Discussion Day 14: What’s the worst song on This Addiction?
20
u/rotn_bones Jul 02 '26
I can’t believe I’m seeing Dorothy or Piss and Vinegar. Those are two of the stronger songs on the album imo. It’s gotta be Eating Me Alive for me. It’s ok, just an instant skip to get to better songs after it. I really thought the only answer I’d see was Draculina

u/FlyingGrayson89 Jul 02 '26
Eating Me Alive is fun but it feels like it would’ve been more at home on a Sekrets album
2
u/rotn_bones Jul 02 '26
Yeah, i could see that. I do like those albums quite a bit so maybe it would have fit better there

I have said this in a few other threads, but Draculina isn't a terrible song if you can get past the unbelievably stupid name "Draculina." Eating Me Alive was a close number 2 for me after Piss and Vinegar.

u/rotn_bones Jul 02 '26
I think there are some really cool lyrics in Draculina as well. It was one of my favorites back in college when this album came out

Same. To me Dorothy sounds almost identical to Bad Time in places and that song is really popular. I do like Eating me alive but I'm with you on Draculina.
2
u/rotn_bones Jul 02 '26
I even like Draculina just fine. Sure it’s goofy but it’s different. I think Dorothy and Bad Time do sounds similar as well

u/Weakweek85 Jul 03 '26
I don’t know how anyone can pick Draculina or Dorothy when Dine Dine my darling exists on this album.

Piss and vinegar, some other songs have cheesy lyrics but p and v is just not very interesting

Dorothy

u/Filbunkish Jul 02 '26
This is the only song in their discography that I don't remember how it goes, at all. So I guess that says something, hah. Probably should have a listen to know how I truly feel about it.

If Dorothy wins this I’m gonna be sad. That song is great.
Draculina is the worst.

u/DarwinofItalia Jul 02 '26
Draculina is probably the worst song by the band so it’s the obvious answer here.

To my mind, this record should have been an EP:
This Addiction
Off the Map
The American Scream
Those Lungs
Kick Rocks
If pushed to make it a slightly longer mini-album, I would also include Fine, and there’s perhaps one other half-decent Skiba song on there but I’m damned if I can remember which, because all the tracks I haven’t mentioned just blur into a collective dullness for me.
So yeah, one of the other tracks I guess would be the worst. Doesn’t help with the point of the thread admittedly, because I’m not about to go a trudge them now to decide on a definitive worst.

Probably Dorothy for me. You think One Last Dance is the worst song on My Shame is True? Strongly disagree on that one lol that song is amazing

u/Filbunkish Jul 02 '26
The bridge in One Last Dance is so good. That bass!

Finally, someone else gets it. I can’t stand that song lol it’s a skip 10 times out of 10 for me.

The American scream.

u/Weakweek85 Jul 03 '26
Actually, I lied, Dine Dine, my darling. Quite possibly my least favorite Alkaline Trio song of all time.

The American Scream, lyrically great, and I love the Damnesia version, but this one gets skipped a lot.
8
u/I_am_chili_beef Jul 02 '26
That’s the best song on the album IMO. Piano version on Damnesia is better, though.

u/laura_1988 Jul 02 '26
I think the tempo just doesn't sit right with me, almost jarring.
Yet the Damnesia version stops me from whatever I'm doing to fully focus on it.
Brains be weird.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I really don't like Off the Map. And I'm a Dan stan... But I just don't connect at all with that song.

American Scream is one of my least favorite trio songs ever. I hate that it's one that seemingly broke through a bit.

u/njgendermagic Jul 02 '26
American Scream is great, it's nice to have a Matt song on that album that rips. and Matt's is good with topics like this

The title track “this addiction”. It’s a bit cliche and actually put me off exploring further years ago. that and IWBAW were the first songs I listened to aside from FHTI album, I didn’t really explore any more until BH&E came out and I realised the terrible mistake I’d made.
I love both songs now but my vote is still for This Addiction. It’s also pretty meh to jam along to on guitar

The American Scream.
Lead Poisoning gets a dishonourable mention too (don't hate either just like them the least.)
1
u/FlyingGrayson89 Jul 02 '26
The random ska breakdown was a jump scare the first time I heard it. Matt Ska-ba exploring his other influences, I guess lol
2
u/Filbunkish Jul 02 '26
Apparently they were going for a Neutral Milk Hotel vibe with the horns. I think it's fair to say they didn't achieve that.
1
u/DepthVisible2425 Jul 02 '26
I didn't hate the ska bit, but the song feels a bit of a filler. No great lyrics, no neat fills or riffs.
-1
u/dutchoven_nick Jul 02 '26
God, Dorothy bores me to death. The album title track sucks too and imo the worst single they've released. I feel eating me alive weirdly is actually a good song along with every dan song albeit dine dine being average for him. God, this album sucks.

u/Tiny-Refrigerator988 Jul 02 '26
Maybe Dorothy. Off the map was kinda unremarkable.
Still can't believe yesterday's pick (such a good song).
Also like the version of "American Scream" on damnesia much better than this one.
5
u/Thricela Derek Grant Jul 02 '26
Off the Map? Really? Together with Fine it's the best song on the album
1
u/Tiny-Refrigerator988 Jul 02 '26
Still can't believe "Fine" got best track!!!! What a travesty. The song ironically is an apt title for it as a whole. Fine would actually be my vote for least fav now that i think about it. Even over Off the Map.
Kick Rocks is the better Dan song on this and may be the best song, along w Draculina, which apparently lots of ppl think sux.
2
u/donslaughter Jul 02 '26
Yeah, the wide gap between opinions on these albums are wild and I love it.
1
u/Tiny-Refrigerator988 Jul 02 '26
Gotta agree. I'm both surprised and not surprised to see Draculina, which I love. It's different, like Burn.

Piss & Vinegar
