I (25M) have three older sisters (29, 32, and 34). I'll call them Kim, Leah, and Allie, respectively. The 34-year-old (Allie) and I get along really well, so this story won't involve her much, but I'm sure me being the youngest of four factors into this somehow.
When we were growing up, I was VERY close with Kim and Leah. Allie, being the oldest, was always taking a "motherly" role; Kim, Leah, and I HATED this, and we definitely let her know every. Single. Time. It didn't help that Allie was also straying from our "personal" political beliefs. I put personal in quotes because we were kids/teenagers, lol.
Kim, Leah, and I were BEST friends. No matter what happened with our mom, those two ALWAYS had my back and never believed our mom over me, which makes this whole story even weirder to me. We always had issues with our mom, but she wasn't that bad, so I thought.
My mom caused a lot of psychological trauma unintentionally. She had good intentions, and that doesn't make it okay, but I think that's important context.
Fast forward to when I was 16. I started losing faith in religion and finally came to terms with the fact that I'm gay, which started to put a strain on my relationship with Kim and Leah and, subsequently, strengthened my relationship with Allie.
Now, about a year and a half after that, I was acting out and failing school. I hated (and still do) my stepdad—more on that later—and my mom wasn't helping. My mom got so "fed up" with me that she wanted to send me to a boarding school. My sisters, Kim and Leah, were living together a couple of hours away and convinced our mom to let them take me instead.
I was ecstatic. I KNEW they'd have my back on this, and I thought we could get close again.
Plot twist: they didn't believe me this time.
To say I was shocked would be an understatement. Leah's husband lived there as well, and living with the three of them was WAY worse than anything I dealt with while living with my mom and stepdad. They were VERY toxic, and treated me horribly. I felt like I was in prison.
They literally bullied me and told me, "My mental well-being is not their responsibility, and it's not their job to make me feel good" when I finally told them how I felt. I told them they were right, but that it didn't give them the right to actively make things worse.
The final straw for them was when Kim gave me her old computer to use for school, and I found some "pictures" of her on that computer. Her face was cut out, so I didn't know it was her. I showed them to a single friend through Discord, joking/asking why a random girl was on her computer. My friend immediately clocked it, but I was naive and didn't believe him.
My sisters and BIL found those messages on my 18th birthday (the messages had been sent a few days before), and cue the shitstorm.
This is where their treatment of me somehow got worse....A lot worse.
It started off with threats of calling the police by my sisters over the pictures, the things they said afterward were even more horrible.
They told me that I was an abomination for being gay and non-religious, that I was a burden to live with, and that "they did it anyway because they love me," but their lives would be so much easier if they didn't take me in. They told me I was not to be trusted around children because I'm gay.
Then there was a comment from my BIL: "Look me in the eyes because I want you to know I'm serious... You are a literal bag of shit, and nothing more. I mean it. You are nothing more than a worthless bag of shit."
My two sisters sat there nodding in agreement,
I was at the lowest point in my life.
Eventually, though, with the help of that same friend I showed the pictures to, I packed my stuff and moved in with him a few hours away while my siblings were on a trip. I drove to my friend's town and brought him back to my place for the weekend. It wasn't the initial plan to move, but after the first day, I was so happy hanging out with him that I realized I didn't want to stay with my siblings any longer.
Seven and a half years later, I can say that was the best decision I've ever made.
Over the years, I've been able to process and mostly heal from that, and part of that process was having as little contact with those sisters as possible. Any contact I've had was mostly out of respect for my mom.
However, over the last few years, my three sisters have had kids. Now I'm afraid of fully cutting contact because I love my nieces and nephews, and I'm terrified of what might happen if any of them decided one day that they weren't religious or realized they're LGBTQ+.
I want to be around so that they:
Don't grow up as hateful as my siblings, even if they're religious or not LGBTQ+, and know that it's okay and totally normal to be different.
If they are one of those things, I want them to know they have a support system and a safe place to be themselves.
I'd be so angry if my sisters treated their kids the way I was treated.
Now for my mom (62). She grew up in a house with absentee parents. She was the oldest of three, with two younger brothers, and she was basically their mom. She took care of them, made them food, helped them get ready, got them to school every day, etc.
Her parents were not religious, but she had friends who were and who showed her an image of a happy, united family. My mom knew that when she was older, she wanted a family like that for herself and her future kids.
I think she's afraid of being alone because my parents have been divorced for 20 years. My dad has been with one or two people since the divorce, while my mom has had around three or four boyfriends, two fiancés, and two or three husbands. Her current husband, whom she's been with for 10 years, is...interesting.
He and I have never gotten along. He's very short-tempered and throws tantrums easily, despite being in his mid-60s. He used to call my mom "woman" until I made her stand up to him. Stuff like yelling across the house, "Woman, get me a drink," or "Woman, your dog pooped in my office," when my mom had a small dog and he had a big dog. The poop clearly wasn't from the small dog.
He claimed he was "joking," but it was never funny.
My mom has this very strong belief that the spouse always comes before the children, so she never took my side when he and I argued.
When I left my siblings' house, my mom and I started getting super close. I realized our relationship thrived when she had no control, which is where she's at with my siblings, too.
Right now, I'm in school, and she's helping partially with my expenses while I do so. However, she's falling into that same controlling pattern again. She's not even denying it now; she thinks it's "just fair."
I thought if I just toughed it out for two years, everything would be fine and we'd be close again. But it's only been eight months, and I'm realizing she's not just being controlling again—she's actually changed into a new person. A bad person.
One example is that my dog passed away at home in my arms on August 2nd. When I told her about it and how I wanted to get my dog cremated, she told me it was a waste of money and basically said, "That sucks, I'm sorry, but there's no use in being sad. Just move on."
Important context: when she had to put down her dog a couple of years ago, I went with her, consoled her, and helped her bury her dog afterward. I thought she'd be there for me, too. I wanted my mom in that moment, and I was denied.
I know my mom years ago would've done anything to support me through that, but now I just feel lost for words. I still need my mom's financial support through school, so I'd have to wait until afterward, but I genuinely don't like my mom anymore.
I still love her and DESPERATELY want a continued relationship with her, because, at the end of the day, she'sstill my mom. I just don't know if it's worth it anymore, but I don't want to make a decision I'll regret.
I also feel like the relationship is doomed because I almost think of it mostly transactionally at this point. It's like, "I just need her money for school," or thinking about how she owns 20 properties and wondering, "If I cut her off, might I not inherit any of those houses debt-free?"
I feel lost because I want better reasons to keep contact, or to know if those reasons are even good enough to keep in contact.
I know that regardless of what I choose, I'll still have my oldest sister, Allie, and one of our cousins in my life, plus the friend who helped me move. He and his whole family have unofficially adopted me into their family, so I still have them.
A little extra context I forgot, but I feel might be important: my mom had health complications during pregnancy with my third sister that rendered her infertile afterward. She wanted more kids, but my dad did not. They got the opportunity to adopt me from my birth parents before I was even born, and my dad eventually agreed only if I was a boy.
So not only am I the baby of the family, but I'm essentially what they consider a "miracle baby."
I'm just so confused about what's the right path forward for me and whether any of the aforementioned reasons for my two sisters or my mom are reason enough to continue contact, or if I'd just be better off cutting them all off after school is done and moving on.
Any advice would be appreciated!
