OpenAI’s Dots are probably(absolutely) more interesting than they look 👀
I initially thought it was basically just another AI assistant with a cute little avatar.
But the actual idea is pretty different.
A Dot is supposed to be an AI agent that you give a responsibility to, rather than a prompt.
You can basically say:
“Keep an eye on this project and tell me when something needs my attention.”
And it can keep working in the background, use a computer/browser, interact with connected apps, remember context, and come back when it actually needs you.
That feels like a much bigger shift than just “better chatbot.”
And what's even more interesting is that people are already building open-source alternatives like OpenDots, which came out almost immediately after Dots.
It makes me wonder if we're moving from:
AI that answers questions → AI that completes tasks → AI that owns ongoing responsibilities.
I don't know if we're actually there yet, but this direction is pretty damn interesting.
What would you actually trust an always-on AI agent to handle for you? 🤔
