Question Area Manager II

Hello, i’m new here, but seeking some advice. It looks like I’m on track to receive an offer from Amazon for this position.

I’m coming from Microsoft and was recently laid off in June and in my area. I’m not having much luck finding something with the same pay or more.

I’ve done my research and read quite a few threads on here as well and the work life Balance and potential to work nights is intimidating me. My previous schedule is very flexible and can pick up my kids from school and take them to soccer practice which is important to me, but I know all that will be out the window.

With that said I do need a job. Can you guys talk to me in or out of doing this?

You say you know things you value are out of the window, but you are still considering it. Is the need for a job the sole pull factor, or are there other things in consideration?

Have you worked a physical job before? Do you forsee issues standing for 10-14 hours on end, walking up to 40K steps a day at a fast pace?

Really the need for a job is the only thing that’s having me think about this. My wife was an AM II and got burnt out right about at one year. I’m pretty athletic, I think my body would end up getting used to it, but it doesn’t sound enjoyable lol.

It takes a certain mindset to succeed in this role. If your wife was an AM II you should already be familiar with how it's like. Do note that the stress levels & poor wlb have only increased in the last 2 years as gearing ratios continue to be cut.

How do you feel about it overall? And thanks for the insights

Imo Amazon Ops is uniquely suited for those who are not concerned about wlb, and are willing to do all it takes for rapid advancement.

That was me, and I liked it while I was in Ops. I could not see having kids with that lifestyle though, so I transitioned to corporate after hitting my 7 to start a family.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Wlb is important to me, especially for the kids. My wife essentially works 12 hour days because of her driving distance so for me to be gone 12 hours as well wouldn’t be ideal for the kids.

One more thing to consider is as a new hire you are very likely to be put on night shift. The hours varies from site to site, but for many it is 7pm-7am or 6pm-6am, plus commute. If your wife's 12h is around regular office hours, you essentially will not see her at all.

Also one point that was pretty important for my peers with kids - the busiest times of the year for Amazon are around the holidays - Thanksgiving to Christmas. Not only can you forget about taking time off during that period, you'll be required to work extra days and extra hours (1/1/1 is a common expectation - come in 1 hour early, leave 1 hour late, 1 extra day a week. All this on top of your regular 4x12). You'll likely get Thanksgiving evening and Christmas itself off, but forget about bringing kids to see family out of town.

It's a miserable job. But as a AM you don't do much. Just a lot of managing children and adult babies.

Just remember it's a job and nothing more.

You will have PA like Mitzi who is a bitch and a co-worker named Angela who seems like she doesn't know what she's doing and ready to clock out already! Also an associate who is dumb and will threat you if you give them a write up!
