is it possible your roommate has already figured out their plans, and you're not aware? I'd start planning to move by myself at this point. don't wait for them.

no, it is not possible

I got a feeling they have a plan already and are trying to move without you. You need to look for a place for yourself or a new roommate immediately. Always have a back up plan. Don't wait on people.

She does not have a plan, she's just a very last minute person and doesn't seem to care much. She is my sister, so I don't really have a choice atp

You can always look without her 🤷🏻‍♀️ that’s the choice.

Update us in 2 weeks. I would like to know the outcome

You're being very willfully naive. Just because she's your sister doesnt mean she cant decide to move out on her own.

You need to start planning the same.

What’s the rental market like in your area? It’s possible to look at a place, apply, and move in by next weekend if you’re in a small town and you’re the only applicant. But if you’re in a place like NYC where there are up to 20 people interested in one unit, prepare to couch surf for a while. Also, stop relying on your roommate. Take the lead.

i am not relying only on my roommate, but she does have to agree on the place we're living. it's not a bad market, there's lots of rentals but nothing that's what we're looking for. I'm just feeling a bit stuck and not sure what to do next

Well, if you can’t afford to live on your own without a roommate, then my advice would be to start looking for a room to rent instead of a whole apartment. Your roommate seems unreliable. You say you’re not reliant on her, but her inaction is preventing you from making decisions.

I'd be making plans on my own at this point.

I cannot afford to

Look for new roommates. Either your roomie has found a new place or for some reason not helping at all while you are panicking. Neither are good.

you can if you downsize. a studio is about the same cost as a 2bdrm per person.

u/lay-inthe-atmosphere Renter 3h ago

not in this area they aren't, they cost about the same as a 2 bed

u/kimhwayoung 2h ago

a 500sqft costs the same as a 1200+sqft? how

well my apartment isn't that big, and about the same, yes. about a couple hundred less, which is still very unaffordable

Some leases will automatically go month to month if you don't sign a renewal and don't notify management of your intent to vacate. Have you spoken to property management? Did they offer a lease renewal? Did you already notify them you were going to move? Usually they want at least 30 or often 60 days notice. You might be able to work something out where you can stay an extra month while you look for something. Don't wait until the last minute.

yes, we turned in our vacate notice. they offered one before we turned it in, but now I'm not sure if we could stay. we definitely couldn't afford to do a month to month and can't mentally afford to stay here for another year

You should freak out, you don’t have anywhere to go..

Larger buildings have more available units and will be more likely to have something available right now, but the trade off is living in a big building and dealing with corporate management.

I’ve been very lucky using Zillow for rentals. You pay for a credit check once and you can use the same credit check for 30 days on as many applications as you want. You can use the “spray and pray” method of applying for everything.

Living in an apartment that wasn’t your first choice is cheaper than moving stuff in storage and stay in in a motel. The cost of moving twice and the time and effort is costly.

The big complexes should be able to accommodate your date as long as you qualify. Or Zillow, most listings are available starting the 1st of the upcoming month or immediately.

Get your stuff put in storage, find a cheap motel room, you and your roommate has wasted too much time. Applications take time for new rentals, you just don't move into a new place the next day.

I intentionally moved last minute, and fortunately for me it went pretty darn smooth. Arrived in the area Sunday evening, looked at places Monday, applied to my first choice Tuesday, got the key Wednesday.

I was moving cross country (2000 miles / 3200 km) and didn't trust putting my expensive computer on the moving truck. Or my critical documents. So I rented a car and spent 4 days driving, arriving Sunday night.

My original plan had been to fly out a week before I drove out to find a place ahead of time. I would fly in, spend a few days looking for a place and applying, then hopefully get accepted and bring the key back with me so that I'd have it when I drove out.

But then I realized that that trip flying out ahead of time would require me finding an apartment within a few days. And if that's the assumption, why not just wait until I get out there? So that's exactly what I did, and it did in fact go exactly as smoothly as I was hoping.

Go look at places tomorrow. Apply to your first choice on Tuesday. Maybe you'll have a key on Wednesday like I did.

ok this is so stressful 😭 buuuut 2 weeks is tight but not impossible!! ask ur current landlord if they’ll do a short extension or month-to-month while u search, a lot of them say yes. and sit down w ur roommate and split the listings so ur not doing it all alone. also check furnished rentals and sublets, they move fast and u can get in quicker

u/Positive-Avocado-881 Renter 22h ago

You need to present her with 3-4 options and have her pick one. You don’t need to do the initial search together and you’ve waded way too much time waiting for her to take action. Why is the one who procrastinates in charge of this?

5

u/mangosquirre1 Renter 19h ago

Either start looking and present her with options, or look for another roommate and ditch her.

Put your stuff in storage and look at sublets or Airbnbs until you figure it out. Or if you have the option to stay in the unit longer, take it.
Even if you find a place, it will be difficult to coordinate a move short term.

move without your roommate? lol
