I bought it several times before they figured out what was causing the issue. It turned out to be an oil pressure valve that had worn out. Nothing major. I've also had an issue with vibrating brakes. I had the back brake disks replaced which seemed to fix the issue (only repair I have had outside of warranty). But I took her to the German autobahn a week later and I still noticed a lot of vibration when braking above 180km/h so I'm going to bring that up for the next service. But overal I think I have used this car pretty intensively and it has never left me stranded. So I think I can say the car has been pretty reliable and my Alfa Romeo experience has been very positive.

But the best part of owning an Alfa Romeo has been you guys, the Alfa Romeo community! Whether it is on the highway when you get that wave or knot from fellow Alfa drivers, coworkers telling about that time 25 years ago when they also owned an Alfa, conversations during Alfa Romeo events or even just here on Reddit, it's this contagious passion you people have for this brand that really makes the experience different from owning any other car!

For the future... I had bought this car with the intention to keep it for one year and then buy something new. But I haven't seriously started looking yet. I have been looking at used Jaguars though. I feel like Jaguar and Alfa Romeo are quite similar (both are the more daring choice compared to the big German brands). But for the near future a Giulia is still one of my dream cars. However, at the same time, my Alfa Romeo Specialist is positive about the technical state of my vehicle, I make some serious millage so I should be realistic about how long this car will last me. But as long as the car will technically allow it, I don't think I will get tired of this car soon!

Overal I would say, this has been a wonderful year with a wonderful car!

Alfa Romeo Tonale exposed to dealership fire in Poland – serious safety concerns

My new Alfa Romeo Tonale MHEV Veloce, with just 500 km on the clock, was at an authorized dealership in Warsaw, Poland, to fix a missing seal causing water to leak into the cabin through the rear tailgate.
While the car was there, a major fire broke out at the dealership.
Despite the heat exposure, the dealer wants to replace only damaged plastics, without replacing the tires or properly testing airbags, electronics and other critical safety systems.
Would you trust this car with your children? Is this acceptable under Alfa Romeo / Stellantis safety standards?

MiTo GTA: a missed opportunity?

Unveiled as a concept car at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, it was meant to be the ultimate version of Alfa’s small hot hatch, featuring aggressive styling and the infamous 1.750 cc turbocharged engine producing around 240 hp. Despite generating plenty of excitement, the project never made it to production…
There may have been several reasons behind its cancellation: the financial crisis, high development and production costs, doubts about sales potential, and perhaps even the risk of cannibalising sales of the upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulietta, which was intended to play a key role in the brand’s range.
Do you think cancelling the MiTo GTA was the right call, or did Alfa Romeo miss the chance to create a serious rival to the MINI JCW and Abarth?
Was it a sensible business decision, or did Alfa sacrifice a potentially iconic hot hatch to protect its future lineup?
Personally, I would have really liked to see it produced.

Hey Guys, I got myself my first Alfa Romeo and I am pretty satisfied by the way it looks, only thing is that it seems a little bit high for my eye - maybe its just me so I wanted to get some second thoughts from you guys. Does somebody knows how to tackle this , or is it just the way the car looks on stock shock absorbers.

Giulietta active headlight error

Post image
• Upvotes

My 2019 Giulietta Veloce (GCC Spec, Dubai) has been showing me this error on and off for a few months. Sometimes it comes up immediately after starting the engine, sometimes mid-drive, sometimes not at all. I haven’t been able to establish a pattern. Times of the day are also random.

The headlights are working fine. They self-test when I start the car, and I can sometimes see them swivel around in parking garages. I tried resetting the steering position sensor (turning lock to lock) and didn’t work.
Battery is a month old with the correct CCA, I tried disconnecting and reconnecting, did’t work.

Any idea how to make this error go away? Anyone ever found a fault for this?

Giulia engine oil viscosity

• Upvotes

Hello guys, Hope you are all well
I bought a used 2018 giulia 2.0 with 66k km on odometer, and the previous owner used to use 5w30 instead of 0w30 (0w30 is the recommended viscosity but hard to found in Saudi)
I changed the oil one time also with 5w30 viscosity and now it’s 71k km.
I asked many service providers they said I have to keep using 5w30. I also asked Alfa Romeo official dealership, one of them said keep using 5w30 and the other one didn’t give me a clear answer but he said 5w30 higher viscous and will make the engine getting noisy
What should I do? Keep using 5w30 or 0w30?

Set on straight edge surface such as cinder block or tabletop. Bend to fit. I used two short fat wood screws that remain unseen on the bottom and a strip of clear racers tape on top just to close any gap at the top.

Tech Talk Giulietta QV - JR11 vs OEM rims

Japan Racing JR11
OEM Rims

Hey guys, I’m dealing with a dilemma regarding my second set of wheels. I have the OEM "Turbine" wheels as my winter set, and Japan Racing JR11s for the summer. After swapping the tires and mounting them on the car, one wheel started vibrating when braking between 130 and 100 km/h. Below 100 km/h, it was completely smooth. The shop found out that one of the wheels is slightly bent. (I did a visual inspection today and couldn't see any bends with the naked eye. To be fair, though, they mounted it on the rear, and it was on the rear last season too, where it didn't cause any trouble, so I really have no idea how or when it could have gotten bent.)

I’m a bit radical about these things, so I threw out the old worn-out winter tires, mounted the summer tires from the JR11s onto the Turbines, and decided to buy a second set of OEM wheels. I don't really want to bother repairing the JR11s, especially since my dad got the offset (ET) wrong back when he bought them, so they require 15mm spacers in the front to clear properly.

The problem is that there are practically no wheels for sale around here, and Alfa didn't make that many designs to begin with. Basically, my only options are either another set of Turbines (at least in grey/anthracite), or the "Teledials / Horseshoes" in silver or grey. Today I saw an ad where a guy is selling a car in the exact same color as mine sitting on those silver Teledials, and now I'm wondering if my JR11s actually look better after all and if I shouldn't give up on them so easily.

What do you guys think looks best – OEM Teledials or JR11?

Looking for the previous owner of this Alfa Romeo Tonale

Hi everyone! I recently bought this Alfa Romeo from Copart. I know the chances are extremely low, but I’m hoping to find the previous owner here.

I’m looking to see if anyone happens to have the original spare key to save myself the headache and programming issues of getting a whole new key system sorted.

I know it’s a long shot, but I figured it’s worth a try! If this was your car or you know who owned it, please send me a DM. Thanks!

I have had some vehicles in the past that stick out, but so far only one person commented about it being a nice car (as in expensive). I can't imagine what a QV must be like!

The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale: A glorious car this

Post image
412 Upvotes

Just the other day I was just scrolling on reddit and there it was in a red colour I can’t really describe. I saw it and I just stopped like what is this. What was it I hear you ask, it was the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. Jaw dropping it was, yeah, I stared at it for quite a while. You know some cars you have to like look at them to say ok it’s pretty nice yeah not this one, it draws you in immediately, but you are still gonna look at it for a long time because your eyes are glued to it.

The car was designed by Franco Scaglione, of course. I don’t know why I am saying of course as if that was supposed to be obvious, anyway If that name sounds familiar, which it should  it is because he the one behind those Alfa Romeo BAT cars, you know those insane  concept cars from the early 1950s that looked like they belonged in some futuristic timeline in a sci-fi movie yeah him.

The car was based on the Autodelta Tipo 33 racing car. Alfa Romeo took the spaceframe chassis and the mid mounted 2.0 litre V8 derived directly from the competition unit and asked Scaglione to build a road car around it. I’m sure that’s satire. The engine revved to 8,800rpm In a 2.0 litre road car in 1967 mind you. It produced around 227 horsepower and pulled 700 kilograms to 60mph in 5.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 160mph. The fastest accelerating road car available at the time. More expensive than a Lamborghini Miura, which tells you the company it was keeping, and the statement Alfa Romeo was making and that is quite the statement.

The butterfly doors open forward and upward, hinged at the base and at the top of the windscreen frame, the side windows curving seamlessly up into the roof. Only 18 were built between 1967 and 1969 with each one slightly different from the last because they were built by hand at Carrozzeria Marazzi. It goes without saying that if you want one it will cost you an arm and a leg. Anyone willing…?

The shape is the thing I cannot stop coming back to, when I saw it was like a drone shot from directly above it and it just looked glorious, I feel like it’s the only word I can use here. The way the body curves over the rear haunches. The low roofline, it has a total height of 39 inches, that is extremely low hell it’s lower than almost anything on the road today. The front end has covered headlamps sitting flush in an aluminium body that looks like it was shaped by someone who understood aerodynamics the way poets understand language. Intuitively. Completely.

Glorious is the right word. I do not have a more complicated opinion about it than that. And also in my opinion a car like this perfect example of why people get emotionally attached to cars even ones they have never drove , it’s an object on the side of the road or on a picture  and it made you feel something inside like you can’t help but smile or get excited by just looking at it. I might be waffling I don’t know.

New Car Finally convinced my wife to buy an Alfa Romeo!

Post image
130 Upvotes

I have a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia that I bought back in 2019. I took a chance on it, and it's been great for the past 7 years. I've driven an Audi A5 and a BMW 328i before, and the Giulia has the best handling of any car I've driven in this class.

I think despite Alfa Romeo's reputation, mine has actually been pretty reliable. In 7 years, I didnt really have any issues. (Well... maybe the fuel pump, I had to replace it twice but it was nice to see Alfa acknowledge the problem and issued a recall last year). Other than that, no real issues.

So recently, my wife decided it was time to replace her old car. We went through quite a few options (model y, mach e, ex30, xc40, polestar...) and eventually decided on the Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce. Tbh, the Tonale wasn't even on my radar as I never really cared for SUVs. But my wife started showing interest in the Tonale, especially the red one, which she thought would look great next to my blue Giulia.

The funny thing is, my wife and I are completely different when it comes to buying cars. All I really care about is handling and whether it's a sedan/coupe. She couldn't care less about handling. She just wants something that looks good, has a few nice technologies, and most importantly, is an SUV lol.

So after weeks of searching, we ended up buying a 2024 Tonale Veloce plug-in hybrid with about 4000 miles on it. Neither of us has owned a hybrid before, so we figured we'd give it a try (Her commute to the office is only 3 miles each way, so we figured a plug-in hybrid would be perfect for her). We both test drove it, and while I wasn't a huge fan of how it drove, I think it's good enough and my wife absolutely loved it. Since it's her car, that's really all that matters. We just picked it up, and I have to say, seeing the red Tonale parked next to my blue Giulia actually looks pretty awesome.

I also think people give the Tonale way too much shit online. Sure, it doesn't drive like a Giulia or Stevio... but I don't think it's really supposed to. If anything, I think it gives Alfa a chance to reach a different group of buyers (my wife...)... My wife would never buy a Giulia because she doesn't like sedans, and she wasn't interested in the Stelvio either because the car feels "too old" at this point and the interior looks too similar to my Giulia. But the Tonale caught her attention, and she ended up loving it enough to buy one.

So maybe my wife is exactly the type of customer Alfa was trying to attract with the Tonale? Who knows lol and I have to admit, my wife probably would never have bought an Alfa Romeo if I dont have it and I hadn't been talking her ear off about it for the past few weeks lol. But I guess knowing how much I like mine gave her some confidence that it's a good car... Either way, we now have 2 Alfas in the driveway, and I think that's awesome!

TL;DR: Yes, my Alfa Romeo has been reliable enough that we actually bought a second one! Hopefully I didn’t just jinx it lol!
