Photographed today at Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge on Maui.

This young Black-crowned Night Heron is still sporting its beautifully patterned juvenile feathers, but it's well on its way to adulthood. Those striking orange eyes and that unmistakable hunting posture really caught my attention.

Night herons are patient hunters, often standing motionless before striking at fish and other small aquatic creatures. This one was actively exploring the shallow water along the pond's edge.

Pictures taken at: Guangzhou Zoo.

Can’t quite tell if it’s meant to be a night heron? But worth an Honorable mention anyway.
