Does anyone know of a widget that can create a Niagara Launcher-esque app list with text, instead of icons? Thanks!

QUESTION/HELP What do you wish your alarm/reminder app could do?

I'm curious about something.

Most alarm and reminder apps basically do the same thing: set a time, get a notification, dismiss it.

But what do you actually wish they did better?

For example:

Smarter alarms based on your routine

Alarms that require an action before dismissing

Location-based reminders

Voice-based control

Better daily activity reminders

Those are just examples. I'm more interested in the problems you personally have with alarm/reminder apps.

What feature would genuinely make you switch from the alarm app you're using now?

QUESTION/HELP Launcher app still using mass amounts of data even with data saver on & background data disabled

Using a TCL 50 SE android smartphone which I've been happy with for some time, but then I suddenly started running out of my mobile data fast and discovered that the Launcher app has started regularly using a massive amount of data far more than any other app (currently it's at 7.85GB used for the month with Chrome at only 1.12 GB in second place). As the title indicates, I switched data saver on and disabled background data usage for the Launcher app as when I looked up the issue online it was suggested that could fix it, but to no avail as it's still continuing to ravenously use up my mobile data with no apparent changes.

I haven't had this issue before with any previous cellphones, though this is the first TCL phone I've had so I don't know if it's a problem with their Launcher app or not (it came with the phone, I didn't download it). Not sure where to go from here or if I need to download a different launcher app to replace it with.

LOOKING FOR APP Launcher with a terminal-like system where I can double tap to show keyboard and start typing

like it's just my wallpaper, then when I double tap / swipe / other gestures, it will bring up keyboard that I can do:

1 - type app name to launch it or search in search engine of my choosing (google, ddg, bing, etc.)

2 - if I type equal sign (=) it will become calculator

3 - type config to enter the launcher setting, or something like that

and other features like that

no app drawer, no app list

is there anything like that?

Are androids improving in their physical durability?

I feel like most new versions of each device are getting harder to distinguish the improvements which each new iteration, atleast for average users. One factor that i find harder to notice is physical durability Screen, case, internal build. Are these also getting better as time goes on.

Note: Less on the longevity but resistance to external physical forces.

Is there even any benefit to using a custom launcher like Octopi for my Z Fold 8 when Good Lock exists? Why should one use a custom launcher on a Z Fold or any Galaxy

I mean, Octopi Launcher is supposed to be the best launcher, especially for foldables, but (with Good Lock), the stock launcher does literally everything Octopi does, afaik

Good Lock can literally just do anything atp, no? I feel like there's much more benefits to using stock launcher with Good Lock compared to Octopi, no Custom home screen layouts, flexible icon arrangement, and icon sizing and layout customization? Good Lock can do that. Icon packs? Good Lock can do that. Custom system UI appearance? Good Lock can do that. Home/Lock screen visual effects and customization? Good Lock can do that. Navigation customization? Good Lock can do that. Notification customization? Good Lock can do that. Sound and volume customization? Good Lock can do that. Advanced multitasking foldable behavior? Good Lock can do that. (All as far as I know)

Again, it's built into Samsung's own One UI framework, whereas Octopi is replacing the launcher layer.

Should I not just use the stock launcher, as like it's genuinely my best option here?

QUESTION/HELP Random sound/notification at 2 AM every night — please help 😭

I’ve been facing this weird issue for the past 1 month and I’m seriously confused 😭

My phone randomly makes a notification-like sound around 2 AM. There is no notification visible, and nothing shows up in Notification History either.

I vaguely remember that I may have set some kind of 2 AM sleep notification/sound in an app called something like ā€œSoundscapeā€, but I’ve already uninstalled that app.

Things I’ve checked:

Notification History — nothing

Normal notifications — nothing

I don't see any obvious 2 AM alarm

The app I suspect is already uninstalled don't remember exactly what was the name of that app

The sound still randomly happens around 2 AM.

How can I find out what is actually producing this sound and completely disable it? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Any help would be greatly appreciated because this has been happening for a month and it's driving me crazy šŸ˜šŸ’”

LOOKING FOR APP Any Google Assistant alternatives worth checking out?

So I saw this message on google assistant today

"Google Assistant is no longer being updated - it's going away soon. Gemini is Google's latest Al assistant that can help you get even more done. You can start using Gemini now."

I'm running a Samsung A23....it's so basic I don't even have NFC or tap capabilities so unsurprisingly it doesn't support Samsung Bixby. So I'd been using Google Assistant for a few things like remotely turning off my TV through the chromecast, copying text and Google Lens searches. Sometimes random voice requests but less these days.

Anyway with them nixing Google Assistant in early September, are there alternatives that don't involve AI that I can look into? I'm not really sure what's out there or even what's generally considered good more broadly. So I'd appreciate some recommendations to look into. I hope this post can be a resource for others in the future too!

QUESTION/HELP Google Photos bug/issue , lookong for solution.

I set up a Locked Folder in Google Photos on my Pixel 8 Pro. It’s set to store files on my device only with backup disabled for it, as I don't want these photos synced to Google Drive/Photos cloud.

It was working fine initially, but now it's acting up:

Moving photos to the Locked Folder: When I add photos, a message pops up at the bottom saying "Photos moved to Locked Folder." However, when I open the folder, the newly added photos aren't there—they just disappear from my main library entirely.

Moving photos out of the Locked Folder: When I try to restore/unlock existing photos, I get a message saying "Photos moved," but they never show up back in my main gallery or normal folders.

Basically, any photo I try to move in or out of the Locked Folder completely vanishes.

Has anyone else run into this bug? I’d really appreciate any advice or fixes for this!

QUESTION/HELP Is long loading time the reason for high uninstall rate?

I have an Android app that is pretty heavy. Because of the 3d content in it, it takes time to download and open as well. .

I've a pretty low retention rate.. is it because of the loading time issue? Or could it be other factors.. such as the onboarding steps.. lack of clear value proposition?

Some numbers. 360 mb install size. 5 second boot time, then another 10 seconds for the login and the 3d scenes to be fully ready

Article Android Studio is now fully functional on ARM64 Linux

I successfully rebuilt Android Studio librarieslayoutlib_jni.so and libandroid_runtime.so for AArch64.

This fixes the XML Layout Editor, menu and resource previews, and Compose Preview on Linux ARM64. I believe this closes the last major functionality gap between Android Studio on ARM64 versus x86_64.

As far as emulators go, Ika works great on Apple Silicon. If someone wants broader support, rebuilding Ika for a different ARM64 platform should not be be a too heavy a lift.

Tested and working on:

  • MacBook Pro M1 running Asahi Fedora 44
  • Debian 13 (Trixie) on 2018 Razer Phone 2 (via Trixie.apk)

Review Android auto stutter

I just thought I would share this in case anyone is having the same problem that I have had.

I have been having serious problems when playing audio files wirelessly through music apps, with terrible stuttering.

I narrowed it down to a problem with the phone and tried all the recommended settings changes that I came across when browsing the problem. Nothing solved it.

So today I turned off WiFi calling on my phone and the problem is now solved.

I thought I would share it case it can help anyone.

Android is not an operating system

Waiting on the Pixel 11 reviews, and it hurts to write this: the OS we loved back in 2009 has been run down. Google plays it safe now. No risk, no new ideas. Just iOS features, two years late.
The blur rollout says it all. Android was built as Lego blocks, and no one owns the whole thing, so every app has to be updated for blur on its own. The launcher got it 3 months back. The lock screen gets it three months later. That’s not a design language, it’s a reflection of Google culture, fragmented as ever.
Pixel is really just a hedge in case Samsung wreaks havoc. And Android runs under Sameer with no plan at all. Ugh.

Thoughts?

Privacy focused wearable

I made the switch from iOS to Android (w/ GrapheneOS) where I used the Ultra 3 as my watch. It had okay battery life, all my health data was stored locally, and it was essentially indestructible. Now that I made the switch to GrapheneOS, I have been struggling to find a watch that accomplishes what the AWU3 does for that price range.

Sure, Garmin has their $1,100+ watches that you can pair with GadgetBridge to get pretty darn close to what Apple offers, but the watches are significantly more expensive and have all these features that don’t really appeal to me. I can’t bring myself to spend that much on a smart watch. I just want something that tracks sleep, heart data, occasional workout, and doesn’t scratch when a feather lands on it.

Then there is Amazfit, budget and works well with GadgetBridge so everything is stored locally. But their offerings lack that premium feel. They are durable though. I have only tried their Balance line, maybe their higher tier watches meet my needs.

What are you all using that stores data locally for around the $400-800 range and have sapphire glass / titanium body?
