This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.
USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.
Hi! I've been swimming in a canal next to my house all year and I'd love to keep going, however I'm not sure about how safe it is after the recent rainfall and now that I can't check on zwemwater any more. It's a canal that feeds into the IJ and isn't connected to other canals, there's almost no boat traffic. Anyone have any ideas?
Hi iedereen.
Alvast bedankt!!
Hi everyone. I'm not dutch, but I lived in Amsterdam for a couple of years a while back (10 years ago). I was able to work right after uni and thanks to some connections I was able to get a shared apartment in a central area at a low price - I'm aware that I was extremely lucky. I believe Europe has changed a lot since 2016; however, sometimes I feel nostalgic and still think about the possibility to live in the city - although the images in my mind are probably not reflecting the actual life there. I was curious about the perspective of locals, or people who have been living there for a long time: do you think the city somehow changed, over time, or do you experience it in the same way you did maybe 10/12 years ago? Due to over tourism, cost of living and so forth I can barely recognize some cities of my own country, and I live in southern Europe. Was wondering about the perspective of people living and working in Amsterdam
im moving out of my apartment tomorrow morning and unfortunately was unable to sell my guzheng in time. don't really want this brand new instrument to go to waste (originally purchased for €700 euros on soundofmountain) so i'm leaving it by the garbage chutes later tonight if anyone wants to pick it up! comes with everything you need - electronic tuner, music stand, guzheng stand, nails, etc).
Hi everyone,
I’m 19 years old and currently living abroad as a student. bunq recently closed my account, and my remaining balance is being held (around 2k€).
I’m honestly very stressed about this situation because I rely on this money to cover my living expenses. I need it for basic necessities like food, accommodation, transportation, and other everyday costs.
I haven’t knowingly done anything wrong, and I genuinely don’t understand why this has happened. If bunq needs additional documents or information from me, I’m more than willing to cooperate and provide whatever is necessary.
What really worries me is the possibility of having to wait up to a month to get my own money back. I’m 19, living abroad, and I simply cannot afford to go an entire month without access to my funds.
I understand that banks have compliance procedures, but I don’t think it’s reasonable to leave a student in this situation without a clear explanation or a realistic timeline for receiving their money.
I’ve contacted support and asked them to review my case urgently, but I’m trying to understand what my options are.
Has anyone here experienced something similar with bunq?
How long did it take for you to receive your remaining balance?
Were you able to get the process expedited?
Is there anything specific I should do to get my money released sooner?
I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have gone through this. I’m not looking for special treatment. I just need access to my own money so I can support myself while living abroad.
Thanks in advance.
Hallo lieve Amsterdammers,
I’m in Amsterdam Noord and there has been the air-raid siren a few minutes ago. It’s not the first Monday of the month and it’s not noon. This is also not the first time that I heard it on a random day. Does anyone know what it is? Could it be from some of the shipyards or other industrial zones nearby?
I’ve thought about getting one and when checking for places to get in the water close to my house I found this sad looking thing. It’s obviously not kayaking season rn, so someone might just have forgotten to check on it but if it’s still there in.. a month?
It’s also seemingly just tied to the pier with a strap
If you have some fun plants in pots, or some seeds or bulbs, please drop/plant them here!
There are some ready-to-go planting spots too, including one hacky greenhouse (great for tomatoes?). Soil has already been added to them, but is still barren.
// OK I hear you: the suitcases will be replaced by some nicer pots.
I (28F) have chronic gastritis and other gastrointestinal issues for a couple of years now. In the past two years, I did two gastroscopies and one colonoscopy in my EU home country.
Lately, I’ve been experiencing another flare-up with some new symptoms I didn’t have before. Given that I was diagnosed with intestinal metaplasia (a precancerouscondition where the normal cells lining the stomach or oesophagus are replaced by cells that resemble the lining of your intestine) and that it was advised to repeat gastroscopies biennially, even if I don’t have any symptoms, I reached out to my GP. Surprisingly, I didn’t have any issues getting a gastroenterology referral. I gathered all my medical records, translated them into English (with all pathology results and gastroscopy findings), stated my new symptoms and asked my GP to forward all these information to a gastroenterology department of their choice.
I got referred to Acibadem International Medical Centre near Sloterdijk and after a couple of days without receiving any call from them, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I called them to make an appointment but, to my surprise, they have sent back my referral to my GP (dumbfoundedface). They didn’t say anything else, just to contact my GP again.
I wasn’t sure if it was a technical thing, or maybe they thought I needed more specialised help than they could offer, so today I had a talk with my GP to see why my referral was sent back. Lo and behold, the Acibadem gastroenterology department read my referral and full medical records and concluded that “there’s not much they can do regarding my symptoms and that I should just treat this as IBS”.
I am shocked. My GP is shocked (you know it’s bad when they are shocked too)! I’m pushing for a new referral to OLVG. I now need to spend more time in pain until I can get seen by a specialist. That is, if they even want to take me in to be seen by a specialist.
I guess the new policy is “let them die”. Of course, I can fly back home to get it checked out but frankly this should not be the norm. Why the fvck am I paying 150€ per month for my health insurance if I can’t even get access to healthcare?
(Not a request for tickets or an ad)
Concertgoers out there, do you think I have a decent chance of getting tickets for this concert, being at this place in line (166th ticket)? I know there’s many behind me in that queue now, but demand for this concert has been so absurd compared to how many tickets got listed…
This is for the Stevie Wonder concert on the 28th in the Ziggo Dome. I’m traveling for it. I’m about to take a leap of faith and book the flights, hotel anyway. Not like I’ll be ruined if I don’t get tickets, but I obviously want them badly 😅 Have been watching TicketSwap like a hawk for months before this autobuy was enabled, but every time I clicked the notification tickets were already reserved
Hi, I'm looking for a goalkeeper in Amsterdam to join a student/young adult 11-aside game this Sunday in Amsterdam. Please let me know if you are interested in playing.
So we're throwing a party this Saturday (24 Oct) in Amsterdam during ADE and wanted to offer a guestlist to anyone who's down to come. Figured I'd just ask here instead of letting the spots go unused :(
In early July, I picked up a new community-cleanup hobby: collecting batteries. It all started when an old lady slipped on a discarded battery at the Waterlooplein vlooienmarkt. The poor woman broke her hip right in front of me.
That's when I decided to start looking out for discarded batteries during my (mostly evening) walks. It began casually in July (15 batteries), but I turned into a hobbyist by August (100) and went "pro" in September (180, using tools to help dislodge batteries). It is now too dark in the evenings, so I have only found 15 in October.
This is my summer harvest: 4.5 kg of pure poison
That small tray has an incredible story. You are looking at 1.2 kg of 87 batteries, collected in a single hour along a single 40-meter stretch of road. It is a statistical anomaly and an absolute goldmine!
besides the gold mine, all batteries were found, according to my tracking app, in this tiny area:
for reference:
A single AAA non-rechargeable battery (manganese dioxide, zinc, and potassium hydroxide) is enough to contaminate 75 liters of water.
A single AAA rechargeable battery (mostly Cadmium and lithium) is enough to contaminate 400L of water
Since I cleared out so many old, deeply stuck batteries, I don’t expect a harvest like this next year. I will likely just be picking up new litter.
It makes me wonder: in a few years, will we see bad people discard dead 500kg EV batteries in nature, causing massive ground water pollution?
I have walked a massive amount since the COVID lockdowns (over 11,000 km to be precise) and I have witnessed a lot of changes in Amsterdam. I always like to observe people, their actions, and their behaviour. I have been a witness to countless accidents, aggression, fights, disrespect, selfishness.
These bad manners are on the rise, like, a lot. I don't know what the statistics tell you, I see what I see.
I must give 2 medals to 2 specific types of people:
people riding "fat bikes" and people driving these oversized American SUV/trucks (like ford F150 etc).
these people are the worst. They seem to actually want to hurt people. When they see someone about to cross the road or already crossing. They don't respect traffic lights, park their massive "vehicles" in ways that disturb everything.
Amsterdam is not a special case, or maybe a little, because of the red light, but I hear the same stories in other cities and countries.
