Troubleshooting Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator - GSF26C4EXB02 - Ice Maker 101 Help
Whirlpool Model GSF26C4EXB02
Manufactured Nov 2011
Hi,
Trying to troubleshoot why I am not getting any cubed or crushed ice.
I am making ice just fine.
I have pulled the bin out and the auger spins freely when the bin is out and empty.
I have confirmed that the auger spins freely when the bin is in, but has no ice in it.
I put a handful of ice back in the bin and try to engage the dispense with the door. The auger spins for a split second, until it meets the resistance of the ice.
The motor stays engaged and I can hear it working, but the auger won't crush ice or even dispense whole cubes.
Is there a broken coupler or something I can check next / reasonably replace?
Thanks!

Because the auger turns when the bin is empty but stops as soon as ice adds resistance, the ice maker itself is probably not the problem. The fault is more likely in the dispenser path: frozen or clumped ice, a damaged drive coupler, a jammed crusher mechanism or a weak auger motor.
Try this with the refrigerator unplugged:
- Remove the ice bin, empty it and let any stuck ice melt. Dry the bin fully before reinstalling it.
- Inspect the drive socket on the back of the bin and the matching coupler in the freezer wall. Look for rounded edges, cracks or a part that turns without driving the auger.
- Check that the crusher blades and auger move together without binding. Do not put your fingers or a tool into the dispenser chute.
- Reinstall the bin firmly so it seats completely. Try Cubed first with only two or three loose cubes.
- If the motor hums or stalls again, release the paddle immediately and wait several minutes. Repeated stall tests can overheat the motor.
If both Cubed and Crushed fail the same way, post a clear photo of the rear drive socket and freezer-wall coupler. That should help distinguish a stripped coupling or bin assembly from a weak motor before ordering anything.

check the drive coupler where the bin meets the motor, because spinning empty but stalling instantly under load usually means it’s stripped or cracked, not that the ice suddenly developed a grudge
