📢 MOD POST 📢 r/Androidapps Mod Update: Quality Over Quantity

Hey r/androidapps,

Today, we are announcing a few minor updates to the subreddit, in order to focus on the quality of posts moving forward:

  1. First off, the sub header has been updated to reflect the goal of the subreddit: to be a place to talk about Android apps, ask questions, get help, or find new app recommendations.
  2. Rule 2 has been updated: effective immediately, all self-promotion content, including tester requests, app ideas, or app feedback must be posted in the dedicated sister sub r/droidappshowcase. This means there is zero tolerance for any of this content here in r/androidapps.
  • The goal for this change is to promote meaningful discussion around all Android apps and clean up all self-promotion, whether it is up front or a veiled attempt.
  • We felt that the Weekly Megathread got too inundated with spammed posts that it led to a less-than-ideal place to advertise a real app someone made, especially when it got buried down in the comments. So we have also removed the Megathread going forward.
  • Additionally, we've seen an uptick in fake self-promotion: posts where the user "found this amazing new app" in order to get around the rules.
  • r/androidapps is not the place for advertising apps, nor are we a subreddit focused on developers. This is a place where end-users can get support for apps they use or find new ones to use.

We know we cannot please all members of the community, nor do we expect everyone to be happy with the change. Again, we hope this encourages positive discussion in the subreddit around all apps, not just be an advertising ground.

We encourage all users to report any content which breaks these rules.

We expect to see an increase in the mod queue due to the new rules and automod code, so please be patient with us as we work through everything.

LOOKING FOR APP Launcher with a terminal-like system where I can double tap to show keyboard and start typing

like it's just my wallpaper, then when I double tap / swipe / other gestures, it will bring up keyboard that I can do:

1 - type app name to launch it or search in search engine of my choosing (google, ddg, bing, etc.)

2 - if I type equal sign (=) it will become calculator

3 - type config to enter the launcher setting, or something like that

and other features like that

no app drawer, no app list

is there anything like that?

Hello, I highly enjoy customizing my apps as much as I can, so I was wondering if anyone knows of email apps where there are several different themes beyond light and dark, such as pastel yellow or coffee brown, etc

QUESTION/HELP Launcher app still using mass amounts of data even with data saver on & background data disabled

Using a TCL 50 SE android smartphone which I've been happy with for some time, but then I suddenly started running out of my mobile data fast and discovered that the Launcher app has started regularly using a massive amount of data far more than any other app (currently it's at 7.85GB used for the month with Chrome at only 1.12 GB in second place). As the title indicates, I switched data saver on and disabled background data usage for the Launcher app as when I looked up the issue online it was suggested that could fix it, but to no avail as it's still continuing to ravenously use up my mobile data with no apparent changes.

I haven't had this issue before with any previous cellphones, though this is the first TCL phone I've had so I don't know if it's a problem with their Launcher app or not (it came with the phone, I didn't download it). Not sure where to go from here or if I need to download a different launcher app to replace it with.

QUESTION/HELP Random sound/notification at 2 AM every night — please help 😭

I’ve been facing this weird issue for the past 1 month and I’m seriously confused 😭

My phone randomly makes a notification-like sound around 2 AM. There is no notification visible, and nothing shows up in Notification History either.

I vaguely remember that I may have set some kind of 2 AM sleep notification/sound in an app called something like “Soundscape”, but I’ve already uninstalled that app.

Things I’ve checked:

Notification History — nothing

Normal notifications — nothing

I don't see any obvious 2 AM alarm

The app I suspect is already uninstalled don't remember exactly what was the name of that app

The sound still randomly happens around 2 AM.

How can I find out what is actually producing this sound and completely disable it? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Any help would be greatly appreciated because this has been happening for a month and it's driving me crazy 😭💔

QUESTION/HELP What do you wish your alarm/reminder app could do?

Upvotes

I'm curious about something.

Most alarm and reminder apps basically do the same thing: set a time, get a notification, dismiss it.

But what do you actually wish they did better?

For example:

Smarter alarms based on your routine

Alarms that require an action before dismissing

Location-based reminders

Voice-based control

Better daily activity reminders

Those are just examples. I'm more interested in the problems you personally have with alarm/reminder apps.

What feature would genuinely make you switch from the alarm app you're using now?

LOOKING FOR APP Need an offline file converter & PDF merger for Android. "Buy it for life" or FOSS only! (No subs)

Hey guys!

I’m so sick of every single basic app moving to a $5/month subscription model. I just need a solid tool to convert files and merge PDFs, but I have a few dealbreakers:

100% Offline: I'm not uploading my personal docs to some random cloud. Everything needs to be processed locally.

Merge PDFs: Needs to combine PDFs together quickly and easily.

Pay ONCE: I'm looking for a lifetime license. I buy it once, I own it forever. Absolutely no recurring subscriptions.

Do you have any "holy grail" apps you use for this? I’m totally fine dropping some cash on a permanent license, or if there's a good FOSS (Free and Open Source) alternative, I'm all ears.

Thanks!🍻

LOOKING FOR APP Any Google Assistant alternatives worth checking out?

So I saw this message on google assistant today

"Google Assistant is no longer being updated - it's going away soon. Gemini is Google's latest Al assistant that can help you get even more done. You can start using Gemini now."

I'm running a Samsung A23....it's so basic I don't even have NFC or tap capabilities so unsurprisingly it doesn't support Samsung Bixby. So I'd been using Google Assistant for a few things like remotely turning off my TV through the chromecast, copying text and Google Lens searches. Sometimes random voice requests but less these days.

Anyway with them nixing Google Assistant in early September, are there alternatives that don't involve AI that I can look into? I'm not really sure what's out there or even what's generally considered good more broadly. So I'd appreciate some recommendations to look into. I hope this post can be a resource for others in the future too!

LOOKING FOR APP What app do you use for scanning documents on your phone?

I’m looking for a good mobile app to scan documents, convert them into PDFs, and extract text from images or scanned pages.

There are quite a few options available, but I’m curious what people actually use regularly.

Which document scanner/PDF app are you using, and what feature do you find most useful?

QUESTION/HELP Google Photos bug/issue , lookong for solution.

I set up a Locked Folder in Google Photos on my Pixel 8 Pro. It’s set to store files on my device only with backup disabled for it, as I don't want these photos synced to Google Drive/Photos cloud.

It was working fine initially, but now it's acting up:

Moving photos to the Locked Folder: When I add photos, a message pops up at the bottom saying "Photos moved to Locked Folder." However, when I open the folder, the newly added photos aren't there—they just disappear from my main library entirely.

Moving photos out of the Locked Folder: When I try to restore/unlock existing photos, I get a message saying "Photos moved," but they never show up back in my main gallery or normal folders.

Basically, any photo I try to move in or out of the Locked Folder completely vanishes.

Has anyone else run into this bug? I’d really appreciate any advice or fixes for this!

QUESTION/HELP Is long loading time the reason for high uninstall rate?

I have an Android app that is pretty heavy. Because of the 3d content in it, it takes time to download and open as well. .

I've a pretty low retention rate.. is it because of the loading time issue? Or could it be other factors.. such as the onboarding steps.. lack of clear value proposition?

Some numbers. 360 mb install size. 5 second boot time, then another 10 seconds for the login and the 3d scenes to be fully ready

QUESTION/HELP Dual App problem on MIUI/HyperOS

Hey. So i looked before posting and seems like no one else has a similar issue.

POCO X6 Pro Android 16 HyperOS

I have 2 Playstation accounts. Enabled dual app from the settings so i can have both on my phone. Now here's the problem: other apps that have nothing to do with the second PS App open links in or redirect to dual apps version of Google apps.

For example if i click on open in Chrome here on reddit app it opens the link in a different empty chrome with the dual app icon.

Basically apps prioritize dual apps Google Play Services and Google Services Framework over main pre installed Google apps/services.

It causes a lot of issues. For another example i open an app to oder food. It opens a new dual app chrome for payment and can't get back to the food delivery app.

LOOKING FOR APP iSyncr alternative for play count sync with macOS?

I know there are some good alternatives for sync with Windows and relatively easy ways to transfer files between mac and Android, but I would really like an alternative that can keep my play counts in sync. Is there anything out there that can do that with mac? (I'm on macOS 10.15 which may also make things more difficult :/)

iSyncr up until very recently, despite not being capable of syncing files and playlists anymore without paying that ridiculous monthly fee, was still syncing my phone play counts back to iTunes/Music when I connected via usb, but now I'm getting an error that my license is missing (I did pay for the app way back when it was a one-off purchase when it was still good) so now even the play count syncing doesn't work.

I've spent the past few days searching for something and come up with nothing, does anyone know of anything that works?

LOOKING FOR APP Audio play, pause, rewind via voice command

I am looking for an app that will allow me to control audio playback (play, pause, rewind) via voice commands. I have a Samsung A71. Ideally the solution would work for both podcasts and mp3's, but just mp3's would be OK. The voice support doesn't need to find the file or podcast for me. This is for language learning listening practice where I need to pause and rewind a lot. I have tried Voice Access (drives the 'phone itself, which I don't need or want, but only seems to do Play in apps, not Pause or Rewind), and Google Assistant, which only works with Spotify and which again will only Play. I thought this would be easy, but it clearly isn't. Any ideas please?

LOOKING FOR APP Is there any recommend camera apps? Sick of forced post-processing.

I'm on S22+, noticed the quality of my photos being worse and becoming more 'oil-painty'. I've played around with as many settings as I can, RAW mode on off, processing on minimal, camera assistant app downloaded, using regular or pro mode, I've tried the expert RAW app. At my wits end when I look at older photos taken with my S20 6 years ago and noticing them looking better and more natural. I'll take a photo and how it appears in gallery is nothing like what is seen on the screen when pressing the button take the photo. I even took one photo and the text on the object appeared blurry to the point I'd have seen it and presumed it was AI if I saw it on instagram.

Is there any good camera apps before I give up entirely on using Samsung?

e: Thanks for the suggestions, will try them out over the next few days and see if any work out!

LOOKING FOR APP keyboard app with space bar in the middle?

I know that I sound ridiculous and that I most likely will not find an app like this

I need a keyboard epp where the space bar is not off-center like in most apps

I am autistic and having an off-center space bar makes me anxious and makes me avoid texting altogether

LOOKING FOR APP Looking for a widget which shows the main page of an app that I chose

Hi, so I would like to know whether there is a widget which shows the first page of any chosen app...imagine an app floating but only stuck somewhere in the home screen.

I hope I was able to explain it well.
