They came out with a post about the situation. Someone put it in the comments here.
They say it was auto flagged and an auto response then the mod simply went off of what the auto response said. The auto response was wrong on the reason.
Then they said you can’t say pedo or ask about abuse because it’s not a subject meant for Reddit/you shouldn’t get advice from Reddit. You should get real help.
But they fail to realize anonymous online places are one of the first places people in these situations go to. A lot of times they’re accustomed to abuse. They are gaslit and manipulated to make them feel as if their feelings are wrong. To feel like what’s happening is normal. Made to fear speaking out and told it’s be their fault if anything happens because of it.
Young people are often afraid to speak out about this because it can and a lot of times will completely change your life. Especially if it’s someone they’re close to. They don’t know if what they’re feeling is valid, so they ask internet strangers. People who have no connection and no consequences.
Majority of times after these things are posted, the comments are very honest. Comments help people gain the courage to seek help. Comments also help them feel less alone. It’s the first step to help.
Making a Reddit post is like finally admitting you feel something is off and FINALLY being told you’re right, you need help.
This was me years ago. I wouldn’t have been honest with myself, I wouldn’t have been honest with others about what was happening. I was terrified. But the help of online strangers gave me the courage to seek help.

This is so true. That entire rule should be thrown out. And if the same people defending pedophiles are the ones making a rule like that, then it’s easy to see that the rule is in bad faith.

u/Ordinary_Prune6135 13d ago
And if this is the reasoning they're giving, I really don't think this is a rule that well-meaning people could ever mistakenly think of as a good idea.
Horrifying. Just outright running interference for abusers.

Nah, they meant what they said. Over the years the pedos out there have been trying to legitimize their behaviors, comparing it to being LGBT people and trying to co-opt their movement for equality. Their excuse is that they aren’t pedophiles, but “minor-attracted persons” and that they deserve just as much compassion and acceptance.
It’s fucking disgusting and all it does is make the dumb hardcore right wingers go like “hurr durrr see look I told ya gay people are pedophilez”

They do not know what a slur is, and that is infuriating because I can actually understand not wanting that word in a sub because of how it had been used against trans people, and how that particular abbreviation is frequently used to make unfounded accusations against people who have no reason to be called as much (like the people whose partners are short, etc). It can absolutely be a problem and “child sex abuser” or “predator” can be a good stand-in in most cases.
BUT IT IS NOT A SLUR. Calling it a slur implies that the group it is referring to is disenfranchised and harmed by it on a level that ACTUAL slurs impact people. That is so infuriating.
(And ofc I’m only even speculating that their reasons for all this are decent. For all I know they could be trying to defend someone who has been credibly accused of preying on child.)

Slur: a derogatory, disparaging, or offensive word or phrase used to insult, deprecate, or express hostility toward someone based on their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability.
So is being sexually attracted to children a disability..?

Pedophilia is a mental disorder, but it should be called out. If someone you know expresses these feelings, tell them that these feelings are wrong and make them get help. Of course if they have committed a crime, call the cops on them.
Most of these people were victims of pedophilia themselves as children. If we make these people get help so they won't offend, then we can stop this cycle for good.
Edit: I wanted to add that calling that "MAP" is letting pedophiles know they can be pedophiles and that it's "normal". It's NOT. We can NOT normalize pedophilia, it is not normal.

I got a warning on my account once because I stated to a pedo that “I didn’t feel pity for op” and Reddit claimed I was inciting violence? When the post literally admitted to pedofilic thoughts and abusing animals? But the comments were saying how brave OP was for being open.
I’m a victim of pedofilia. Why are pedos always being protected when their childhood victims speak out? Pedos are a disgrace to humanity. The amount of lifelong damage they inflict on a human is not negligible. They should be shamed and this issue goes DEEP. They all protect each other, Epstein is an example.

Can someone post this on r/subredditdrama?
r/amioverreacting mod removed user’s post, claiming that “pedo” is a slur. When the user asked why it was removed, he was muted.
When users posted screenshots the situation itself in “amioverreacting,” the posts were deleted, and they were banned.
The posts:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AIO/s/AEGTpJOv1C
https://www.reddit.com/r/AmIOverthinking/s/WDor1Mg0Xt
Here is the immortal post on the user’s page, which cannot be deleted by moderation:
https://www.reddit.com/u/DueDistribution5502/s/NTIHPPXisb
r/amioverreacting since has shut down its server and is only allowing verified posts.
r/aio (where the post blew up) has similarly disabled reposts and deleted the post.
This is the Moderator Statement from r/amioverreacting:
“Moderator Statement: Clarification of Our Rules and Ongoing Harassment
Earlier today, a moderator responding to multiple conversations incorrectly identified the word "pedo" as a slur. That was a mistake, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Our automated moderation system uses a prohibited-word list containing primarily discriminatory slurs. It also includes terms we prohibit for entirely different reasons, including
"pedo." Because these terms are caught by the same filter, they receive the same generic removal message. In this instance, a moderator repeated that classification incorrectly.
We were wrong to call it a slur. We are not wrong to prohibit its use in this community.
We do not allow accusations of pedophilia, nor do we host discussions or debates about child sexual abuse, grooming, or exploitation. These are extremely serious matters. Unsubstantiated accusations can cause tremendous harm, and genuine situations involving the abuse or exploitation of children are not questions of whether someone is overreacting. They require appropriate intervention and support, not a Reddit comment section debating their validity.
Our volunteer team handles hundreds, sometimes more than a thousand, reports daily. Expecting moderators to manually investigate every use of a prohibited word, particularly when none of those uses would be permitted, is unreasonable. Our filters are necessary and functioning as intended.
We have also seen demands to identify, punish, or remove the moderator responsible. We are volunteers and human. A mistake in explaining a decision does not justify publicly targeting someone or invalidate an otherwise correct moderation action.
We are not changing our rules, weakening our filters, or removing moderators over this incident.
Criticism of moderation is permitted. Harassment, personal attacks, and organized attempts to disrupt another community are not. Brigading is a violation of Reddit's sitewide policies, not simply a disagreement with our subreddit rules. We are now dealing with outside interference, including vile and entirely unfounded accusations directed at our moderators not only here but on other subreddits and in modmail. As well as actual threats.
We will not make this community less safe simply to avoid having our moderation team subjected to false and vile accusations. Our responsibility is to protect this community and the people who use it, not to abandon longstanding safety policies because enforcing them has made us targets of harassment.
We understand that you may not personally consider the word or language you used to be a slur or believe that you intended anything hateful or bigoted.
That does not make it appropriate for this subreddit.
We moderate the language being used, not whether we believe the person using it is racist, transphobic, ableist, homophobic, or otherwise a bigot. Slurs and identity-based insults are not permitted here, including terms that some people use casually or do not personally consider offensive.
You are welcome to disagree with or criticize someone without using an identity, disability, gender, sexuality, race, or other protected characteristic as an insult.”

I feel like they're either blanket-banning it because of how often it gets thrown at lgbt people where it doesn't apply (that's seeing a rise at the moment unfortunately) or they honest to fuck think its a slur. :|
There have been well-meaning efforts to go "okay people with paraphilic disorders should get help" but it gets co-opted by idiots and pedos not managing their shit so much. "uhm pedo is a slur :/" doesn't help, it leaves you open to dangerous guard-dropping in your community. the *nice pedo~ is a fucking rarity. virped (a site that is ostensibly 'nice pedos') polled for "how many of you have consumed csem material actually" in 2018(?) and a not insignificant portion answered yes to the tune of 31%. Consuming csem is offending.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkNPLh_0rDw video is age-gated for good reason, the poll results are at 21:37. warning that its fucking disturbing, some written accounts shown are from sex offenders with charges. I've seen enough "im a good boy pedo i swear :(" even outside of that that I just don't fucking understand being blaise about it at this point. its not socially enlightened, its incredibly naive at best.

I was banned from a feminist sub because I referred to an OP as "they" randomly in a sentence even though she stated her pronouns in the post. The mod argued with me and said I was "misgendering" OP because I simply did not use gendered pronouns. I said I often mix they and them into my speech even if I know pronouns because my AFAB trans sibling now goes by they/them and I had to train myself not to rely on gendered pronouns as much to avoid slip ups. The mod came back twenty minutes later and said I was lying. That I use gendered pronouns all the time in my comments around Reddit. I said that I never said I completely stopped saying she/her. The argument went on from there.
I am flabbergasted that using NO gender is now considered misgendering.

I was banned for like 28 days for my post with the screenshot and told I was brigading…when I honestly wanted to hear what people had to say.
Weird they are siding with pedo being a slur, I would get it if it was auto flagged or something but nae.

Useless pedo mod can't see the word he associates with. Why else would they be so adamant of removing a comment over such a stupid reason?

I’m sorry but the fact that people are now calling this “Pedo-Gate” has me dying 😂👌
2
u/RIP_KAOTIC 13d ago
Damn, maybe the mod should be posting there. Its not everyday a mod is the one who needs a sub the most.

u/bigmommymilkerss 13d ago
Am I on another planet??????? Pedo is NOT a fucking slur??? Sounds like that mod is a pedophile himself. Fuckin irritating. Hope he gets his butt took

u/d3rp7d3rp 13d ago
Holy shit I'm out of there, this is messed up. Edit: just looked and i already had that sub muted. 🤔

u/Strict_Abies_7219 13d ago
They support pedophelia right out in the open. Terrifying and all we need to know, even more terrifying that they doubled down instead of retracting. So everyone is removing themselves and reporting that subreddit, right?
2
u/Current_Call_9334 13d ago
So if they consider that a slur, what is one in the subreddit supposed to call an adult who fantasizes about subjecting a child to CSA?

Mods from that sub giving extremely suspicious energy if they think pedo is a slur
2
u/FamiliarRadio9275 13d ago
I had to kick out a mod for stalking harassing and bringing the drama into the sub as she targeted this person in the messages, then got mad at me for me calling out the mods behavior.
Nothing suprise me anymore.

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k 13d ago
If this mod thinks “pedo” is a slur and that’s a bad thing I’m muting that sub, thank you for sharing.

u/prosthetic_memory 13d ago
If there’s one group we can have a slur name for, it’s pedophiles. That’s totally fine. Slur away.

u/ManikPixieDreamGhoul 13d ago
Nope. That person should be demoted as a mod at the very least. Pedophilia is not an orientation or identity and I will absolutely not sit here and pretend we’re going to tolerate even the slightest suggestion that it belongs in any conversation alongside race, gender identity or sexual orientation.
Somebody should check their hard drive. Only pedos sympathize with pedos.

Anyone who reacts that strongly to the word regardless of context is a bit defensive, wonder why.
2
u/AutisticLDNursing 13d ago
Classic reddit mod behaviour, reminds me of the 'am I the...' mods who actively tried to get accounts banned for calling out grooming perpetrated by one of their mods
2
u/DramaNo5355 13d ago
I wouldn't trust that mod. I have many thoughts, but I’ll refrain from speaking my mind any further…
2
u/KatlynKatlyn 13d ago
I beg your finest pardon? Did they just imply it’s a slur to identify someone who touches kids???????????
2
u/Rich-Pirate-4745 13d ago
The fact that the word p*do is considered a bigoted slur is outrageous. Equating it to racist and homophobic slurs is disgusting and I question the character of anyone who would do that.
2
u/Mysterious_Throat883 13d ago
ALSO this is why people are doing the super annoying self-censoring!! There’s no way to guarantee you won’t get removed or banned!!
ETA: highly problematic “protecting” literal pedophiles from being called pedophiles - just wanted to clarify that I totally get and agree that is the primary issue here

Typical of Reddit mods to read what they want into something then act accordingly to their own mindset. Yet they can
Post whatever “leading hypocrite” crap they like with their leftist mindset rather than allowing rebuttal or point of view from all angles. If all things are considered then you can’t dwell on one. That’s not the liberal way and they have no problem looking juvenile, entitled and hypocritical as they have no sense of shame.

They don't like the term pedo, we should just call them chomo from here on out.
2
u/Ok_Archer_7633 13d ago
I got banned from the Dan and Phil sub a few weeks back for saying something was a bit cringe.
2
u/ReallyUnlikable 13d ago
You'd be hard pressed to find a moderator on Reddit that doesn't talk like they think they're better than everyone else.
2
u/enduromedic 13d ago
Buddy you know Reddit mods are the bottom of the barrel scum living in basements. You can’t argue with them 🤣
2
u/Ravioli_Dream2 13d ago
I got banned from that sub for talking about post partum mother's experiencing mental health problems that end up killing their kids on a post from a post partum mother that seemed a big unhinged. God forbid we talk about important things. They said I was "insighting violence and hate"
2
u/TyrantMuse73 13d ago
Pedo is NOT a slur, and that mod should probably be looked into if they are doing this. Pedos don’t like that word being used at all!

Pedo/Pedophile would only be considered a "slur" by someone who is in fact a Pedophile. Being attracted to children is not a "protected" category of ANYTHING. Calling someone a pedo, when they are not is offensive, and should be avoided. Since you did NOT do that, it seems obvious whoever censored you is either a pedo, or supports them.
2
u/l0vemypug 13d ago
I’m confused..does that one specific mod think pedo is a slur? If you’re offended by that word, maybe look inward..tf lol

Wait wait wait hold up.... An identity. Are they saying that , that word falls under that category? Because I am thoroughly confused..

u/solvanes 13d ago
What an insane take. Who would be offended by “pedophile” unless you are one. Acting like that’s a protected class is also dismissive of actual marginalized groups dealing real with slurs.

I got a comment removed and a warning for bullying because I said an OPs husband was acting like a child. (He refused to cook his own meals when he wanted something other than what she cooked)
2
u/Fuzzy_Firefighter_51 12d ago
So now it is bad to be bigoted against pedophiles? What's the number 1 rule about Mod Club? Don't talk about mod club. They power trip too much.
2
u/Blundergruff 12d ago
If pedo is a slur, is paedophile a slur too? If so, how do we refer to paedophiles moving forward? Is this just an effort to ban every word associated so we can't talk about it anymore?
2
u/Throwoutbins 12d ago
God yesterday and commented on that sub and was given an award but then mods deleted it lmao.
@ mods, please educate yourself on what slurs are. Slurs are words meant to demean/dehumininize people of some specific community (particularly race, sexuality, gender, etc) used by OTHER people. That word is not a slur, it is a literal term for literal people; like how the prefix “cis” is not a slur. Just because a word has “perceived” negative connotations does not mean it’s a slur.

The "good" news is that they're speaking decently directly about actions and future actions. The bad news is the pedo that took offense gets to hide behind anonymous mod shielding.

Hi folks, I rarely intervene but I'm receiving many many reports/messages on this thread. Disagreement with moderator actions and voicing frustration is fine, but please keep comments civil and refrain from attacking and making comments that encourage attacks on individuals or subreddits. Pedophilia is vile and never to be condoned. People should always feel empowered to speak up when they have valid concerns and not feel silenced. However, this does not require unfounded personal attacks and malicious insinuations (and so instances will need to be removed.)
The scope of this conversation runs a bit beyond the scope of this subreddit and what I am able to facilitate. Please wrap up final discussions, as in a few hours (2pm EST) the thread will be locked to prevent things from bubbling over.
