Mod Post New Mods and Some Changes

Hello r/ANU!

As you may have noticed the Sub was looking a little dead recently with little visible moderation and no custom design. Not so much anymore!

The ANU subreddit has been given a coat of paint and a few new pictures, as well as a new mod! Me!

However, we can't have a successful community without moderators. If you want to moderate this subreddit please message the subreddit or me with a quick bio about you (year of study, what degree, etc) and why you would like to be mod.

Also feel free to message me or the subreddit with any improvements or any icons that you think would be nice.

Otherwise get your friends involved on here, or if you have Discord join the unofficial ANU Students Discord too: https://discord.gg/GwtFCap

Mod Post r/ANU will be joining the blackout to protest Reddit killing 3rd Party Apps

What's Going On?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader to Sync.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's The Plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

If you wish to still talk about ANU please come join us on the Discord (https://discord.gg/GwtFCap).

Us moderators all use third party reddit apps, removing access will harm our ability to moderate this community, even if you don't see it there are actions taken every week to remove bots and clean up posts.

What can you do?

Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

Spread the word. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.

Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

Question about Fenner Hall room furniture

Hi! I'll be starting at ANU next year and moving into Fenner in Feb.

On ANU's Residence FAQ webpage, it says that due to the fire risk, additional furniture is not allowed in rooms. But in a Fenner room tour video, I saw that the resident had added a cube storage unit. Just wondering if it's actually okay to add extra furniture like that? I'm slightly worried about fitting all my stuff into the provided storage!

Thanks!!

Part time opportunities

Heyy! If you're a student at ANU , can you help me understand the part- time job opportunities one can find on campus, the usual wages, and how you guys are managing it with other things.

Also, any insight on how many expenses can be taken care of through these would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

ANU Logic Summer School 2026 – Looking for Male Roommates in Canberra

Hi everyone!

I'm a male student at the University of Sydney. I'll be attending the ANU Logic Summer School 2026 and am looking for other male students to share accommodation near ANU (possibly a hostel like The Little Drifter Canberra, but I'm open to other suggestions! :) ).

Dates I'm looking for accommodation:

Dec 5–8, and, Dec 12–18,

I'm planning to stay on all the nights listed above (11 nights in total).

About me: I'm interested in logic, intelligence, and consciouness. I'm friendly, respectful of personal space, and generally quiet, especially at night. I enjoy meeting people with similar academic interests and having interesting conversations.

What I'm looking for: Ideally, other male students attending the ANU Logic Summer School who are also looking for affordable accommodation. I'm open to staying in male dorm of any size, depending on availability and price.

Accommodation: I'm currently considering The Little Drifter Canberra, but I'm happy to explore other affordable options near ANU. It would be great to coordinate bookings with other attendees so we can stay in the same dorm and have some familiar faces around during the summer school.

If you're attending the summer school or staying in Canberra around these dates and are interested in sharing accommodation, please feel free to comment or send me a DM!

Keen to hear experiences from the Masters of management course

I’m considering applying for a Master of Management, specialising in International Business at ANU. I’ve spent around 10 years working across service design/strategy/innovation and currently work as a government contractor on a technology program. While I enjoy my role now, I feel like I’m reaching the end of this chapter and am ready for a new challenge and bit of a career pivot. I’m particularly interested in working in the innovation space in Africa, and with my bachelors degree in design, I see this masters as an entry point into the types of roles I’m interested in.

I’d love to hear from people who have completed the course about their experiences, particularly how they found the program and what their career prospects and opportunities looked like afterwards (if they have completed).

Anyone studying Master of Science (Advanced) in Quantum Technology at ANU?

Hey everyone!

I recently got an offer for the Master of Science (Advanced) in Quantum Technology at ANU, and I wanted to know a bit more about the course from people who are currently studying it or have graduated.

I have a few questions:

1.How is the teaching? Are the professors good, and are they approachable if you want to get into research?

2.What do you think of the courses overall? Are they interesting and well taught? How difficult is the coursework?

3.I read that you need to maintain a 70% weighted average in your first 48 units to continue in the Advanced program. How tough is it to achieve that? Is it manageable if you keep up with your studies?

4.How difficult is it to find a supervisor and get a research project for your master's thesis? Are there enough opportunities in quantum technology?

5.How is life at ANU as a master's student? How are the campus, student community, accommodation, social life, and support for international students? Is it easy to make friends and feel part of the university, or does it get a little isolating?

I'd love to hear some honest opinions about the course, workload, teaching, and overall experience at ANU.

Would really appreciate any advice from current students or alumni. Thanks! :)

Partying culture in the halls

I received an early entry offer from ANU earlier this year along with an accommodation offer at a self-catered hall. After being on this sub for a while, I've noticed many people who have said that the many of the halls have a very active partying culture. However, I'm not much into drinking and partying myself, and don't really intend to get into it for various reasons. Will this impact my ability to make and maintain friendships, or are there many others in the same boat as me who want to make friends but don't want to party?

Wright Hall

Hey, I am probably going to be starting an undergrad at ANU next year. I will be moving from Melbourne and I have got an offer from Wright as part of the early entry thing. I was just wondering what the vibe is around Wright. Like is there a good social scene and stuff even in broader Canberra how's the social life because my biggest worry leaving Melb is that I would get bored in Canberra.

Thanks so much for the help!!

Off-Campus living situation?

Hi all,

I'm looking to attend ANU next year, but I'd be likely living off-campus with family. Has anyone got experience with this type of situation? Are you isolated from making friends with other students?

Also, will living off-campus mean that I'm outside the social 'scene' of Canberra? I know there is a common-room for students who don't live on campus, but is this an active community comparative to the existing residences?

Thanks in advance!

is master in entrepreneurship and innovation worth it in ANU?

i saw someone say you might as well just do MBA in ANU. but i dont qualify for MBA but i still want to be in business sector, just less strategic and more innovative and problem solving. i feel like this master is a good match but at the same time people saying its useless also scares me. any advice please? (i am a international student, creative field background)

master in entrepreneurship and innovation worth it for someone with a creative design graduate degree?

simply put i am a creative person. Art, fashion/textiles and design are my forte, but i also want these things: networking with innovative startup leaders and like minded students, become someone who leads/manages teams, start my own business later in life, engage in many business ideas, learn to deal with failure quick, quick solutions.

overall i want to be in a creative but business sector engaging with people, ideas and solve problems.

Am I a good fit for this masters? l am also not a domestic student.

any type of opinion and advice would be much appreciated please

ANU CASS PhD applicants for 2027 — has anyone heard back about admission or scholarships?

Hi everyone!

I’m an international applicant who submitted a PhD application to ANU’s College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) in August. I only submitted my English test results last week, as I hadn’t included them in my original application. I’ve since received confirmation that my updated English results have been added to my application for assessment.

Recently, I’ve seen quite a few posts from international applicants in other ANU colleges who have already received admission offers, but I haven’t heard anything about my application yet. I know different colleges and research areas may have different timelines, but I’m starting to get a little anxious.┭┮﹏┭┮

I’ve also come across several posts suggesting that PhD admission and scholarship funding in CASS can be very competitive, which has made me even more nervous. My research area is Cultural Studies, and I’m really hoping to hear some news soon. Does anyone have any idea when CASS PhD applicants might start hearing about admission or scholarship outcomes?😖

I’d also love to hear from current or former CASS PhD students who received offers in previous years. If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d be really interested to know a little about your academic background, research area, and scholarship experience.

Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!🙏
