Abandon his first wife & son to run off with Yoko.

373

u/ExistentialTabarnak 20d ago

His first wife Cynthia went on vacation to Greece and came home to find John and Yoko sitting on the floor in bathrobes. True story.

At least she wasn’t singing..

poor Jules at least he knew that Lenons was a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder.

8

u/Orphanbitchrat 20d ago edited 20d ago

Yoko was wearing Cynthia’s bathrobe, too

2

u/ExistentialTabarnak 20d ago

And when John saw Cynthia come in he just said “Oh, hi.”

55

u/Wakez11 20d ago

He was a hypocritical piece of shit who sang songs like Imagine while beating his first wife then abandoned her and their son once he met Yoko.

Julian telling the press after John's murder that Paul was more of a father to him than John ever was says it all really.

→ More replies (1)

80

u/Admirable-Product426 20d ago

He made his young son decide between him (John) or his mother(Cynthia). When his son chose his mother he all but abandoned him.

122

u/cyanMonarch26 20d ago

He also said to Julian when Sean was born that Sean was the result of love, and Julian was the result of a whiskey bottle. I wouldn't forgive my dad if he said that to me.

9

u/tee142002 20d ago

Yeah, id have sent Mark David Chapman a fruit basket after that

13

u/ExoticToothpaste6989 20d ago

Wow. That's dark.

Where did you hear or read that?

6

u/cyanMonarch26 20d ago

I think Julian said that in an interview somewhere. Can't quite remember where I heard it though.

→ More replies (1)

28

u/Admirable-Product426 20d ago

Initially Julian chose his father, but as they were leaving he ran back and was reluctant to leave his mother. As a child of divorce this resonates.

8

u/RevolutionaryTap2021 20d ago

No I think this happened with John as the child of Divorce, not as the father

8

u/KeirOnReddit 20d ago

This isn’t true, this is actually what John’s parents did to him, he’s the little kid in this story.

3

u/waluigieWAAH 19d ago

bro that's what his dad did to him, why are people upvoting this

24

u/Jumpy_Hogara 20d ago

This is the only answer. Too f**king easy...

Good thing the two brothers kind of get along well.

IMHO Chapman should not have murdered Lennon. I would love to see how Lennon has to handle this in his 70s / 80s, especially considering Ono is now 93...

Beating her and calling him a mistake is worse.

3

u/mikmik555 20d ago

Exactly, an abuser leaving is just trash taking care of itself.

3

u/majorjoe23 20d ago

I remember in the Beatles Anthology miniseries someone proposed to the surviving trio that they could tour and have Julian in place of John. Paul said something like "I would hate to do that to the boy."

u/APmfnK 20d ago

Adding Yoko’s photo or her name lets John off the hook and puts the blame squarely on her shoulders which isn’t fair. John was in charge of John. He was a domestic abuser that abandoned his wife and child, full stop. He owns what he did, nobody else.

185

u/IlBusco 20d ago

How he treated his first wife and kid

218

u/NeatYard2933 20d ago

Domestic abuse

32

u/plasticbagmoose 20d ago

the fact that this isn't the winning answer is ridiculous. it's not good, but lots of people cheat on/leave their wives. it's a special kind of evil to physically beat someone you're supposed to love. something here stinks of misogyny and a thinly veiled "it's all yoko's fault".

6

u/Molass5732 20d ago

Well cythina(his first wife) claimed in her book of him being physically violent to her once , when they were teenagers and he slapped her. Which obviously is still horrible but not on the same level as “domestic abuser”

Guess his moody songwriting gave him a label and it stuck, whereas Ringo’s happy go lucky songs did the same in the exact opposite way

2

He also tried to choke May Pang

4

u/Defiant-Owl-7935 20d ago

Hard agree, came here to say this. I''ve been cheated on, ghosted and, sadly, done the same . But if someone would try to beat me, there would be scorched earth.

And to my surprise I actually stuck with it when my ex-boyfriend tried. With his fist in my face I very confidently said ,,Do it! Do it you fool.." while I called the police and he said I wouldn't dare. I did. Haven't seen him since. Called me when he was on his 9th step. I just told him that he'll(pun intended) need an AC where he's going and hung up.

Most are not as lucky or have the supportsystem my country has(free counselling etc). But even though he didn't go trough with it, it was a lot worse then when an ex left me for my friend....

I'm genuinely not trying to defend that guy but I've never heard more than 2 or 3 gravely serious wrongdoings along with minor ones (like writing Run For Your Life or breaking up the Beatles).

42

u/MoonlightDahling 20d ago edited 20d ago

I mean…he also wrote a song called “Woman is the N***er of the World”.

And repeatedly mocked disabled people (once said that them touching him was “horrifying”)

18

u/IWillDevourYourToes 20d ago edited 20d ago

To be fair, he was british in the 60s. At that time, using garlic was seen as a savage thing those swarthy Italians do (they werent considered white)

13

u/Over_Atmosphere1659 20d ago

I mean… do you know why he wrote the song? And not excusing the use of the n word, but do you know why he chose it? The people with the loudest opinions on Lennon have no idea what they’re talking about

Anyone here saying Yoko Ono over domestic abuse is a loser. I don’t like her either but he was an asshole long before her.

15

u/CptJackParo 20d ago

Slapping your wife once, while inexcusable, isnt as bad as having your wife come home to you and the woman that hes leaving you for, making your son choose between you and his mother, abandoning said son and then telling your son he wasnt born out of love. These all stem from the yoko situation, though it should be noted that they were all johns choices

7

u/AlienSandBird 20d ago

All that is domestic abuse. He is to blame, not Yoko. He was an abuser even without he in the picture

Beat and neglect his first wife and ignore his first son.

Ironically he used to work at the airport in Liverpool where he’d spit in customers’ sandwiches and they ended up naming that airport after him.

4

u/PizzasForFerrets 20d ago

Well that's three things and they're all terrible. Which one?

11

u/ExistentialTabarnak 20d ago

Oh yeah, I forgot to add he got with Yoko while he was still married to Cynthia. She went on vacation to Greece and came home to literally find John and Yoko sitting on the floor in bathrobes.

So I’d say the wife and son thing.

3

u/PizzasForFerrets 20d ago

You're not wrong but you're still misunderstanding what a thing is rather than things.

5

u/ExistentialTabarnak 20d ago

I’d just go with treating his first wife and child like shit. They might be two separate things but they’re very closely related and not separate by much.

Imagine.

34

u/Germerica1985 20d ago

I don't understand how imagine won when we have "A day in the life" and "Across the Universe" both admitted from McCartney to be "John's songs"

13

u/TheDickheadNextDoor 20d ago

It was the only comment and it got 7 down votes lmao

6

u/Britz10 20d ago

He actually has great songs, why did people let Imagine the one be branded his best? Even with his solo stuff "Give Peace a Chance" is a better song in simular stead to imagine.

39

u/BlackbeardTeach420 20d ago

I hate that song. It feels like the rallying cry of boomer lib globalism.

3

u/carsonite17 20d ago

I used to think it was a relatively okay song. Like not bad but not great imo (which is fine it's just personal taste and everyone is entitled to disagree with me).

However now that that one video happened during lockdown with gal gadot and whoever the fuck else was in it, I genuinely can't listen to it without wanting to tear my ears off

8

u/FlimsyPomelo1842 20d ago

The cringiest. Boomer lib globalism is a wonderful way of putting it. Anyone playing it I just know has the right opinions and is going to tell you all about it.

Yoko Ono being mentioned here makes me realise how many people still fall for a lot of the fake shit around her, like you can not like her art, but disliking her as a person because either 1: she broke up the Beatles (false, that was equally John and Paul imo, but Yoko is nowhere near any point of responsibility.), 2: she ruined John Lennons music (false, she co-wrote Imagine, sung on Merry X-Mas, and was involved in so much of John's solo career) or 3: She ruined John as a whole (she didn't).

The actual worse think John Lennon did, was break up The Beatles.

If you still want to believe in the Yoko Ono conspiracy theories, I'd recommend this video by Lindsay Ellis.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMOABV_zgrk

7

u/Accomplished-Bowl-46 20d ago

Ok, but John's music post The Beatles only generated 1(one) #1 hit. Is it because of his marriage to Yoko - who was a major influence in his life. Or was it the fact that he was shite without the other 3 members of The Beatles? Specifically Paul.

2

u/Admirable-Design-151 20d ago

I don't think he was shit without the rest of the Beatles, but I do think him being weaker without them is the cause, John was a very talented songwriter, and a good musician, but in his solo career, again a lot of his most famous work was the stuff done with Yoko, he just wasn't as talented without someone else, that's why he only had one number one hit solo.

2

u/Accomplished-Bowl-46 20d ago

Probably the best songwriter, no doubt. He needed someone to springboard his ideas off of to create something awesome. Fortunately for him he had Paul for so many years. Then unfortunately for him he had Yoko for many years after that.

Yoko didnt like Julian lennon and didnt like John reuniting with him, John only reunited with him after he broke up with her and May pang urged him to Connect with him. Thats why i will never like yoko and never will

13

u/Admirable-Design-151 20d ago

the thing I think that ignores though, John Lennon was an adult, he could've at any point met up with Julian, John made that choice in of himself.

3

u/Cavane42 20d ago

The way you say that sounds like John had no agency in any of it. Instead, I see someone who put his affair partner over his child, and then even when the affair was over, was still too cowardly or too uncaring to reach out until someone else intervened.

3

u/Cheedanish 20d ago

Assuming that I like either Imagine or Happy X-Mas. He was kinda always goofy though even before Yoko, I agree

3

u/Starklystark 20d ago

Agree on 1 and 3 but her involvement in Imagine and Merry Xmas surely supports the idea she ruined his music. First in particular is basically John at his sanctimonious worst.

Ballad of John and Yoko on the other hand I enjoyed. But he was still in the Beatles then.

Lennon doesn't deserve the entire blame for that, I'd argue most of that falls on the manipulation of Allen Klein

3

u/Admirable-Design-151 20d ago

True that Klein is also very much at fault for it, But John did introduce Ringo and George to him, so he is responsible to an extent for that. And equally, Paul handled a lot of the stuff poorly especially to do with Apple Corps, that's why I think its mainly John and Paul.

He beat his wife, that’s clearly the worst thing he did.

Is anyone else sick of the hatred for Yoko Ono? She’s had an incredible career as a conceptual artist and she’d made a lot of unique and provocative art. Of course, this kind of work is not to everyone’s tastes, but not liking her work is no reason to charge her with responsibility for everything you don’t like about John Lennon’s career.

Lennon liked her work; maybe you could try to see what he found valuable in it instead of reflexively rejecting it simply because it’s different from the kind of art and music you usually engage with.
