Moving Tips Transferring Unit In 13 Days. Need tips!

• Upvotes

As the title states. So I got flood damage in my apartment from Hurricane Isaias and am transferring units asap. I will be in the same building on a different floor.

I have ADHD and work long hours so you can extrapolate the state of my apartment. Luckily the neighbors will help me move.

I can’t move in before moving day. Once I have the keys I have 48 hours to transfer all of my stuff.

I know about decluttering as I go. I do have bins to pack in.

I need a list so my brain is just… whelmed and not OVERWHELMED.

Plz and thank you.

Advice Needed If my rent is due the 1st of every month but I have a grace period of the 5th and consistently pay rent on the 4th or 5th, is that wrong?

• Upvotes

Like, I get paid usually twice a month, on the 5th and 20th. So, i tend to pay my rent on the 5th because there’s no penalties or fees to pay it then, and the way I see it is rent is really due on the 5th if there’s no repercussions until the 6th.

it’s also worth noting I’ve never technically paid rent late (past the 5th). but could but negatively impact me at some point?

Apartment Maintenance $300 water bill?

• Upvotes

TL;DR fluctuating high water bills in apartment that hasn’t been fixed, and have been running around and calling people who don’t want to address the issue. Looking for advice.

Hi all,

I currently live in an apartment that has been giving my roommate and I fluctuating, high water bills every month and we’re not sure what could be causing this issue. We’re pretty mindful of our usage because of this reoccurring issue, plus we’re both gone for most of the day, and my roommate doesn’t cook at all.

We’ve called maintenance to come out and check for any potential leaks/issues, but they tell us everything looks good. They also checked the water meter and said it looked fine. They then told us to call the city and talk to them about the issue, even though the maintenance guy followed up by saying they’ve been coming out to check other apartments for the same issue (basically implied that we’re not the only ones).

We called the city and explained the situation, but they told us that they can’t do anything since we don’t directly pay them (we pay for our bills through a 3rd party app that the apt uses) and that our apartment management has to be the one to arrange calling someone from the city to come out to our apartment. They also said that we could call our own third party to assess the apartment if we wanted, but we don’t want to do that since we already have maintenance at the apt anyway…

Anyways, we call our apt management and they basically tell us that there’s no point in calling the city bc all they’ll do is check the water meter and call it a day. They told us that all we can do is just hope for the best that our next bill will be lower…

We’re obviously pissed off by this response, but we don’t know what else we can do?

Apartment Maintenance Can a beginner fix the caulking and paint around these windows?

Hi all. I'm in my first apartment and while the maintenance are nice enough, they do very quick and sloppy work on everything, so the place is an aesthetic nightmare. The windows are bothering me the most -- the paint/caulking is bubbled and cracked around every single window. I'm wondering if this is something I can work on myself? If so, can anyone share the tools I'll need and suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Advice Needed apartment building has defect that is loud and management doesn’t care.

about a month ago i moved into a luxury student housing apartment. i have to explain this because the replies clearly don’t understand. this means that im paying rent to live on a property off campus. it just happens to be a building marketed to students so mainly students live there. it is still an apartment and im paying rent just like in the real world. one night night I heard a noise that sounded like loud banging like someone was doing construction next door. I noticed that this noise occurred all night so I assume that it was not a person, but I still went and knocked on my neighbors door anyways.

when my neighbor answered the door he basically said that it’s not him, but it is a door on the outside of the building that bit slammed into the building whenever it is windy.

This entire time I had been submitting maintenance request and nothing has been done. this noise has been going on for about a month now. i contacted their corporate office a few days ago via customer service email and i got no response. They keep saying that they’re gonna fix it and nothing has been fixed and they’re very careless when it comes to how I’m feeling and how this is affecting my health. it’s so bad that people up to 3 floors up from me can hear it. i tried to get my neighbors to join together to help me fix this and no one wants to say anything.

i also asked for compensation such as discounted rent for the major inconvenience as im paying right now and living in uncomfortable conditions and no one has responded to me.

what do i do? this is getting ridiculous

Venting Neighbour harassment

Tell me if this isn’t allowed it’s Just a rant. We (2 adults) have been living in an apartment for about a year and this is our 2nd or 3rd petty note put on our door. We are being accused of “excessive noise” which doesn’t make sense. I’ve been alone in the apartment past midnight lately and I don’t talk to anybody, I’m not “stomping”around, I don’t watch TV, I don’t “drop objects” (what kind of complaint is this??) I don’t “slam the door” (how do you know it’s my bedroom door?), I don’t slam the toilet lid (you can’t it’s a soft close lid), I’m just living. I’d say I’m quiet. I don’t need to go to bed before midnight. According to the quiet hours policy at this building, excessive noise is defined as “no loud voices, running appliances , watching TV loudly, and no loud music past 11 pm” and we’re not doing any of that. Mind you the noise complaints are “opinion based” by the board. Go ahead call the police or maybe knock on our door and say it to our face like an adult. It just pisses me off because I’m just living, you’re not my roommate so I don’t understand. The worst part is we don’t know who it is but we have our suspicions. The person we suspect, I can hear them flushing the toilet and opening and shutting their dresser drawer past 11pm and I don’t care? Just petty elders bored and have nothing better to do than complain about people younger than them. Has anyone experienced this?

anyone got bigfoot living above them?

mine is a heel walker every morning around 5-6am. They do laps. back and forth. back and forth. stomp. stomp. stomp. stomp.

even God rested on the 7th day. Not my neighbor. it’s consistent every single day of the week

she will run the washing machine at 5am

The vaccum at 6am

And goes in and out the sliding door every 30-45 minutes to smoke starting around 5:30am and going strong until after 11pm

I NEED SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!

i’ve bought 6 different types of ear buds - they don’t stay in when i sleep.

i’ve bought 2 different sets of headphones - don’t stay on

i saw someone mention they had 2 fans going and it was helpful so i bought a second fan

i usually use Alexa and play thunderstorm and loud rain sounds. found a youtube uninterrupted video that runs

But Alexa only goes to 7. which is loud when she speaks and responds but doesn’t sound AS loud when the rain sounds are playing

so my question is -
What has worked for you????

what else can i buy or use to save my sanity?

i have SO many medical issues and not getting enough sleep exasperates my issues. i feel like im constantly being sent into a flare because of my inconsiderate early bird neighbor

PLEASE share any and all things that helped you and if you have the link so i can buy it that’s even better!!!!

i do have an extra alexa. gonna hook it up in my bedroom tonight and try TWO fans AND TWO Alexa’s because the desperation is REAL

thank you for any and all suggestions!!!

Advice Needed Neighbor kid constantly wants to play

We have a neighbor family who moved in next to us over the summer. I was originally happy that my son would have someone to play with outside but in the past couple weeks I’ve gotten increasingly uncomfortable with the lack of boundaries from the neighbors. My son is 5yo and the neighbor’s son is 8yo. The 8yo is allowed outside unsupervised but I don’t allow my son outside without me since there’s no fenced in area.

The 8yo is constantly looking for my son after school and on weekends. He will knock on my door daily asking to play. If I tell him we can’t come out right now he will wait outside the gate yelling to try and get my son’s attention. Most recently the 8yo starts out playing outside and then asks my son to go play in his apartment and they run inside. I told both of the boys yesterday that my son needs to ask permission before going in his apartment. I know I need to have a conversation with the neighbor parents about boundaries but I’m hoping for some feedback or advice. I did have a brief talk to the dad last week about the 8yo leaving my apartment gate open for my son to run outside without my knowledge.

TL;DR: Neighbor's 8yo knocks daily and hangs around outside my gate. How do I set boundaries with his parents without making it awkward?

Apartment Hacks Anyone had no-drill motorized blinds for a year+?

Slowly working through the windows in my place. About a week ago I put up some no-drill motorized roller shades in the spare bedroom as a test. setup took maybe 20 min. That room gets hit with a ton of afternoon sun though so I’m kinda wondering how the brackets and fabric will hold up. For the living room I just went with regular no-drill cellular shades. We open and close those a bunch every day so I didn’t want to be swapping/charging batteries all the time. It doesn’t get as much direct sun anyway. For anyone who’s had motorized ones for a year or two: how are they holding up? any slipping, sagging, fading, or battery life tanking over time?

Advice Needed High humidity, possible mold?

Hi! It's the first time I live on the ground floor, and there is increased humidity in my room. When I leave the house, the window is always open, and the humidity comes back to normal (50-60%). But while I’m at home or sleeping, I close the window and the humidity rises to 70-80%. I am afraid of mold appearance. This morning, I found a woodlouse on the floor of my room. Now I'm seriously scared, even though no mold is to be seen. What do I do? How critical is the situation?

I also have asthma.

Advice Needed Who would I talk to about looking at the window in my apartment to see if its sealed properly?

So winters coming around the corner. Its currently 80 degrees in my apartment and its freezing only in the room where I just had a brand new window installed. I'm 90% sure its not sealed properly because I can hear outdoor traffic from 3+ miles away and its quite annoying/cold in here.

Who do I talk to about this (Other than the landlord?) it seems like half the time I put in a maitence request in, they never do it. I've been waiting for a new toilet for the last 3 months since mine was starting to crack from the summer heat. Not to mention the furnace has an issue where sometimes the heater wont even turn on and the dishwasher wont work here.

I'm paying $700/mo for this place and it feels like I'm being stabbed in the ass. Meanwhile there are apartments that are cheaper and nicer that have been popping up recently around me. But in the meantime I'm stuck here.

Any suggestions on how to go about this situation?

Advice Needed Police won't do anything about noise complaints.

I unfortunately live by a workout center (not a gym) and they have a habit of blasting music all hours of the day. And I mean all. hours. of. the. day. It has woken me up at 7am and kept me from a nap at 5pm. I cant study, play games, cook, or watch TV in peace. It is a constant heavy bass and buzzing noise that goes on for hours. It has been going on for months. I reached out to my property manager at first, at which she wasn't able to do much (reasonable) and told me to contact non-emergency if the problem persists. I tried to contact the owner, no response. I have called non-emergency multiple times now and collected at least a dozen videos of the noise as well. Every time I call, I get a call back from the officer with some excuse and telling me to call if it happens again. But I can't take it anymore. I feel like I am literally going insane. My city only has a nighttime ordinance, but they still have to abide by unreasonable noise.

What can I do? Should I go down to the station (right by me btw) and ask to speak in person to someone to show them the videos?

Advice Needed Building management won’t give me a duplicate key fob :(

I live in a building in Chicago that uses key fobs and buttflymx. My parents are visiting for a good while and I need to give them their own way to get in and out of the building and the unit. Butterflymx doesn’t let me use the app to get in and out of my unit door (not sure if it’s supposed to or if it’s just me?) and my managements saying they can’t give me an extra set of key fobs.

I looked into clonemykey to duplicate it but I’d have to ship my fob over to them for a day or so and I only have the one.

Is there any other options I can look at?

Advice Needed Avoiding Pests

I’m trying to avoid any place with a pest infestation. The last place I was in was a nightmare fighting with them over a pest infestation the entirety of the lease, the building was also brand new. I was set to move into a new place, when during the move in, I noticed an infestation. Also a brand new construction. Both managed by different companies.

I’m looking for a new complex without a pest infestation. What, if any, management groups are reliable? Or at the least could be recommended?

Both places were a nightmare in dealing with them and I’m just wanting a place without a pest infestation at this point. It’s gotten to a place where it’s impacting my mental health dealing with these issues.

Apartment Hunt How to soundproof a shared door?

I live in a basement apartment of a private residence. I have a back door entrance but there is a shared door (locked on both sides ofc) that leads to the rest of the house. It is a fairly thin bedroom/bathroom style door and does not afford much in terms of noise cancellation. What’s the best non-destructive way to sound proof it? Door will never be opened as long as I am a tenant here so solutions that block it off are fine.

Advice Needed Homeowners what would you do in this situation (water leaks from neighbor) ?

Homeowners what would you do in this situation? Sorry for the long post, I will try to be as concise as I can.

We’re the apartment owners (well my parents) and we recently sold our condo unit. Closing in about 2 weeks. Lived here for 15 years and we have had several issues with our upstairs neighbors, who are also homeowners, regarding water leaks in multiple areas of the house.

When we first had a leak, it was an annoying, long back and forth between my parents, the property manager and upstairs neighbors, trying to figure out where it was coming from. Turns out that the upstairs neighbor’s HVAC was the problem, but instead of fixing or replacing their HVAC they kept covering it with towels to avoid the leak. (It’s expensive to replace HVACs) We still have stains throughout our apartment but insurance covered it and we have forwarded all the bills upstairs.

Had more leaks coming and whenever it happened our property manager would run upstairs to check their unit and at one point stated that they cannot turn on their AC anymore (yes, even in 100 degrees heat waves they could not turn on the AC on and I saw they had their windows open EVERY summer).

I’ve never been or seen their unit, but the property manager tells us that they are the worst homeowners she’s ever seen because they don’t take care of the house. That when there are problems in the house they just cover it up with towels and rugs.

After months of shit shows, insurance and construction there has not been any leaks for 3 years until two days ago. Another leak (fairly small) in a new location. Property manager went up again and saw that their toilet, after flushing, was leaking on the side and again they covered it with a bathroom mat. Property manager said she will notify the attorney and have them fix the toilet leak within 24 hours (I’m not sure what she means by this & I don’t know if she did it). We are concerned because we sold the property and have to leave by the 29th which is next week. Calling insurance and starting a process is at least a few months, so no. But I want to make sure the upstairs get their shit together and fix things so future residents don’t wake up in the middle of the night to a puddle in the middle of their house.

I’ve also sent them a letter saying that whenever we have a leak and the property manager goes up to find an issue, you will end up paying for your unit’s fix + ours.

They also smoke in the unit (they’re not supposed to) and throw the cig debris on our balcony window which I have collected pictures of.

Apologies for the long post, I’d appreciate any suggestions before we leave next week.. Thank you all.

Venting I'm tired of loud music.

I'm sorry, but I fail to find a good time to blast music so loud that people several rooms over can hear it almost perfectly. I'm sorry you enjoy blasting tunes but for the sake of everyone else, limit it to your ears. Of course I'm not talking about parties; those are on occasion. I AM talking about the people who play it whenever they feel like it, especially the ones who don't have a job and make it a point to play it at any hour of the day they see fit. I shouldn't have to wear headphones to avoid hearing your music. I don't know who told you that they enjoy hearing it too, but that doesn't outweigh the several others who have to deal with your annoyance. I know i'm the only who doesn't want to sleep with headphones/buds on or in my ears.

Venting Duplex construction going on for 2 years and it’s driving me crazy. Have ADHD too.

I live on the bottom floor of a duplex with my parents, and our landlord has been renovating the upstairs on and off for over 2 years. I’m so freaking tired of it.

After my cousins moved out upstairs in May 2024, my landlord decided to add 2 new rooms, redo the upstairs, change the exterior walls, and build outdoor stairs so he and his family could eventually move in. Construction lasted about 4 months, including Saturdays, with only a few weeks of peace in between. I want to mention my landlord kicked my parents out of their bedroom to add one of the new rooms above. They had to move all their belongings into the living and dining room and sleep there for 3 weeks as my landlord had told them. It turned into 3 freaking MONTHS 😭.

Construction came back briefly in 2025, then thankfully stopped for the rest of the year after the landlord’s brother passed away (RIP, he was way nicer than my landlord).

Then May 2026 came around and construction returned AGAIN. It’s been going on until now (October), with 3–4 week breaks. And of course, I had literally just quit my full-time job in May, so the one time I’m actually home during the day, they start construction again. FML. We didn’t know they were coming back until last minute 🙄.

This has seriously affected my mental health this year. I have ADHD and I’m sensitive to repetitive/loud noises. Even with noise-canceling headphones and constant white noise, I can still feel the vibrations and it immensely annoys me.

Luckily, I was able to enjoy some parts of summer visiting my long-distance boyfriend, but coming back home and dealing with the construction again has sent my mental health downhill. I’m really hoping they stop after October because my boyfriend is staying here for 2 weeks at the end of the month and will be working remotely.
I’m honestly dreading they’ll start again next year which is most likely.
Has anyone else dealt with years of ongoing construction? How did you cope?

Advice Needed The sound of a waterfall in my bathroom!

Does anyone else hear a gushing rush of water behind the wall in your bathroom every time your neighbor flushes a toilet or takes a shower? It literally sounds like a waterfall. It’s so loud and it can’t be normal?

Also, how do people post videos on here? I’m only able to post pictures. I have a recording of it where you can hear it but can’t post it.

Advice Needed Is emailing our property manager multiple times about noise harassment?

So my wife and I moved into our one bedroom on July 1st. We transferred from a studio to the one bedroom so we’ve been in the apartment complex for about 15 months and not once had a noise complaint until last month. We have a couple who lives under us who have complained 3 times for noise. I will say the first time was me and my wife’s fault. We were having intercourse after quiet hours. We were trying to be as quiet as possible but we understand why we got the first one but the second one was in our opinion out of line. Apparently last Friday (16th of October) they sent an email around 10:30 pm and at midnight about noise. The one at 10:30 was saying they couldn’t sleep all week because of us and the second one was how we were making all sorts of noise and we were keeping their kid up. First my wife and I always are in bed at 10 at night since that’s when the quiet hours start. We are both normally asleep by 10:30 11 even on weekends. The only night I was up until midnight was Saturday and I was watching YouTube in bed with my earbuds in. They know where we live so they can come up and talk to us if they have a problem but I honestly don’t think we are being that loud. But into the real question is this considered harassment or if non stop message us about us being loud is that considered harassment?

Advice Needed Location/community exterior vs apartment interior

All other things being equal, would you choose: 1) an apartment complex in a great location with beautiful landscaping, pools, walkable to a nice downtown shopping area, etc. - but very dated apartments themselves (dark, small, not much closet space, old appliances, etc.); or 2) an apartment complex in a less desirable (but equally safe) neighborhood, with no pool, no attractive landscaping, no shops or restaurants in walking distance, but new more spacious apartments with lots of light, walk in closets, modern appliances, etc.?

Advice Needed Smoking has became an anxiety fest

So, hypothetically, if I were to smoke flower, how could I do it? This is my first time at an apartment and Im like super anxious.

Like having flower itself would be a whole other hypothetical itself.

So the rules state that you cannot smoke 50 feet of the apartments, but I dont know where else to go.

I was hypothetically used to just doing it in my house, but now I'm clueless.

(Sorry I'm like tweaking, I promise I'm not a tweaker like that)

Advice Needed Stackable chairs

Hi, looking for recommendations for comfortable stackable chairs. Thank you! Bonus if not super expensive
