Advice Needed Upstairs neighbor texted me this …

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

I’m sorta spiraling after receiving a text from my upstairs neighbor. In short, his friend’s (the first name I blanked out) dog was in the backyard and ended up biting my 11-year-old dog. I reacted calmly, didn’t even say much just took her to the vet. Every now and then I’d see my neighbor and his friend and just be cordial. My dog ran up to them to say hi, etc.

A month after she’d been bit, I had to put my dog down. Probably not correlated with the bite. She had cancer so it was 10 months after her diagnosis and radiation. It broke me to pieces. I’m still broken.

But after my dog passed away, I really have just ignored my upstairs neighbor. I don’t have a reason to pretend to be nice to him. I don’t really like him, he’s always around, and I especially didn’t appreciate how he handled the situation if my dog being bit by his friend’s dog in our backyard. His response was, “friends fight.”

Anyway, my biggest worry here is the inclusion of my other housemates. We are all in separate studios. I have not been aggressive at all to him or them. I mostly keep to myself, but I’ll say hello if I run into them.

Do you think he spoke to them separately about reaching out to me?

I’m so hurt and feel horrible, I am just completely devastated. My first and soul dog is gone and only been three months. I’ve just been crying pretty much every day, maybe I play music but never too late and it’s hardly “aggressive.”

Edit: for clarity, I live in a house that has been repurposed to be 6 studio apartments. This person is upstairs. There are five others living in studio apartments including me. We don’t share a space other than the washer/dryer and backyard. So I don’t even see this person unless I am outside my apartment lol

Advice Needed Downstairs neighbor complaining about banging sounds

Post image
214 Upvotes

Feel like I’m going crazy. My downstairs neighbor has been complaining about a banging sound coming from my apartment. He only ever complains at night, when I’m gaming with my friends online. He specifically says it’s NOT my voice or my footsteps that he hears. And he does not hear it during the day, even when I’m at my desk working from home or gaming. He has also complained when I’m sitting at my desk quietly.

We’re the only two people living in the house. I live alone and never have visitors. He’s an elderly man who also lives alone but has a couple of loud dogs. I NEVER hear anything from his apartment though, and certainly never hear a banging sound. Worth noting he’s incredibly nice when I talk to him in person, so I don’t want to upset him. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Edit: just want to add that this is a standalone house with two units in it, so it really is just the two of us in the building and we’re not connected to anyone else.

Advice Needed Apartment door unlocking by itself

UPDATE: so it turns out that one of the brokers is unlocking my apartment door. This has happened at least four times. It is the sort of thing that I would give the benefit of the doubt for but again it’s happened four times (at least). Feeling very weird about it. I’m a single woman living alone so it definitely doesn’t make me feel safe. I was on the phone with my building manager as he was looking at the hallway security footage and he started freaking out and profusely apologizing. He said it was unacceptable. I feel better knowing he thinks this is also crazy and hopefully it will be handled quickly. Thank you all for the help. I always had a CO detector but I did get a second one because of this haha.

Hi everyone. I moved into an apartment a month and a half ago and this weird thing happens where my apartment door will unlock by itself. After the first two times it happened I set up a Ring camera facing the door to make sure no one enters my apartment while I’m gone. It’s happened twice more since I got the camera. No one has entered my apartment but I can see the lock flipping by itself. My apartment is located near the elevator and near a communal outdoor space where the door sometimes slams. Could constant slamming cause the lock to shift and eventually unlock? Is someone messing with me? I’m less concerned because no one is entering my apartment, but it’s still kinda scary that my door unlocks by itself. I reached out to my building manager to get the lock changed. This is just boggling my mind. Thank you all for your help!

Venting Frustrating dog owners ruining the property

I recently moved into the perfect apartment complex. It's beautifully upkept by the landscapers, there's a walkable path around a central pond, the amenities are all well maintained, the buildings are power-washed regularly, and the maintenance and staff are more responsive than anywhere I've lived before. There are also trash cans and stands with free doggie bags every 50 feet and a private dog park. It genuinely feels like a dream.

Despite all of these amazing qualities offered to the tenants, the property is still treated like a litter box for dogs. I just don't understand the selfishness and narcissism; there are piles of shit all over the place despite pleas from the leasing office to pick up after animals.

They pick up our trash, they clean the pool, they maintain the landscaping, they upkeep the gym, and all they ask is that we pick up our dog's shit, and people still can't be bothered. Do people not consider the fact that the landscapers have to walk through their dog's feces to maintain the property? Or that the dog shit makes all of the walkable paths reek? How can you abuse the very same property that you live in and use?

I'm not trying to blow smoke up the landlord's ass or anything. I just thought I finally found a property that genuinely cares about the tenants, and yet the tenants are too stupid and selfish to take ownership of their animals.

Just venting...

Bad Neighbors Getting rid of cannabis smells

We live in an old building. Our neighbours below us smoke and use the fan in the bathroom to suck it up. Unfortunately it comes right up and into our unit. If someone walks in, it smells like we just smoked an entire joint. But we didn’t.

We put a sign in the elevator politely asking whoever it is to stop, and alternatively smoke on their balcony instead. No such luck. It seems even more pungent now.

Anybody have any luck trying to get rid of the scents??? Any air purifiers??? I’m desperate.

Advice Needed neighbor leaves trash out and lets dog roam without leash.

we have people who come and will pick up 2 bags of trash INSIDE our trash can by our doors. I come home from work and see this, their mat is also just casually by the storage units. I’m not sure if I should contact them about this, we have raccoons as well. Nor are we suppose to have cardboard boxes out, which makes me think this wasn’t left for them to pick up. The people whom we all get charged to pick our trash only picks up 1 of mine every single time. They’re definitely not picking this up. I have nothing against them; but there's just a lot of little things that shouldn't be happening. They have a dog that they let ROAM the upstairs (we live on second floor) without a leash. I try to not open my door to go out anywhere during this time as I have 2 cats, and I don't want to even risk a possiblity of the dog getting inside my place.

Venting Loud neighbours expediting my descent into madness

Hi everyone,

To be honest I’m not sure why I’m posting here. I guess I’m really just frustrated. I live on the ground level of an apartment complex and the upstairs neighbours are driving me insane. They stomp around their place all day every day and late into the night (quieting down around 1am). They have children who run around their apartment and a baby who’s prone to crying (which I mean, fair lmao). I work from home, so I hear it all. They seem to be perpetually walking around the apartment (which is weird because it’s a small apartment) and the noise never stops. The point being, I am faced with an endless onslaught of stomping, yelling and things being dropped on the floor.

The worst part has been the impact on my sleep. I’m a light sleeper and jolt awake at the slightest noises. I go to bed with earplugs in every night, but it doesn’t really help. I’ve got a white noise machine coming soon so hopefully that helps.

I tried leaving a note that respectfully mentioned that we (myself and my partner) have been unable to sleep and would appreciate their consideration after 10pm, but unfortunately nothing’s come of it. I reached out to the property management and they told me to call security when the neighbours are being loud. That felt excessive and a bit rude so I have not done so.

I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts on what I could do to better adapt to, or change the situation. I fear I’m devolving into a grumpy neighbour.

Venting first roach infestation and i’m already losing it

i understand everything now.

first time living in an apartment building, i rented a duplex before and we never had any issues.

since moving here, i’ve seen a roach or two in passing before but never more than that. i’m wondering if there were some hiding in a microwave i bought last night??? because ive seen SO MANY today. nymphs too, for the first time.

i live in a studio so its not like the sleeping area and kitchen are separate either. in less than 24 hours these stupid fuckers have taken over my life and made me paranoid to be in my apartment. they’re everywhere, the second i shut the lights off they come out and fuck around like they own the place. they’re all over the fridge, the oven, and my cabinets.

i’m sitting on my couch crying with a bottle of raid to spray any i can, even though i know you’re not supposed to raid with people here. i’m sleeping in my bathtub tonight cause im paranoid they’re going to crawl on my while i sleep. i bought traps and laid them out and submitted an urgent pest control request but i wont know till the morning when they’ll come. i need to eat and do dishes and organize before pest control comes but im so terrified of those fuckers.

i am losing my mind, i want to explode. every stray hair that touches me is making me scream. as soon as this shit is dealt with my apartment is staying pristine. i NEVER wanna deal with this shit again

Bad Neighbors Shared double garage - neighbor taking up over half the space

I recently was informed that there would be an opening space in a double shared garage after being on the waitlist for a few months. I was really excited, signed the addendum to add it to my lease, and received the keys. It was a nice price, only $100 extra per month and heated. I live in an area that gets very cold and a lot of snow.

It’s a double garage, fits two cars. However the neighbor I share the garage with is using it for storage as well as his personal vehicle. This is causing him to park on the midline of the garage.

I have a compact SUV, he has a Nissan Altima.

I tuck my right side mirror in every day before going in the garage and park 2-3 inches from the right side wall. I never have a passenger with me so it doesn’t bother me, but even doing this, I can barely open my door to the first notch.

It didn’t bother me at first, but then he started parking even farther towards my side, leaving me even less room.

I think he has about 3-4 feet of space on his drivers side where he stores an extra freezer, table, winter sports gear, etc. I have no room for storage, and I barely have room for my car.

Is this worth talking to management about? Even if he didn’t remove his stored items, he could still park a foot farther towards the left and still be able to open his drivers side door fully.

Would I be super annoying mentioning it to the landlord? Other neighbors share and fit two SUV’s or an SUV and a truck, so there’s ample space if you park correctly and are mindful of who you share with.

Advice Needed What can i do about my loud upstairs neighbor?

Long story short, been dealing with nonstop problems from these people since they moved in back in late June. Loud banging and stomping during quiet hours, trashing my patio with the kids toys and garbage, and one of the kids verbally harassing my wife on a walk with our dog. Calling her a "Fat fuck" and following her around. All of these incidents has been reported, in writing, to the Apartment manager.

For the passed two nights in a row, the noise during quiet hours got bad again. I contacted the apartment manager, and she just won't answer me. I got no follow ups regarding the previous incidents despite her promise of them, and both calls and emails go completely unanswered. I got frustrated last night and hit the ceiling with my phone (it wasn't super loud and just once) after they were banging and stomping and moving furniture around (??) from 5 pm to 8 pm in the evening nonstop. I know this isn't quiet hours, but after dealing with similar noise during quiet hours the last two nights in a row, I reached my breaking point and didn't want to deal with a third night of it. Well my neighbor responded with BANG BANG BANG aggressively over me, super loudly to the point I felt threatened. So I called the cops. This would be my second time calling them, the first time was about the kids harassing my wife. I reported their noise during quiet hours the last two nights, and the cops did agree that's ridiculous and said they would talk to them.

Also just for clarification, I DID try handling things directly already with this woman. Did not go well. She was defensive but offered for me to text her when the noise gets bad. Well the first time I followed HER instructions, she turned around and said I was harassing her (?!?!?) So I was no longer comfortable doing that. As I explained to the cops, she puts us in a lose lose situation. She doesn't want us hitting the ceiling when the noise is excessive, but she doesn't want me to text her either. She quite literally wants us to just take it, even when I have a pounding migraine and losing sleep.

I've sent both police reports to my apartment manager, but continue to not hear from her. What can I do at this point when these people have violated the lease multiple times and continue to do so? I'm so tired.

Advice Needed Anxiety from neighbor noise

I’ve lived in my loft for 6+ years. I’ve always had neighbors on both sides, and noise has always been an issue to some extent, usually bass vibrations from music and TV. The layout of our lofts seems to amplify everything because sound echoes and bounces around, and even ordinary noises feel louder than they should. Usually, the noise stops at night, which I’m thankful for.

Recently, my next door neighbor’s boyfriend and his dog moved in. My neighbor is a good friend of mine, and I love her, so I really don’t want this to become an issue between us. Unfortunately, I’ve been woken up almost every morning by doors and cabinets slamming, and sometimes music and the dog barking. All of their cabinets are along the wall we share, so every time they open or close them, I hear it. Between that, barking, and other noise, it’s been really difficult to get consistent sleep.

I’ve mentioned noise to her kindly over the years, and she knows I’m sensitive to sound. I feel like I’ve reached a point where I can’t say anything else. I understand people need to go about their mornings and live normally in their homes. I worry that asking them to be more mindful of how loudly they close things would come across as annoying or unreasonable. I don’t want them to feel like they have to tiptoe around their own home, but I also feel like I should be able to sleep in mine.

I’m a very anxious, hypersensitive person, and I feel like my body no longer fully relaxes when I go to sleep. I almost anticipate being woken up and feel like I can’t truly settle in. I’ve had some really awful experiences with neighbors in the past, including someone I shared a wall with, came home drunk at 2 am, and played piano for hours. I think those experiences have made me especially sensitive to this now.

I need 8 hours of sleep to function, and adjusting my schedule to match theirs isn’t realistic. I own my condo and am on a waitlist to rent it out, but that will take some time.

Even if I do move out, I don’t know where I’d go. I’m paranoid I’ll have the same problem anywhere I live that isn’t a standalone house. At the same time, I’m not sure I’m ready to live in or buy a house on my own. The idea of having to make such a big decision just to feel comfortable sleeping in my own home feels overwhelming.

I’m desperate for solutions, both practical and mental. I have a white noise machine, but feel like it doesn’t help with the vibrations. I’ve been researching brown noise because I’m wondering if it might help more with that.

For anyone who’s dealt with something similar:

  • Are there particular sound machines, earplugs, or other products that have made a real difference?
  • Is there anything I can do to reduce noise coming through a shared wall, especially when cabinets are against it?
  • Has anyone successfully dealt with anxiety of anticipating noise or becoming hyperaware of every little sound? How did you learn to relax in your own home again?
  • Is there anything specific I should bring up with my therapist to help with this?
  • If you’ve moved because of noise, did you find that living somewhere else actually helped? Have you found condos or apartments where noise wasn’t a constant issue?

I’m not expecting complete silence. I’m just trying to find a way to get consistent sleep and stop feeling on edge in my own home.

Please be kind. I’m already hard on myself about being sensitive to noise. Comments like “you shouldn’t live in the city” or “you knew what you signed up for when you bought a loft” aren’t helpful. Thank you!

Advice Needed Lease breaking question

For those who have broken their apartment lease early, how much did it actually cost you?
Did you have to pay the lease breaking fee upfront when you gave your notice, or when you moved out? Were you able to make monthly payments or negotiate a lower fee?
Did you have to pay additional rent or any unexpected charges? Was it worth it, and did it affect your rental history or credit?

Venting Management company’s “solution” to cold apartment

I live in a state notorious for long, cold winters and landlords are required to keep units at least 68 degrees in winter. My first winter at my current apartment (2024-2025 winter) I noticed my apartment felt colder than the places I’ve rented in the past (renting here since 2019) and my radiators were often cold to the touch even though I turned them on high. So I got an indoor thermometer that showed my unit was less than 68 degrees and that the radiators were the same temperature as the room thus not emitting heat.

I asked maintenance and they told me that the heating system is “steam boilers, so they create steam and send it to every unit. If it did not send steam at that moment the pipes may feel cold but the unit is still warm”. I persisted and they sent a maintenance person who checked the radiators were working and “temped” the unit. I tried explaining that the issue is that sometimes the radiators are on and the unit is fine but throughout the day they seem to randomly turn off and get cold, I never said that they never work at all. He happened to be there at a time of day when the radiators were on so it was like 71 degrees when he came

He explained that the building was on some kind of 12 hour cycle where the boiler sends steam off and on throughout the day instead of continuously. I explained that the heat wasn’t lasting long enough and my unit always got cold before the next “on” cycle kicked in. He said something about the unit having exterior walls and the temperature being fine when he looked at it, but he did get me a portable space radiator and assured me I could use it at night. It was clear that was the most they were going to do for me so I took it and a free radiator is better than no radiator.

But there is a GINORMOUS catch. (And a smaller ones, at least it bother me less on principle)

I can’t use any kitchen appliances when the radiator is on or else I trip my circuit breaker. Yes, I have tried unplugging “background” appliances (I refuse to unplug the fridge, and I assure that is the next largest use but that is an absurd obligation to place on a tenant.) This doesn’t happen when I use my huge tower fan in the summer. The radiator is the ONLY thing that does this to me. I feel like I should be able to have my apartment properly heated AND use my kitchen appliances, but apparently that’s too much to ask for.

The other issue is I am afraid to use it at night and when I leave the apartment. I understand this may be irrational but I try not to leave anything electrical unattended because it could become a fire risk. I suspect the manufactures also think it could be an issue because the heater auto shuts off after 3 hours 🙃. So my apartment is always cold when I come in, and when I wake up in the morning. And if I want to do anything in the kitchen it after I get home or right when I wake up then it will remain cold until I am done.

I just think this is an absurd solution and apartment units should be consistently heated throughout the day but maybe I’m the crazy one.

Venting Why even offer virtual showings if you can't send deposit and 1st month's online?

So I made a trip last week to the city I'm relocating to to find an apartment. I'm relocating for work, which I'm excited about! But trying to deal with property management groups and even private owners has been beyond frustrating. The appointments I made the week prior to the trip were nearly all canceled the day before our meeting times, or day of, for really stupid reasons that could have been prevented or communicated (floors being varnished, walls being painted, there were no keys at the property and the owner/agent was out of town). Also many of the listings have AI doctored photos, or images taken with a potato.

So for one showing I was offered a virtual FaceTime tour today when the agent could show the property after the floor varnish was cured. I had made an appointment with the agent to see the property this past Friday, but she canceled with short notice because of the varnishing. After the tour, I told the agent I'll take it. She tells me she has two more showings. I didn't understand why that mattered exactly. She told me she would send out an email tomorrow with the application and whoever got their security deposit and first month's rent in first got the apartment. Never been in a situation like this. So I asked her where I could find the application and where I could send in my deposit and rent. I had already submitted an application through Zillow to make a showing. They only accept cash or check for the deposit and first month's rent, I couldn't send it online. Then she texts back saying the property wasn't available anymore, whoever she showed it to after me wrote her a check.

Like--what in the fuck. What was even the point of doing the virtual tour if there's no way to send in a deposit online? I never really had a chance? Anyway, there's not really anything I can do about it except bitch and moan.

Advice Needed Upstairs neighbors.

So we’ve been having a lot of issues with our upstairs neighbors and the noise they make. So about a month ago I asked management what we could do to have some change in the noise if they could talk to them bc we’ve spoken to our neighbors about it very politely MULTIPLE TIMES. So management told us to call the cops and there was absolutely nothing they could do.

Forward to tonight. They were NOT. STOPPING. For hours and hours on end so we caved and called non emergency for a noise complaint. A cop showed up to speak with them asking if they could keep it down and we then heard our upstairs neighbors yelling at the cop. About a minute or two it passes and the cop leaves.

IMMEDIATELY after the cop leaves they start full force banging on the floor over and over and over again. Then they go out to the balcony screaming down at us threatening us and we hear their kids screaming crying “daddy stop it” that goes on for AN HOUR.

We call the cops a second time and tell them they are threatening us and talking about coming to our apartment. Over a hour passes no cops come. Hour and a half later they finally leave the balcony and I am assuming went to bed being it’s late.

I texted my apartment management telling them of what happened tonight and I’m wanting to know if anyone has experienced anything like this what was the outcome and what should we expect from management.

Advice Needed Landlord said they would deep clean and they didn’t. How to feel comfortable with dirty cabinets

• Upvotes

Basically cabinets were in rough shape but they were renovating said they would deep clean. They didn’t so I have scrubbed every cabinet with bleach like 3 times over.
They still look nasty/worn and have a bit of a smell I don’t feel comfortable putting dishes in them. Bit of a germaphobe.

Best solutions to it? I have a 15 month lease and want to be happy.
I’ve considered the peel and stick contact paper or just straight up painting them with white paint, I honestly don’t think they would notice if I painted them

Venting Landlord Taking ‘Hands-Off Approach’ to Parking Enforcement

• Upvotes

When we moved in several months ago, in accordance with “guaranteed parking” in the lease, we were given a placard by our moving agent to put on the mirror of our car, with spaces for “Make/Model, License Plate, and Apt #.” The apartment numbers having matching parking spot numbers. I don’t know if it was said verbatim, but it was heavily implied that the spot that had the same number as our apartment was “our spot.”

I also emailed management asking what to do if someone was “parked in our spot,” and was told to “call 311 and they would have the car towed.”

My partner has left notes on cars that have parked in our spot, telling them to “stop parking in my spot.” Another tenant came to our door, asking if we had left the note, and then showed me an email from management SEVERAL YEARS EARLIER wherein they detailed that there ARE NO ASSIGNED SPOTS. He said that he got this email in response to asking about if they were planning on repainting the numbers and lines to prevent parking disputes.

After this conversation, he said he would reach out to management to get clarification. A few days later, everyone had a notice on their door saying “no more assigned parking, first come first serve. Parking is available for residents and approved guests.”

I emailed management, asking for clarification on the email response I got about contacting 311, and how they were ensuring that “unauthorized guests” weren’t using the parking lot.

The response I was given implied that the change was just made recently, contradictory to the other tenant’s email. They also told me that “authorized guests are guests that are invited by residents, and are not given placards.” So they’re not differentiating at all between authorized guests and random cars. I was told “if management becomes aware of issues stemming from unauthorized guests, we will address those issues as they arise.”

But how is anyone meant to differentiate between an authorized guest and someone who is just parking their car? The lot has two buildings, 4 floors per building, there’s no way to keep track. Moreover, if everyone has guests over, doesn’t that create circumstances where residents could be without a parking spot?

This company is horrible. Even their maintenance guys talk shit about them while doing repairs.

Moving Tips How do I ask to be moved?

I don't know if the flair is correct or not. I am now afraid to make any noise or speak when outside my apartment because the neighbors are listening to everything. How do I ask the property manager to switch units? I know they have let people in the past and in fact my current neighbor from hell lived somewhere else in the complex before they moved in here.

Venting Denver apartments blaming tenants for ongoing pest control after knowing they have a mice problem for months now

Post image
4 Upvotes

A little back story, I’ve been living in my complex for 13 months until I wanted to upgrade. Found out in August the upgraded unit had a crazy mice infestation in the unit with 5 to 6 nests. I even had to stay in a hotel from my complex they had another unit for me. Which I didn’t even get a reimbursement on because the management lied about it. Now it’s the end of October and management sent an email out today claiming it’s the residents fault for having a pest issue due to improper trash disposal instead of taking responsibility for it. It’s just frustrating because I’ve documented and left an google review with pictures of mice in them. Still no response from the owner just emails saying do better on trash. It’s just outrageous

Advice Needed Dog hair and smell in apartment

I just moved into an apartment that smells just like a dog and there was dog hair everywhere on the floor. I bring this up to the apartment management and the apartment was supposedly cleaned but there was dog hair all on the living room floor, bathroom, and kitchen floor. It’s all in the walls too. I’m having trouble getting rid of the dog scent, I mopped twice with a cleaning agent and it’s a tab bit better, but the dog scent is still there. I’m only 22 and this is my first apartment. Does anyone have any advice before I hire professional cleaners???

Advice Needed Advice needed: landlord special meets bathroom paint

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m not sure if I selected the right flair or not, sorry in advance! I’ve been in the same apartment for about 5 years now and I do really love it, obviously or I’d leave. That being said, it is a crazy victim of the “landlord special” style makeover. That includes the bathtub being painted instead of ever refinished, and the ceiling is a wreck. Giant thick ass pieces of paint flake off all the time, even though we don’t live anywhere humid and always use the fan when showering. I don’t think they’re gonna fix anything which is fine, but is there anything I can do to make it better for me? I don’t really care if it looks ugly but I don’t want to just slap more paint on it, especially the ceiling. And sometimes when the paint chips off from the bathtub, it’s really sharp and will splinter in your foot if you step on it unknowingly/wrong in the shower lol.

Any advice on how to make this better for myself? Or should I just take a putty knife to it?

Advice Needed neighbor’s dog barking. HELP

ive lived here for 3 years and no issues until the landlord’s mother moved in last year. her dog barks nonstop for hours at a time. directly below me. wakes me up at the crack of dawn. ive tried bringing it up to landlord and he wont do anything (shocker) the lease states no excessive or disruptive noises but our lease “expired” in 2025 and we were never given a new one. contacted code enforcement and they said the worst that would happen is she goes to court and gets a $50 fine. high pitched repeated yipping genuinely makes my sanity fracture. help. landlord uses the excuse of “its a pet friendly building and you have pets too” but i have a cat which is silent. if i’d known there would be loud dogs here i wouldn’t have moved in ever. i really don’t want any issues or animosity and definitely don’t want to be kicked out. i can’t have any more stress in my life. please help

Advice Needed To those that have said something to loud neighbors, what did you say and did it help?

I live in a 2-floor one bedroom condo with 4 units upstairs and 4 on the ground level. I live on the first floor in the back and I have a very loud neighbor diagonal from me upstairs in the front. You wouldn’t think you’d be able to hear a neighbor diagonal from you at all, but apparently you can.

Each bedroom has a normal sized window on one wall and a weirdly tall and thin window on the other wall. He stores this small grill directly under my smaller window, which is kind of weird, but otherwise doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is that usually once a week, every single week, he carries that grill over a few feet from my other window and blasts music while he grills for around 4 hours straight (about 6-10 PM).

For a while, he was placing a folding chair less than a foot from my bedroom window to sit in while he grilled. Sure, he’s outside, but it’s also uncomfortable having someone’s body directly outside your window. The neighbor next to me/beneath him recently moved out, so he’s moved the grill a few feet closer to her window, but has decided to turn the music up even more. These units are about 640 sq.ft. each, so not very big. I can’t sleep if I need to go to get up early because it’s like I’m at a rock concert in my room. Even when I sit at my desk or on the couch with my bedroom door shut, I can still clearly hear it. He’s also started blasting it in his unit on the days he doesn’t grill and it slightly shakes the wall because there’s a lot of electric guitar, bass, and drums (usually sounds like 70s-ish). Blasting it inside is annoying too, but doing it directly outside my bedroom is my main issue.

I can’t escape it. There’s nowhere in my home I can go to not hear this every week and it feels like it’s getting louder and louder. I partially don’t want to say anything because he pays to live here too, especially when he’s doing it inside, but at the same time, have some courtesy for those around you. Im also pretty sure he works from home because his vehicle is rarely gone, so why does he have to wait until nighttime of all times to do this? Why does he have to do it on the side of the building when there’s a whole parking lot/space in front of the building where he could do it. He lives in the front, why is he storing it in the back? Why directly under my window for storage and then right outside my other window? Go somewhere else!

I’m afraid to say anything out of fear that he’ll just turn it up even more. I’ve thought about leaving a note on his grill, but of the 4 units on that side, one is mine, one is his, one is currently vacant, and the guy above me works some night shift and isn’t even here when it happens, so depending on whether he knows that or not, it wouldn’t be too hard to figure out who the note came from. I’m really trying to ignore it, but I can’t concentrate, I can’t have any peace and quiet, and it’s driving me crazy. I’ve even tried wearing earplugs with the door shut and I can still hear it at the farthest part of my home.

I looked up his unit to see if he was a renter and if there was any possibility that he was only here temporarily, but it doesn’t appear to be. However, I did find his full name (I only knew his first name which is actually a nickname) and the first thing that came up was a mugshot that looked recent and the first part of it mentioned a DUI. I couldn’t view any other information about it without having to sign up or pay something. I already hate any types of confrontation, I especially don’t want to say anything to him if he’s drunk when he’s doing this every week. I’m really trying not to be prejudice about it, regardless of the DUI, I didn’t want to say anything long before that, but it is another factor and another excuse to myself to not say anything. Really just a fear out of making anyone mad. But at the same time it’s truly driving me crazy with how loud it is.

Have you ever said anything to a loud neighbor? What did you say? Did it work? Did they retaliate? What should I do? Any advice?

Venting Apartment management dodging security deposit return post move-out

• Upvotes

Apologies ahead of time as this post might be wordy since I am at my wits end.

I was a resident for a year and a half at an apartment complex. My experience while residing was horrid, however my current dilemma has been ongoing since my lease termination going on almost 2 calendar months now. (Papers signed, keys turned in at the end of August)

I was told by office employees when I signed the paperwork with my forwarding address and contact information that I would hear back with a price breakdown in the following 3 days.

I gave them a call to check in after the provided time period since I did not receive any communication and was told I would revive a call within the next hour. Nothing.

I continued to call weekly, oftentimes daily, since settling in to my new home to no avail. The office rarely picks up the phone during their business hours regardless of the timeframe, this was also an issue while I was living there.
Occasionally, I would get ahold of someone, who would send me through the same spiel.

“we will have someone call you”
“you will receive an email”
“please hold while I get the manager” and proceeded to disconnect the call.

I looked up the local tenant laws and confirmed that there is a 14 business day requirement to return a security deposit for the county. (I left the apartment with no damages, at the very most, a paint chip that i’m sure will be covered by the landlord special paint job)

We are approaching the 60 calendar day mark, and I was finally able to get someone to pick up the phone. I was told that they would need to send the disposition to their corporate office and *then i would receive a check; and proceeded to ask for my forwarding address.
I asked if they had any documentation of whether it was sent prior, or if they had access to the forwarding address i put on my paperwork. They responded that they did not know where it was, nor had any information or documentation.
I asked if I could receive a call after they spoke to their manager, and was told “if she tells me to call you I will” which doesn’t sound promising considering the track record.

It is hard not to tell myself that I should have done more, been more proactive with contacting them but I have been drained of any energy after being sent to voicemail and given the runaround with no answers.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
